Koh Chang neighborhoods: pick a coast for your island days

Koh Chang's west coast does the heavy lifting for most visitors, and its bases sit within a short ride of each other: Klong Prao between Chai Chet and Kai Bae, Kai Bae just south toward Lonely Beach. The east side asks more of you. Salak Phet rewards travelers with their own transport, and Bang Bao anchors the southwest tip with its stilt pier.

Half a day covers any of them. In Klong Prao the tide runs the schedule, since the water drains to ankle depth at low tide and two creeks meet the sea, so time your swim around high water and choose the north or south end with care. Kai Bae packs a long sandy beach and a single road of bars, restaurants and shops split by a small bridge, which keeps dinner within walking distance.

At Bang Bao a covered boardwalk of about 700 meters runs past souvenir shops, seafood restaurants and dive offices to a white lighthouse. Tour boats bring the crowds, so walk the pier at midday. Salak Phet is a working fishing village with a scooter-high pier and a short mangrove boardwalk, and no beach in the village itself.

Which side of the island suits your trip

Couples and families who want one base without moving should start with Kai Bae: a long sandy beach, a single road of bars and restaurants, and a calmer stretch of sand than White Sand Beach. Klong Prao, north of it, suits the same travelers on a quieter strip, provided you plan swims around high water and pick your end of the beach deliberately. Bang Bao works for couples after a quiet base and for anyone with a boat departure to catch, with the lighthouse walk as the centerpiece. Salak Phet is for travelers with their own wheels, drawn by a working fishing village and the rough track to Long Beach.
