Krabi to Phi Phi: the quick answer

No bridge or road reaches Koh Phi Phi Don, so every route from Krabi ends at Tonsai Pier by sea. Most travelers take a scheduled ferry or a speedboat. Distance is roughly 40–46 km (about 25–28.5 miles), depending on which pier you leave from. Ferry crossings are commonly quoted at about 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours. Some sources list shorter and longer ranges, so confirm the duration with your operator when you book. Our guide to the ferry operator details covers the companies in more depth.

Ferry vs speedboat vs tour boat: which to pick

Ferries carry the most passengers and are generally the cheapest option. Speedboats are faster and run with smaller groups, with around 30 people per boat quoted in one operator guide. Treat that figure as a guide, not a guarantee. Tour boats and longtails suit travelers who want stops for snorkeling rather than the quickest crossing. Operators advertise different times for similar boats, so compare the fine print rather than the headline. Check current prices with each operator, since this page does not quote fares.

Which pier to leave from

Match the pier to where you sleep, because the transfer is the step most travelers skip when planning. Ao Nang boats leave from Nopparat Thara Beach. Klong Jilad Pier near Krabi Town is described as well organized. Krabi Town Pier and Railay East also serve the route. Railay East is a short longtail hop from the Railay beaches, so allow for that extra leg. Many travel shops in Ao Nang and Railay sell tickets and give pier directions. Confirm whether your ticket includes the pier transfer, because assuming it does is a common error.

  • Staying in Ao Nang: use the Nopparat Thara departures or ask your agent about a pier transfer.
  • Staying in Railay: leave from Railay East, after a longtail hop to the beach there.
  • Staying in Krabi Town: Krabi Town Pier or Klong Jilad Pier, with transfer details from the operator.
  • Landing at Krabi Airport (KBV): book a transfer to your chosen pier, and confirm the drive time with the operator.

Door-to-door timeline

Boat time is only part of the day. Add hotel pick-up, the drive or longtail to the pier, and a check-in buffer before departure. After the 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours at sea, you still disembark at Tonsai Pier and walk to your hotel. No cars run on the island, so luggage goes by hand or porter. Our notes on walking and luggage on the island explain what to expect. Use this order as a template, then fill in times from your own tickets.

  • Hotel pick-up or your own trip to the pier, with buffer for traffic.
  • Check-in and boarding at the pier, early in high season.
  • Crossing to Phi Phi Don by ferry or speedboat.
  • Arrival at Tonsai Pier, then the walk to your hotel.

Booking, seasons and sea conditions

In low season you can often book the day before. In high season, book ahead to secure a seat. Hotel desks, local agents, online aggregators and direct operators all sell tickets. Compare them on refund terms and pier details, and expect commission on agent bookings. One aggregator route page showed no direct sailings, which may reflect a seasonal gap, so confirm service for your dates. Rough monsoon seas can cut or cancel crossings, and speedboats feel waves most. Check the Thai Meteorological Department warnings before you travel. For timing, see our guide to season-by-season planning.

Day trip or overnight?

One operator guide says one day is not enough, and that is a fair read. A scheduled boat out and back leaves limited time ashore after a crossing of up to 2 hours each way. Phi Phi is a group of 6 islands, and Phi Phi Don is the only inhabited one. A guided island tour from Krabi with snorkeling stops can suit you better than a plain transfer. If you want evenings on the island, overnight stay options are worth a look. For daytime ideas, see day trips from the island. Heading on to Phuket afterward is also possible, and the ferry from Rassada Pier takes about 2 hours, per the operator guide. See our Phuket crossing page for that leg.

Good to know

Crossings of up to 2 hours each way make pier and check-in buffers matter more when you only have one day.

Mistakes to avoid

Most problems come from assumptions made before booking. A late flight into Krabi can miss the last departure, and exact last-boat times need checking with your operator. Keep a buffer, and plan an overnight in Ao Nang or Krabi Town as a fallback. Do not assume the ticket price includes the transfer to the pier. For what to do once ashore, see what to do once ashore.

Tip

Pair a late afternoon KBV arrival with the 1 hour 45 minutes to 2 hours crossing, plus a pier transfer, before picking a boat.

  • Booking a late-day boat after an afternoon flight into KBV.
  • Going to the wrong pier because the ticket named a different one.
  • Packing heavy bags for a no-car island with only porters and walking.
  • Skipping the weather check in monsoon months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can we do a Phi Phi Island tour from Krabi?

Yes, tour operators run guided island trips from Krabi, often with snorkeling stops. Compare them with a plain ferry transfer if you want to see the smaller islands. Check the current itinerary and pier before booking.

Is Koh Phi Phi better than Krabi?

It depends on your goals. Phi Phi Don is known as a party island that draws a young backpacker crowd. If you want quieter water, Koh Lanta, Railay or Koh Lipe may suit you better.
