Koh Lanta neighborhoods: pick your beach base

Koh Lanta's west coast divides into distinct bases, and the differences show up fast. Klong Dao, just north of Ban Saladan, is the most built-up, with resorts, restaurants and bars behind the sand and water described as swimmable at both high and low tide. The trade-off is clear: skip it if you want an empty beach.

Klong Nin, on the southern west coast past the mid-island rock, is quieter and about 40 minutes from Saladan. A long, clean beach sits in front of a real village, the water has proper swimming depth, and evenings stay calm; bar-hopping is not the draw here.

At the far southern tip, Kantiang Bay is sealed off by hills and forest, with resorts supplying most meals. Saladan is a 45-minute drive, so errands become deliberate trips. Couples and families wanting seclusion fit best.

Saladan itself is the ferry pier and business district, not a beach. It works for a first or last night or errands on foot, but book a west-coast beach if sand is the point, and ask for a room away from the main road.

Which Koh Lanta base fits your trip

First-timers and families tend to land on Klong Dao for the swimmable tide range and the spread of resorts and restaurants right behind the beach. Couples and families who want a long, clean beach with a village behind it and calm evenings should look at Klong Nin, bearing in mind the 40-minute run to Saladan.

If your priority is seclusion, Kantiang Bay's sealed-off setting at the southern tip delivers it, at the cost of a 45-minute drive for errands. For a first or last night, or a stay built around errands on foot, Saladan's pier district is the practical choice: just ask for a room away from the main road.
