8 Places Where to Eat in Kata, Picked by Situation

Pick by the hour and the craving, not by a single best table. Each entry notes the zone, the listed hours and one caution. Treat hours as a starting point, since small venues change days and closing times without notice.

  • Baan Khao Soi (Kata Road): authentic northern Thai, cheap
    • Serves Khao soi, the northern Thai curry noodle soup, plus Sai ua sausage and Nam prik num. This answers the common complaint that Kata food is all tourist-style.
    • Listed hours are 11:30 am to 8:30 pm. It is closed on Sundays.
  • GoodBar Bar & Cafe (old Kata road): Isaan food and late night
    • Som tam is made to order in several regional styles, including the fermented poo pla ra version for adventurous eaters. Sticky rice and grilled meat come on the side.
    • Listed hours run 11 am to 2 am, which makes it one of the few real late-night food options in Kata.
  • Kata Night Market (behind Beyond Resort Kata, off Second Street): cheapest dinner
    • Walk the stalls, order what looks good and find a free table while it is cooked on the spot.
    • Market days and hours are not confirmed here. Check locally on the day before you plan dinner around it.
  • Ska Bar and Kata Seafood (Patak Road): old-school beach seafood
    • Ska Bar sits under a gigantic tree on the beach, with a Thai and seafood restaurant next door. Expect a touristy room with old-fashioned charm.
    • Listed hours are 8 am to 10:30 pm, so it works for lunch or an early dinner.
  • The Boathouse (Koktanode Road): beachfront terrace dinner
    • Southern Thai and Western dishes are served indoors or on a terrace facing the sea. Prices sit in the pricey tier.
    • Listed hours are 6:30 am to 12 am, so it also covers breakfast.
  • Sugar & Spice at Sugar Inn (98/70 Kata Rd): central mixed menu
    • Thai and international dishes suit groups who cannot agree. It sits on the second street, not far from the night market.
    • Listed hours are 8 am to 10 pm.
  • Chopol's Plantation Bar and Restaurant (road to Karon Viewpoint): hillside lunch
    • Reported prices are ฿100 for som tam, ฿150 for pad Thai and ฿230 for most cocktails. A glimpse of Kata Noi sits far below the palm trees.
    • Listed hours are 10 am to 8 pm, and it is closed all day Monday. Plan lunch or an early sunset drink.
  • Heaven Rooftop Restaurant (near Karon Viewpoint): sunset dinner
    • Opens at 5 pm and closes at 10 pm, so it is strictly an evening spot. Mains are mostly ฿230 to ฿350, with large portions.
    • Call ahead to confirm no wedding or private event is booked that evening.

How Kata's Dining Zones Differ

Central Kata Road and Second Street hold the night market, Sugar & Spice and Baan Khao Soi. This is the zone for cheap, fast dinners on foot. Beachfront places such as Ska Bar and The Boathouse sit on the sand side. A line of wooden shacks at the extreme south end of the beach serves Thai lunches with your feet in the sand. Kata Noi is the smaller, quieter beach just south, and its hotel restaurants, such as Mom Tri's Kitchen at Villa Royale on Kata Noi Road, take non-guests according to the source we used. Confirm that when you book. Hillside terraces such as Chopol's and Heaven are the hard part. Plan transport up, arrive before sunset, and arrange a taxi or songthaew back before dark. No fares are quoted here, so ask the venue. Kata shares its beach road and boundary with Karon. For Karon-side tables, use our Karon eating guide.

Tip

Heaven Rooftop opens at 5 pm, so it fits a sunset slot while Chopol's suits lunch on the same hillside road.

Budget Guide: Cheap, Mid and Splurge

Only a few baht figures are verified here, so tiers lean on venue price signals. Tree Bay Clubhouse, below Karon Viewpoint, lists a 250 g Australian striploin at ฿800 and truffle fries at ฿350. The Harbor Restaurant at The Shore at Katathani lists braised short ribs at ฿750. Expect to pay more for views than for food.

Good to know

Baan Khao Soi lists 8:30 pm, so its budget noodles suit an early dinner rather than a late night.

Hours Traps to Check Before You Go

Most disappointing Kata dinners come from timing. Reported hours put closing times as early as 8 pm and opening as late as 5 pm. Confirm the venue's own page or map listing the same day. Resort bars may limit non-guests, and hill roads are hard to leave after dark.

  • Closed days
    • Baan Khao Soi is closed on Sundays. Chopol's is closed on Mondays.
  • Early closers
    • Baan Khao Soi lists 8:30 pm and Chopol's lists 8 pm. Both suit lunch or an early meal.
  • Evening-only openers
    • Heaven Rooftop opens at 5 pm. DOXA Skybar at Fira Phuket, near Kata Noi, lists 4 pm to 10 pm.
  • Late-night anchor
    • GoodBar lists hours to 2 am. Confirm before heading over after midnight.
