White Sand Beach, Koh Chang: A Section-by-Section Guide

White Sand Beach, known in Thai as Hat Sai Khao, is the second-longest beach on Koh Chang and the first one most arrivals see. Plan roughly 30 minutes to walk it end to end, and choose your stretch deliberately: the far north has the best sand, the central section has the loungers and restaurants, and the south turns stony. This guide breaks the beach into sections and covers access, accommodation, transport and what sits nearby.

What and where White Sand Beach is

Sponsored

White Sand Beach is one of the first beaches most arrivals reach on Koh Chang, so it draws heavy arrival and day-visitor traffic. It also sits at the top of the island's western beach chain, which continues south through Klong Prao Beach and then Kai Bae Beach, so a hotel here puts you at the northern end of the road stringing the main beaches together.

Treat the shoreline as three distinct strips rather than one uniform beach. The north is where the sand is at its best, the centre is where loungers, restaurants and foot traffic concentrate, and the southern half is the busiest for development but not for beach quality. A room at one end is roughly a 20-to-30-minute walk from activities at the other, so decide what matters most before booking.

The beach itself has no ticket gate, opening hours or booking system mentioned in any source; it is a public shoreline backed by a road, resorts and restaurants. What does change is accommodation availability and rates, which shift sharply by season. Compare room types and cancellation terms on booking sites or the hotel's own page, and confirm beach access directly with the property.

The north end: best sand, quieter footing

The far northern stretch, up toward White Sand Beach Resort, holds the nicest sand on the beach. If a wide, clean sweep is your priority, walk here even if you sleep further south. The trade-off is distance: you are at the far end from the central restaurants, so dinner becomes a walk or a short songthaew ride.

Tides shape the beach through the year. Photographs taken at low tide in late April 2011 show a very wide beach, and the same source notes that in high season, roughly November through March, very low daytime tides are much rarer. If a broad stretch of sand is the point of your trip, that source suggests April and May, when low tides more often open up much more sand.

The central stretch: loungers, restaurants and the busiest scene

The middle of White Sand Beach is the practical heart: sun-loungers, beach restaurants and the densest run of hotels and bars. If you want a cold drink, a lounger and everything within a few minutes' walk, this is the section to book. It is also the least peaceful, with constant movement of day visitors, taxis and resort guests.

Central works for a short stay when you would rather not organize transport for every meal. The cost is beach quality: the sand here is serviceable rather than spectacular, and the northern tip beats it comfortably. Think of it as convenience bought with a slightly lesser beach, which for a two- or three-night stop is often the better deal.

The south end: where the sand gives out

The southern half peters out into stones and bits of dead coral just south of Kacha Resort. That matters if you are considering Grand View Resort or the pool villas at Changburi Resort: the rooms may be good, but the steps down lead onto rough, mostly stony beach. Guests there tend to sunbathe and swim in the pool rather than the sea.

South of Grand View Resort the road climbs and the resorts sit on the clifftop. A couple, including Plaloma Resort and Top Resort, reach the sea down steep steps, but only to narrow slivers of sandy beach visible at low tide. Book a clifftop room for the view, not for easy swimming, and ask the property what its water access involves.

Walking the beach end to end

The full walk from the far southern end at Grand View up to the far north at White Sand Beach Resort takes around 30 minutes at an easy pace. That is the most useful planning number here: a hotel at one end is a realistic walk from dinner at the other, but not a two-minute stroll. The main road runs directly behind the sand, so you can step off and take a songthaew at almost any point.

Walking south to north also lets you judge the beach before committing to a longer stay in one spot. Start at the stony south, pass the central lounger zone and finish on the better northern sand, then decide which stretch you would pay to wake up on. It is a useful half-hour early in a trip rather than a fixed sightseeing stop.

Where to stay by section and budget

Beachfront rooms are dominated by hotel blocks rather than old-style bungalows. Kacha Resort has a hotel block by the beach, and nearby Apple Resort and Bamboo Resort were rebuilt from bungalow layouts into small hotels, with rooms arranged around a pool. A larger concrete property called DuTalay sits a little further south. If you want a pool and air-conditioning near the sand, this is what this stretch of the beach now offers.

