Khao Lak's appeal spreads along the coast, from the busy dining strip behind Bang Niang Beach to the quiet curve of sand in Lam Kaen. The two feel like different trips, so deciding where to base yourself shapes what you see.

Bang Niang is the most developed beach, with soft sand shaded by palms and casuarinas and a road of restaurants right behind it. Nang Thong, the central beach, offers grey-gold sand and casuarina trees, backed by a village of restaurants and tour desks — check the warning flags before swimming, as monsoon swell can make the water dangerous.

For a quieter day, Khao Lak Beach in Lam Kaen is a short curving bay at the foot of the mountain. Come for thin crowds and quiet water, but arrange your ride back before you settle in.

The Police Boat 813 memorial in Bang Niang is free and takes under an hour; the 60-ton patrol boat was carried about 2 km inland by the 2004 tsunami. The Highway 4 entrance is easy to drive past, so watch for it. None of the beaches charge admission or keep opening hours.
