Koh Samui neighborhoods: pick your base for beach or village

Koh Samui's neighborhoods divide sharply between the busy east coast and the quieter north shore. Chaweng is the island's busiest beach strip, built for people who want restaurants, bars and shops within walking distance of their room. Maenam, by contrast, offers a long, uncrowded beach backed by a working village road rather than a resort strip, so come for space and local food.

Bophut sits between the two, with Fisherman's Village running along Beach Road as a shop-house strip. Stay here to walk to dinner and the sand, but check the hotel's address, since some Bophut resorts sit far from the strip. Nathon, meanwhile, is the ferry port and old commercial center, where the fishing fleet lands each evening and stalls sell the catch across the road.

Plan on half a day for Bophut, Maenam or Nathon, and give the port a night if pier-front markets and sunsets appeal. Chaweng rewards 2–3 nights if you want everything on foot.

Each area suits a different trip: Chaweng for nightlife, Bophut for couples and families wanting a walkable base, Maenam for couples, families and long-stay visitors, and Nathon for port, market and food lovers. The choice comes down to how much you want within walking distance and how quiet you want the evenings.