Budget options exist but are limited. Sabai Beach Guesthouse is a small beach guesthouse with 10 air-conditioned double rooms, described as walk-in only, so you check availability at the door rather than booking ahead. For mid-price rooms, Alina Grande on the inland side of the main road is named as a spacious option. Treat rates as seasonal and confirm them directly.

At the upper end, several larger resorts cluster around the beach, and availability shifts sharply by season. Compare by section first: an inland room on the main road is a short walk from the sand, while a clifftop room buys a view at the cost of sea access. Check current rates and cancellation terms with the hotel or a booking platform rather than relying on a listing you saw months ago.

Getting there and getting around

Most visitors reach Koh Chang by ferry from the mainland, then continue by songthaew, taxi or a pre-booked transfer to White Sand Beach. Because the beach is one of the first major ones off the arrival road, transfers here tend to be shorter than to beaches further south. Confirm your hotel's pickup arrangement before you arrive, since not every property meets the ferry.

Once on the beach, songthaews run along the main road behind it and are the default way to move between here and the southern beaches. Scooter and car hire are widely available, but the road climbs and twists south of Grand View, so only take a scooter if you are comfortable with that. For onward planning around the island, see Koh Chang sightseeing: pick your beach and plan your stops.

Practical realities: the drain stretch and tide timing

One stretch is worth walking past: the beach access between KC Grande and Yakah Bungalows, where an open drain runs onto the sand. A past on-site report described it as full of rubbish and unpleasant, and advised heading further north for cleaner sand. That is an observation from one visit rather than a permanent condition, so look at the access point yourself before settling down.

Tide timing changes the beach more than anything else. In high season, roughly November to March, very low daytime tides are rare, so the beach tends to hold a workable width through the day. In April and May, low tides can reveal a much wider beach, though a low tide also means a longer walk out before the water is deep enough to swim. Ask your hotel about the tide pattern for your dates.

South of White Sand Beach the coast continues through Klong Prao Beach and then Kai Bae Beach, each with its own character and hotel mix. Klong Prao Beach is generally quieter and broader, while Kai Bae Beach has its own restaurant and bar cluster. If White Sand Beach feels too developed, these are the natural alternatives to price against it.

Further south, Bang Bao Pier, Koh Chang is the island's boat hub and a village worth an afternoon, and the Lonely Beach, Koh Chang area draws a backpacker crowd. Both are a songthaew ride away and work as half-day trips from a White Sand Beach base rather than reasons to move hotels.

On the mainland side, Trat is the provincial town you pass through on the way to the ferry, and Chanthaburi lies further along the coast for travelers extending the trip. Both are useful for onward planning, but neither replaces the ferry crossing as the practical link to the island. Build your stay around the boat timetable rather than the other way round.

Which stretch of White Sand Beach should you book?

Sponsored

Book the central stretch if you want restaurants, loungers and bars within a few minutes' walk and are staying only a couple of nights. Book the northern end if the beach itself is the reason for the trip and you Don't mind a 20-to-30-minute walk or a short songthaew ride for dinner. Skip the clifftop and far-southern properties if you plan to swim in the sea rather than a pool.

Whichever you choose, walk the full 30 minutes from Grand View to White Sand Beach Resort early in your stay, then judge the drain stretch, the tide and the sand for yourself. Confirm rates, beach access and transfer arrangements with your hotel before booking, and see the wider Koh Chang sightseeing guide if you are still deciding between beaches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is White Sand Beach Koh Chang worth visiting?

Yes, if you want convenience: it is the island's busiest beach, closest to the arrival road, with the densest concentration of hotels, restaurants and bars. It is not the island's most beautiful sand, and the northern end is noticeably better than the south. Treat it as a base with a good beach attached rather than a destination beach.

Which part of White Sand Beach is best for swimming?

The central and northern stretches have broad sand and easier footing, while the south turns stony just past Kacha Resort; the clifftop resorts south of Grand View reach only narrow slivers of sand at low tide. Tide matters as much as section, so ask your hotel about the tide pattern for your dates before planning around swimming.

Is White Sand Beach crowded?

The central stretch is the busiest part of the island's busiest beach, with loungers, restaurants and day visitors. The northern end is quieter and has better sand. If crowds are a concern, book north and walk south for meals rather than the other way round.
