Haad Rin, Koh Phangan: A Neighborhood Guide to Both Beaches

Haad Rin is a peninsular beach town on the southern tip of Koh Phangan in Surat Thani Province, built around two beaches that face each other across a rocky headland. If you want a walkable base with a beach on each side and the island's most famous nightlife, it works well; if you came for quiet Thai village life, it will probably disappoint. This guide covers the peninsula's layout, its two beaches, where to stay and eat within Haad Rin, and how to reach it.

The area sits on the Gulf of Thailand coast, and its reputation rests almost entirely on the monthly Full Moon Party held on Sunrise Beach. Outside those nights, Haad Rin is a compact resort village of lanes, bars, restaurants and beachfront hotels. To see how it fits with the rest of the island, start with the broader Koh Phangan area guides before committing to a base.

What Haad Rin is: a two-beach peninsula

Haad Rin occupies the very southern end of Koh Phangan. Two main beaches, Sunrise Beach and Sunset Beach, are separated by a rocky headland, and the village fills the narrow neck of land between them. That geography makes the place easy to grasp on foot: you can cross from one beach to the other in a short walk through the central lanes.

The two beaches behave very differently. Sunrise Beach, or Haad Rin Nok, is the long eastern stretch known for the Full Moon Party; Sunset Beach, or Haad Rin Nai, is the smaller western side facing the pier. Choose your accommodation by which of these you want outside your door, because the headland walk between them is short but not instant.

Sunrise Beach (Haad Rin Nok) vs Sunset Beach (Haad Rin Nai)

Haad Rin Nok runs for more than a kilometer along the east side, with clear water and a broad strip of sand that makes it the better daytime swimming beach of the two. It was among the first Koh Phangan beaches discovered by travelers in the 1980s and remains the busiest. By day it draws sunbathers, swimmers and beach-volleyball players; during full moon periods it transforms into a crowded party strip that runs until sunrise.

Haad Rin Nai, on the west, is quieter and known for sunsets. The beach changes markedly with the tide: at high tide it shrinks, and swimming becomes tricky during the low-tide season from April to September because reefs are exposed. Its proximity to Haad Rin Pier also means the water can occasionally be less clear. If clear water matters more than sunsets, plan your days around Nok and treat Nai as an evening spot.

Who Haad Rin suits, and who it does not

Sponsored

Haad Rin suits travelers who want a compact beach base with bars, restaurants and shops within a few minutes' walk, and who value the energy of a party town. It is strongest for people visiting around a Full Moon Party, or for anyone happy to have nightlife on the doorstep. For dedicated partygoers it is arguably the best town on Koh Phangan.

It does not suit travelers chasing quiet, traditional Thailand. The same source notes that for those seeking the real Thailand, Haad Rin can be a letdown. If your priority is a slower pace, look at Sri Thanu Koh Phangan on the west coast, where the scene is calmer and the focus is wellness rather than nightlife.

How Haad Rin is laid out: alleys, pier and walking distances

Between the two beaches is a warren of narrow alleys lined with bars, restaurants, pharmacies and simple shops selling beachwear. This is the functional heart of Haad Rin, and everything in it is walkable. The catch is the heat: the lanes can feel claustrophobic in the middle of the day, so many people retreat to a beach or a pool during the hottest hours and come back out in the late afternoon.

Haad Rin Pier sits on the western, Sunset Beach side of the village, and several hotels around the peninsula describe themselves as close to it. From the pier, the Sunrise Beach side is a short walk through the village. Beyond Haad Rin itself, Haad Yuan Beach and Haad Leela Beach are the nearest alternative beaches, and several hotels near Haad Rin Nok advertise themselves as within walking distance of both.

Getting to Haad Rin

Most travelers reach Koh Phangan by ferry from the mainland or from Koh Samui, arriving at the island's piers on the west coast. Confirm with the ferry operator which pier your ticket serves and how you will complete the final leg to Haad Rin, because a Thong Sala arrival leaves you a road transfer across the island. Thong Sala, Koh Phangan is the main port and the practical gateway if you are continuing elsewhere.

Within the peninsula, walking covers the village and both beaches. For the steep hills behind Haad Rin, a motorbike is the option several sources mention, but the hills can be quite steep and demand care. Check current ferry times and pier assignments with your operator, as schedules vary by season and company.

Where to stay: beachfront, sunset-side and hillside

Directly on Haad Rin Nok, Phangan Bayshore Resort offers rooms with direct access to the beach, an outdoor pool and an on-site restaurant, which suits travelers who want the party beach and a pool in the same place. Palita Lodge also sits on Haad Rin Beach, about a kilometer from Haad Rin Pier, and adds a pool and restaurant. Both are straightforward bases for a first visit focused on Sunrise Beach.

