Last updated November 2026: getting around Phi Phi comes down to walking and boats, because Koh Phi Phi Don reportedly has no cars or motorbikes. Ferries dock at Tonsai Pier, where a 20 ฿ environmental fee is paid in cash. Costs below are reported ranges from a single source, so confirm them locally.

Walk inside the village and take a boat for everything else. Hotel staff reportedly meet ferries at Tonsai Pier with hand-pushed luggage carts. Bring cash for the 20 ฿ turnstile fee just past the pier. Mainland crossings sit outside this guide. For those, start with how to reach Phi Phi. How Phi Phi Don is laid out for movement

Tonsai Pier sits on a narrow sandbar between Tonsai Bay and Loh Dalum Bay. Most hotels, shops and bars cluster within a short walk of it. Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh have near-identical names, so check which island a booking names. Only Don has hotels. Leh is uninhabited and reached by boat.

  • Tonsai Pier and village: the arrival point and the walkable core.
  • Long Beach (Hat Yao): east of Tonsai Bay, reached by footpath or longtail. Our guide to Phi Phi beaches covers the sand itself.
  • Laem Tong: the northern tip, separated from the south by steep jungle hills with no road.
  • Phi Phi Leh: about 20 minutes by boat from Tonsai, with no overnight stays.

Route table: what each trip costs and how long it takes

Every figure here is a reported range, not an official rate. A 5-minute longtail to Long Beach costs about 100 ฿ per person, while the 25-minute walk is free. A private charter to Phi Phi Leh runs roughly 1,800–2,500 ฿ for 2–4 people. Confirm each price with your hotel or captain before paying.

Walking: what is easy and what is not

Village lanes around Tonsai and Loh Dalum are short and flat. Luggage carts from your hotel save hauling bags, so ask about them when booking. Long Beach by footpath takes about 25 minutes and is described as a daytime walk. Viewpoint 3 sits roughly 15 minutes beyond the main viewpoint and adds 20–30 ฿. Aim for 6:30–7:30 AM or around 4:30 PM to dodge midday heat. Closed shoes beat flip-flops on the stairs. Check the Thai Meteorological Department forecast before a long walk.

Tip

Morning walks at 6:30–7:30 AM line up with Loh Sama Bay, where Maya Bay boats dock, opening at 7:00 AM.

Longtail boats: shared, taxi and private charter

Sponsored

Longtails work as short-hop taxis and as private charters. A hop to Long Beach is about 100 ฿ per person. For longer trips, book a captain directly the afternoon before. Agree price, hours, stops and return time before leaving. Ask what the quote includes, such as fuel or park fees. Group tours reportedly arrive after 8:00–9:00 AM, so a direct charter gets you out earlier. Our Phi Phi longtail boat guide goes deeper.

Getting to the quiet north: community boat vs charter vs speedboat

Laem Tong has three routes. A public community boat leaves Tonsai Pier, reportedly twice a day around midday and early afternoon. Its fare is unconfirmed, so ask locally. A private longtail costs 800–1,200 ฿ and leaves when you choose. Some speedboats also stop directly at Laem Tong. Missing the community boat leaves the charter as your fallback. Plan to reach Tonsai before midday to avoid that. Lodging trade-offs are in where to stay on Phi Phi.

Visiting Phi Phi Leh and Maya Bay: boat rules that affect movement

Boats cannot enter the front of Maya Bay. They dock at Loh Sama Bay, which opens at 7:00 AM. From Laem Tong, expect 45–60 minutes to Phi Phi Leh. One source reports an August 1 to September 30 closure and a visitor cap. Neither is confirmed, so check with the national park authority before booking. Which base needs which transport?

Your base decides how much transport you need. Tonsai and Loh Dalum are walkable but noisy. One source warns that beach-club bass carries until about 2:00 AM behind Loh Dalum Bay. Our Phi Phi nightlife guide shows where that sits. First-timers on short stays should pick Tonsai or Long Beach and rely on feet plus the occasional longtail.

Good to know

Loh Dalum's beach-club bass reportedly carries until about 2:00 AM, while Long Beach sits a 5-minute longtail ride away.

  • Tonsai and Loh Dalum: walk everywhere, expect late noise.
  • Long Beach: 5-minute boat or 25-minute daytime path.
  • Laem Tong: boat-dependent, quiet, limited dining.

Mistakes to avoid

Most transport problems on Phi Phi come from planning for roads that do not exist.

  • Expecting taxis or buses on Phi Phi Don.
  • Arriving at the pier without cash for the 20 ฿ fee.
  • Missing the northern community boat and paying 800–1,200 ฿ instead.
  • Booking a group tour that reaches Phi Phi Leh after 8:00 AM.
  • Wearing flip-flops on the viewpoint climb.
  • Walking the Long Beach path after dark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Phi Phi Island have an airport?

No. One source states Phi Phi has no airport, so arrival is by boat. Check flight options into Phuket on the Airports of Thailand site.

Does Grab work in Phi Phi?

Koh Phi Phi Don reportedly has no cars, so car-hailing apps have little to offer. App coverage is unconfirmed, so ask your hotel. Longtails and walking fill the gap.

How do I get to Phi Phi Island from Krabi?

Krabi crossings are by boat only. Ferry and speedboat details sit in our Phi Phi ferry guide.
