Kai Bae, Koh Chang: A Candid Guide to the Beach and Village

Kai Bae is the middle beach on Koh Chang's west coast: a long sandy strand backed by one road lined with restaurants, bars and small shops. It suits travelers who want a walkable village with evening options but a calmer beach than White Sand Beach; it does not suit anyone looking for a party strip or a place where everything sits on the sand. This page covers the beach, the village layout, named spots for eating and drinking, where to stay, and how to reach it from the island's piers and roads.

What Kai Bae actually is

Kai Bae is a beach plus a village strip, not a town. The beach runs along the coast and the settlement sits on the parallel road, with the northern end, a central stretch and a southern end past a small bridge dividing the strip into distinct pockets. Travelers who picture a beach bar every fifty meters will find Kai Bae more spread out and more residential than that, while those who want dinner, drinks and a 7-Eleven run without a long taxi ride get exactly that.

Who Kai Bae suits, and who it does not

Sponsored

Couples and families who want one base with a real beach and a real street tend to do well here. The beach draws fewer visitors than White Sand Beach, and travelers describe it as quieter, which is the main reason people pick Kai Bae over the island's busier north. Anyone chasing late-night clubs should look toward Lonely Beach instead; anyone who wants to step out of the room directly onto sand should book a beachfront property rather than a village guesthouse.

The beach itself

The sand is fine and easy to walk on, and visitors describe the water as clear; travelers consistently describe this stretch as less crowded than White Sand Beach, which shapes the pace of a day here. Check the tide before planning a swim, and treat the beach as a public strand rather than a resort facility with lifeguards.

Behind the beach sits the village; the two are separated by the road, so crossing between them takes a moment of care rather than a stroll through a lobby. The beach is at its best in the morning and late afternoon, and the shade of the tree line at the back of the sand is where most people settle during the middle of the day.

Walking the village

Come into Kai Bae from the north and the first cluster forms around a small plaza opposite the 7-Eleven, with Margaritaville among the bars that have settled there. Further down, Catan pairs tapas with live music, Jellyfish has a following for cocktails and coffee, and Green Bar and Wine Gallery sit in the same stretch. This northern and central section is the most compact part of the village and the easiest to cover on foot in an evening.

South of the bridge the strip loosens a little, with Morgan serving sports on a decent screen and Thai and Western menus, Tom's Bar just before it, and Fin further along with happy hours, themed nights and bistro food. A row of small bar counters has grown up behind Morgan with seating at the bars or at tables outside. It is a short stretch of road, but the far southern end is a ride, not a walk, from the northern plaza.

Beach bars and evening spots

Kai Bae's evening scene is mostly bars on the inland side of the road rather than bars on the sand, though the resort beach bars exist too. The venues named on the village strip include Jellyfish, Wine Gallery, Cabana, Morgan, Fin, Catan, Margaritaville, The Chill and Sea Breeze. Treat that as a sample of what the strip holds, not a ranking; individual places change hands, close for low season, or switch their nights. Bar opening times, party nights and happy-hour windows are not published consistently, so confirm before you build an evening around one venue.

The Kai Bae viewpoint

The main viewpoint above Kai Bae is the straightforward one, a short climb from the village that gives you the sweep of the bay and the islands offshore. Travelers describe the walk as roughly 10 minutes, which makes it a reasonable sunset trip rather than a hike; check the sky before you go up, because the payoff is the view and there is nothing to do up there in cloud. At the main viewpoint you can also see the concrete base of a restaurant that was planned and never finished.

Separately, on the hillside midway between Kai Bae and Lonely Beach, there is an old National Park building that was completed and then never opened. It has deteriorated for years, parts of the roof have collapsed and the gravel access road is now overgrown, so it is not a sight to plan around and certainly not somewhere to wander inside. There are park staff bungalows nearby, but the building itself is a curiosity you see from a distance, not an attraction.

Where to stay in Kai Bae

Kai Bae's accommodation runs from beachfront resorts with pools to small guesthouses on the inland side of the road, with a cluster of four-star properties alongside older bungalow operations. The choice that matters most is which side of the road you book: beachfront means sand at the end of the path, while village-side means cheaper rooms and a two-minute walk to the bars. Kai Bae Beach Resort is one of the beachfront options travelers mention for its private beach, pool and restaurant, all within walking distance of the sand. Rooms, rates and availability vary by season, so check a few properties and confirm directly rather than relying on an old review.

Where to eat in Kai Bae

Sponsored

Eating in Kai Bae is mostly a village-road affair. Wine Gallery is described as far and away the best of its type on the island, with a wide array of wines and beers from around the world and a Mediterranean tapas menu alongside, while Fin does bistro-style food into the evening. The food court behind Morgan has a row of tiny bars with tables outside, which is the easy option for a group that cannot agree on one cuisine. The western and Thai menus at Morgan mean you can eat a full meal there rather than just drink.

Getting to Kai Bae and getting around

Most travelers reach Koh Chang by ferry from the mainland and then continue by songthaew or taxi along the west-coast road, with Kai Bae sitting between Klong Prao to the north and Lonely Beach to the south. From the island's piers, local songthaews run along the main road past Kai Bae. Fares and timetables change with the season and are not published in one reliable place, so ask at your accommodation or at the pier on arrival.

Inside Kai Bae, the village is a single road, so walking covers the central stretch and a scooter or songthaew handles the far ends. A scooter is not essential if you stay central and eat locally, but it makes the trip to Klong Prao or Lonely Beach much easier; rent only if you are comfortable on island roads and have the right license. Expect to pay songthaew drivers per ride rather than per day.

What is within walking distance

From the central village, the beach, the 7-Eleven plaza and most of the named bars and restaurants are walkable in a few minutes. The Kai Bae viewpoint is the one real walk, described by travelers as roughly 10 minutes up. Klong Prao and Lonely Beach are separate neighborhoods along the same coast road, close enough for a short ride but not a comfortable walk in the heat; if you want to base yourself between beaches, look at Klong Prao, and if you want the island's boat pier at Bang Bao, that is a ride further south.

Check current details before you go

Two things are worth confirming rather than assuming. First, bars and restaurants on the strip open and close with the season and change hands, so check a venue's current nights before you commit an evening to it. Second, the hillside National Park building between Kai Bae and Lonely Beach is derelict with a collapsed roof and an overgrown approach, so treat it as off-limits rather than a viewpoint to explore.

Should you base yourself in Kai Bae?

Kai Bae works if you want one beach, one street and a quiet evening without giving up dinner options. It is less crowded than White Sand Beach and calmer than Lonely Beach, but it is not a resort bubble: you cross a road to reach the sand and you ride to reach the far ends of the strip. Book beachfront if the sand matters, village-side if the price does, and plan your evenings around the central stretch rather than the southern end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a scooter in Kai Bae?

No, if you stay in the central village and eat locally, because the beach, the shops and most of the bars sit within a few minutes on foot. A scooter helps if you want to reach Klong Prao, Lonely Beach or Bang Bao without waiting for a songthaew, so rent one only if you are comfortable on island roads and hold the right license.

Is Kai Bae beach good for swimming?

Travelers describe the water as clear and the sand as fine, and the beach is generally quieter than White Sand Beach, which makes it pleasant for a relaxed swim. Tides shift through the day, so check a tide table for your dates and treat the strand as a public beach without guaranteed lifeguards.
