Choosing Koh Tao neighborhoods for beach or ferry days
Koh Tao's coast splits into four very different bases, and where you sleep changes how the days run. Sairee holds the island's longest beach and busiest village at once; Mae Haad is a working port with no real beach at all. Between them sits the everyday business of arriving, swimming and eating.
Timing shapes the water. At Ao Leuk on the southeast coast, the reef begins a short swim from the sand, so snorkelers and first-time divers can forget the boat — but come between 8 and 10 AM, since tour groups from Samui and Phangan crowd the water from midday. Allow half a day to a full beach day there.
South coast Chalok Baan Kao works differently: the bay is shallow enough to wade far out before the water reaches your waist, which suits paddling families more than swimmers. Beachfront kitchens and dive schools line the sand, and sunset is the main event of a half-day visit.
Mae Haad is for practicalities — pier, banks, shops and government offices in one compact strip. Land, sort out cash, book onward transport, then move on.
| Area | Best for | Where |

Which Koh Tao base fits your days
Pick Sairee if you want to walk to everything: dive shops, bars and night-market stalls sit right behind the sand, and active nights come with the territory, so light sleepers should book away from the bar strip. Pick Mae Haad if your priority is the ferry and errands rather than beach time. Chalok Baan Kao suits couples, families and divers who prefer calm shallow water and sunsets, while Ao Leuk rewards snorkelers and first-time divers who arrive early.
