On this page
Last updated November 2026. Day trips from Pai split into a short valley loop and two longer runs: Route 1095 toward Mae Hong Son, and the road to Tham Lod cave near Soppong. Choose a scooter, a hired songthaew or driver, or a group tour, and give each long run a full day.

Best Day Trips From Pai at a Glance

Start by separating the valley loop from the long runs. Pai Canyon, the Land Split, Sai Ngam hot spring, the White Buddha and Yun Lai Viewpoint sit close enough to combine in a half day. Tham Lod and Mae Hong Son town need a full day each. Our timing labels below are editorial judgement, not measured drive times, so confirm journey lengths locally before you commit. For in-town options, see our Pai attractions guide. Coming from the other direction? Chiang Mai to Pai: Minivan, Bus, Car or Scooter Guide covers the reverse trip.
| Destination | Time needed | Best time of day | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pai Canyon and Land Split | Half day | Late afternoon for sunset | Short on time, confident walkers |
| Sai Ngam hot spring, White Buddha, Yun Lai Viewpoint | Half day to afternoon | Afternoon | First-timers, group-tour fans |
| Tham Lod cave near Soppong | Full day | Morning start | Cave and nature fans |
| Mae Hong Son town and Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu via Route 1095 | Full day | Early start | Confident drivers, road-trip fans |

How to Get Around: Scooter, Driver or Tour
Your choice comes down to flexibility versus effort. A scooter lets you stop where you like, but it puts curves and weather on you. A hired songthaew or driver removes the riding and suits longer runs. A group tour fixes the stops and the pickup time. One tour listing advertises a full-day format with a 10AM pickup in central Pai, plus an afternoon-only option. Check the operator's own page for current inclusions and return times. Rental terms, fuel and licence rules are in Getting Around Pai: Scooter, Bike and No-Scooter Options.

| Option | Flexibility | Suits | Constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scooter | Highest | Experienced riders, valley loop | Daylight limit, wet roads, insurance and licence rules |
| Songthaew or hired driver | High if you agree stops in advance | Long runs, nervous riders, families | Agree price and return time before leaving |
| Group tour | Low, fixed stops | Short stays, first-timers | Set pickup time, shared pace |
| Bicycle | Medium, short hops only | Nearby stops on flat ground | Heat, hills, not for long runs |
Pai Canyon, Hot Springs and the Valley Loop

Pai Canyon is open all day, and snippets on the results page point to sunset as the best time. Pair it with the Land Split for a short outing. A fuller loop adds Sai Ngam natural mineral spring, the White Buddha and Yun Lai Viewpoint with its Chinese village. Do the spring and temple in daylight, then finish at a viewpoint. Women are advised to carry a shawl or wear long trousers at the White Buddha. Our Temples in Pai: Best Wats, Views and Visiting Tips page covers dress codes.
- Stop order: Sai Ngam hot spring, White Buddha, Yun Lai Viewpoint, Pai Canyon for sunset.
- Skip the hot spring if you are tight on time. Keep Pai Canyon for the end of the day.
- Entry fees and opening hours were not confirmed for this update, so check each stop before you go.

Mae Hong Son and Tham Lod: The Long Runs
Route 1095 leads from Pai to Mae Hong Son town. The headline stop there is Wat Phra That Doi Kong Mu, a hilltop temple. Go early, because this is a full day out and back. Tham Lod cave lies near Soppong, in the other direction of travel from the valley loop. Verify guide requirements, raft or lantern costs and high-water closures locally before you set out. Our editorial view: pick Tham Lod if caves interest you, and pick Mae Hong Son if you want a road trip with a temple view at the end. Doing both in one day is not realistic.
Route 1095 needs a full day out and back, so the 10AM pickup on a full-day tour suits it.
Sample Itineraries: Half Day, Full Day, Budget Day

- Half day: leave after lunch, visit Sai Ngam hot spring, then reach Pai Canyon before sunset.
- Full day: start early with Yun Lai Viewpoint, then the White Buddha, hot spring, Land Split and Pai Canyon.
- Long run: devote the whole day to either Tham Lod or Mae Hong Son, never both.
- Budget day: walk or cycle to the nearest stops, then follow our Free Things to Do in Pai: Budget Guide (No-Cost Picks).
Costs, Hours and Booking
One itinerary snippet describes a ฿500 day covering the White Buddha, a viewpoint, a Lod Cave trip and a hot spring. Treat that as an anecdote, not a price benchmark. Entry fees, cave charges, tour prices and last return times were not confirmed for this update. Check the operator's own page or ask your guesthouse for current rates.

Road Safety, Weather and Timing Mistakes to Avoid
The common mistakes are late starts and underestimating the curves. Plan to be back before dark if you ride a scooter. Skip scooter runs on wet roads, and consider a driver instead. Rain can affect cave access and viewpoints, and haze can spoil the view. Check forecasts with the Thai Meteorological Department before a long day. Our Best Time to Visit Pai: Season-by-Season Guide page explains the seasons.
- Skip the long runs if you are not comfortable on a scooter.
- Families with young children do better with a driver than a scooter.
- Rainy-season visitors should choose the valley loop over Tham Lod.
- Short on time? Do the half-day sunset plan and nothing else.
Is Pai Worth the Extra Days?
If you are still deciding how long to stay, read whether Pai is worth visiting. The valley loop alone justifies one extra day. Add Tham Lod or Mae Hong Son only if you have a second day free.
