Getting There and Getting Around

Pattaya is about two hours by road from Bangkok. Our guide to getting from Bangkok to Pattaya lists the options. Check Pattaya airport access for the nearest airports, such as Suvarnabhumi Airport. Phuket has its own airport, reported at about 45 minutes from the beach, so you skip the road leg. Once there, Pattaya is easier without a scooter. Read Getting Around Pattaya: Baht Buses, Grab, Taxis and Scooters for songthaew routes. For short hops, see the guide to Pattaya tuk-tuks. Phuket distances are larger, so expect taxis or a rented scooter.

Tip

Road legs cost time too: Pattaya's transfer from Bangkok runs a few hours, while Phuket's airport sits about 45 minutes from the beach.

Beaches and Water

Be realistic about Pattaya's main beach. It is a busy city bay, and swimming and water quality vary. Jomtien is wider and calmer, and 6 Things to Do in Jomtien: Beach, Water Sports & Rainy-Day Ideas shows how to use it. For clearer water, take the ferry to Koh Larn, about 30 minutes and ฿30 one way. Read about Koh Larn and the wider Pattaya Islands: Which to Visit and How to Get There. Phuket's west-coast beaches, such as Kata, are generally the stronger beach holiday without a boat. Judge by town beach alone and Phuket wins. Add Koh Larn and the gap narrows.

Nightlife vs. Peace

Pattaya commits to one loud strip. Walking Street runs late, and Jomtien sits about a 20-minute songthaew ride away, so loud and calm rarely overlap. Phuket offers choice instead. Patong is the nightlife base, while other beach towns are noticeably quieter. On Phuket you pick your noise level by picking your beach. In Pattaya the strip is hard to avoid if you stay nearby.

Diving and Water Activities

Phuket is the stronger base for serious diving, with access to Andaman Sea sites. Pattaya works for a first certification in warm, calm water. Verify site names, visibility and seasons with a dive operator before booking.

Things to Do Beyond the Beach

Pattaya packs variety into a small area. Try the night market for food, or the Big Buddha for a viewpoint. Muay Thai fans have gym and fight options. Cost and Time Trade-Offs

Third-party 2026 estimates, not verified by us, put backpacker budgets near $25 a day in both places. The same source lists midrange at about $65 in Pattaya against $70 in Phuket. Luxury runs roughly $180 against $250. Treat these as ranges, not quotes. The bigger cost in Phuket is often the flight. Pattaya needs a road transfer, which is cheaper and a few hours long. Time fit matters too. A 3-day trip suits Pattaya as a Bangkok add-on. A 7-day trip suits Phuket, where island and boat days eat full days.

  • Backpacker tier: about $25 a day in both (estimate)
  • Midrange: about $65 Pattaya vs $70 Phuket (estimate)
  • Luxury: about $180 Pattaya vs $250 Phuket (estimate)
  • Koh Larn ferry: ฿30 one way

Who Should Pick Which

Good to know

Koh Larn is about 30 minutes and ฿30 one way by ferry, so a 3-day Pattaya stay can fit it alongside Jomtien.

  • Pick Pattaya if you are adding a beach stop to a Bangkok trip.
  • Pick Pattaya if you want nightlife plus a calmer base in Jomtien.
  • Pick Pattaya if you prefer walking or songthaews to scooters.
  • Pick Phuket if diving is the main goal.
  • Pick Phuket if you want a standalone week with several beach towns.
  • Pick Phuket if you want a beach without a ferry.
  • Neither: consider a quieter island if you want no nightlife at all.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Do not treat the two as one beach experience. Do not book Pattaya for a calm island holiday. Do not underestimate Phuket's distances and transfer times. Do not ignore the rainy season in either place.

  • Assuming Pattaya's town beach equals Koh Larn
  • Skipping season checks before booking
  • Planning a long Phuket trip without budgeting for boats
  • Booking Walking Street hotels if you want sleep

Can You Combine Pattaya and Phuket?

Sponsored

You can combine both, but it works best as two distinct parts of a longer Thailand trip. Use Pattaya as the Bangkok-side stop. Its road transfer takes about 2 hours, which suits a short break before or after time in the capital.

Then give Phuket enough time to justify its flight and larger distances. The airport transfer to the beach is reported at about 45 minutes. A 3-day stay is usually enough for Pattaya’s nightlife, Jomtien and a Koh Larn day trip. Phuket is better with 7 days if you want several beach towns, diving or boat excursions.

Do not try to turn both into one rushed beach holiday. Pattaya’s Koh Larn ferry takes about 30 minutes and costs ฿30 one way. Phuket’s appeal is spending unhurried time at the beach town you choose.
