By train: day services and overnight sleepers

Since 19 January 2023, long-distance trains reportedly leave from Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal at Bang Sue. Some ordinary and commuter services still use Hua Lamphong. Confirm your departure station on the State Railway of Thailand site before you leave your hotel. Older guides that name Hua Lamphong for the northern express trains are out of date.
The sample timetable below comes from a third-party listing, so treat it as illustrative. Durations are calculated from those listed times. Day trains suit travelers who want to arrive with time to find a room. Night trains save a hotel night, but several reach Phitsanulok after midnight. Plan where you will sleep before you board.

Trains are often reported to run late, so leave slack if you have a connection or a tour that day. Sleeper berths on night trains are recommended about 15 days ahead. Third-class tickets need no advance booking, but they carry no assigned seat, and you may stand if the train is full. For questions inside Thailand, the SRT hotline is 1690. Book through the SRT or an authorized platform, and compare the fare with the official site.

By bus from Bangkok to Phitsanulok
Mo Chit, Bangkok's Northern Bus Terminal, is the likely departure point for northbound coaches. Confirm it with the operator, because terminals and ticket counters can change. No verified bus duration or fare was available for this guide. Ask the operator for the departure time, the drop-off point in Phitsanulok, and the seat class before you pay. A bus can suit travelers who miss the single morning train or want a departure time the rail timetable lacks. Its trade-off is that you rely on road traffic at both ends of the trip.

By plane
Phitsanulok has its own airport, covered in our Phitsanulok airport guide. Do not assume a nonstop flight exists on your date. Check the current schedule with the airlines and the Airports of Thailand site. If a flight runs, compare door-to-door time with the 4 h 28 min fastest sample train. Add the ride to the Bangkok airport, check-in, and the transfer from Phitsanulok's airport into town. A short flight can lose its advantage once those steps are counted.

By car or private transfer
Driving suits families, luggage-heavy travelers, and anyone linking Phitsanulok with Sukhothai. The route is understood to run north along the Phahonyothin corridor (AH1), but confirm it on a live map before departure. Budget for fuel, tolls and parking at your hotel. A hired car with a driver removes the parking problem. Agree the price and pickup point in writing before the day of travel.
Which option should you choose?

Match the mode to your priority rather than to the headline duration. The 07:30 Train 7 is the fastest sample service, at about 4.5 hours. If sleep matters, a night train avoids a hotel night but delivers you in the dark. Two decisions usually settle it.
If you choose the Train 9 sleeper to save a hotel night, reserve your berth about 15 days ahead.
- Short on time: the 07:30 day train, or a flight if a route exists on your dates.
- Light sleeper: take a day train and arrive at a normal hour.
- Saving a hotel night: a sleeper such as Train 9, with a room booked for the early arrival.
- Heavy luggage or a group: a private car or hired transfer.
- Combining with Sukhothai: a car gives flexibility, though trains and buses also work.
- Still deciding whether to go: read whether Phitsanulok is worth visiting.
Arriving in Phitsanulok
Check the arrival hour before anything else. Night trains reach Phitsanulok at 00:17, 01:59, 02:46 or 04:30 on the sample timetable. Message your hotel to confirm early check-in or a luggage hold. Local transport options such as tuk-tuks, songthaews, taxis and ride-hailing apps should be confirmed on arrival, because availability at night is uncertain.

Common mistakes on the Bangkok to Phitsanulok trip
Most problems come from booking too quickly and checking too little. Each of these is avoidable with a few minutes of planning.
Wrong-station mistakes are easy to dodge: the SRT hotline is 1690, so call it before you leave your hotel.
- Going to the wrong Bangkok station: confirm Krung Thep Aphiwat or Hua Lamphong for your exact train.
- Booking an arrival between 00:17 and 04:30 without a hotel plan.
- Expecting punctual arrivals: keep slack for delays.

- Underestimating the airport or station transfer on arrival.