On the sunset side, Explorar Koh Phangan is an adults-only resort on Haad Rin Nai, which trades party-strip access for a calmer setting near the pier. Vannee Golden Sands Beachfront Resort is a four-star beachfront option in Haad Rin with an outdoor pool, fitness center and garden. Lighthouse Bungalows sits at the southern end of the peninsula, about a 20-minute walk from Haad Rin Beach, with balconies and hammocks facing the sea; it suits travelers who accept a walk in exchange for quiet.

For budget and mid-range beds close to the sand, Delight Resort is a minute's walk from Haad Rin Nok Beach and offers a pool and terrace, while Aquavana Haad Rin Resort is a short walk from both Haad Rin Nok Beach and the pier. Phanganist lists Aquavana as its own top recommendation, which is that site's opinion rather than an independent ranking. Skymoon Resort, near Haad Leela Beach, offers an outdoor pool and a free beach shuttle. Rates shift with season and party dates, so check current prices directly with each property rather than relying on any quoted figure.

Where to eat and shop in the village lanes

Eating in Haad Rin means the alleys: restaurants there cover Thai classics alongside international dishes, from mid-range sit-down places to casual spots, and many hotels run their own restaurants for guests who do not want to walk far. Shopping is beach-focused rather than boutique, with sarongs, hats, swimwear and T-shirts filling the small shops. Set your expectations accordingly: this is convenience retail for beach life, not a craft market.

Pharmacies in the lanes make Haad Rin practical for minor supplies, and the compact layout means you can eat, shop and reach either beach without transport. For a wider choice of restaurants and a local market atmosphere, look to other Koh Phangan neighborhoods a short ride away along the coast.

Haad Rin after dark, outside party nights

On ordinary nights Haad Rin still lights up with bars, pubs and clubs pumping out music through the village. It is a party-oriented strip rather than a quiet evening scene, so light sleepers should choose accommodation away from the central lanes or on the Sunset Beach side. The intensity peaks around full moon periods, when the beach itself becomes the venue.

Full Moon Party dates and any ticketing arrangements are set by the event's organizers, and they should be confirmed through official channels rather than assumed from past calendars. If your trip does not depend on the party, a normal week gives you the same beaches with far thinner crowds and easier hotel choice. Practical trade-offs: heat, water clarity and steep hills

Three things shape a stay here. The alleys trap heat at midday, the water near Haad Rin Pier can be less clear than further along the coast, and the hills behind the village are steep enough to demand caution on a motorbike. Sunset Beach also loses its swimming appeal in the April-to-September low-tide season when reefs are exposed. Plan beach time for the morning and late afternoon, and use the middle of the day for eating, shade or a pool.

The upside of the peninsula's small size is that none of these trade-offs requires transport to solve. You can walk from a shaded lunch to either beach, and you can pick your side of the headland according to the tide and the time of day. Treat Haad Rin as a compact village with two distinct beaches rather than a resort strip, and the compromises make sense.

Should you base yourself in Haad Rin?

Choose Haad Rin if you want a walkable beach town with nightlife, a pier at hand and two very different beaches on either side of a short headland crossing. Choose it for a party trip or a short, social stay rather than a quiet retreat. If calm water and slow evenings matter more, compare Sri Thanu and Chaloklum Koh Phangan before booking.

Once you have picked a side, book accommodation by beach: Haad Rin Nok for swimming and the party strip, Haad Rin Nai for sunsets and pier convenience, or the hills for distance from the noise. Then confirm your ferry pier, since arriving at Thong Sala rather than Haad Rin changes your transfer. For a broader comparison, use the Koh Phangan Neighborhoods: 5 Area Guides hub.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get to Haad Rin beach?

Most travelers arrive by ferry, either at Thong Sala Pier on the island's west coast or directly at Haad Rin Pier on the Sunset Beach side. From Haad Rin Pier, both beaches and the central lanes are a short walk. Confirm with your ferry operator which pier your service uses, since a Thong Sala arrival requires a road transfer across the island.

Can you swim at Haad Rin Nai?

Swimming at Haad Rin Nai is easiest at higher tides. In the low-tide season from April to September the beach shrinks and exposed reefs make swimming tricky, and the water near Haad Rin Pier can be less clear. Haad Rin Nok on the other side of the headland is the better daytime swimming beach.

Is Haad Rin worth visiting if I am not attending the Full Moon Party?

It can be, if you want a compact beach town where both beaches, restaurants and shops are within walking distance. Outside party nights the crowds are thinner, though the village still has an active bar scene. Travelers seeking quiet, traditional Thailand usually prefer other parts of Koh Phangan.
