Last updated November 2026. The Koh Lanta islands are a group in Krabi Province on Thailand's Andaman coast, and Koh Lanta Yai is the one most visitors mean. Koh Lanta Noi is the smaller, less-touristed neighbour. This guide helps you pick a base, plan the boat trips, and avoid the usual planning mistakes, and it sits under our Koh Lanta things-to-do guide.

What Are the Koh Lanta Islands?

Koh Lanta is an archipelago, not a single island. Lanta Yai is the main inhabited island and the main tourist destination in the group. One travel reference counts 11 white-sand beaches along its coast, mostly on the west side. Length figures differ between sources, so we leave the number out here. Lanta Noi lies close by and gets far fewer visitors. Other islands in the wider area, such as Koh Rok, Koh Haa, Koh Ngai, Koh Mook and Koh Phi Phi, are day-trip or overnight destinations rather than places to live while you stay on Lanta.
- Where: Krabi Province, Andaman Sea, Thailand
- Main island for visitors: Koh Lanta Yai
- Quieter neighbour: Koh Lanta Noi
- Day-trip islands: Koh Rok, Koh Haa, Koh Ngai, Koh Mook, Koh Phi Phi

Koh Lanta Yai vs Koh Lanta Noi: Which Island Do You Want?
For nearly every first visit, Lanta Yai is the answer. It has the beaches, the old town and the tourist infrastructure. Lanta Noi is the option if you want a low-key stop with little tourism. Confirm current facts on Lanta Noi locally before you plan around it, because visitor information is thin. If you are still deciding whether the trip suits you, read our take on whether Koh Lanta is worth visiting.

| Koh Lanta Yai | Koh Lanta Noi | |
|---|---|---|
| Character | Main tourist island with west-coast beaches | Smaller and less touristed |
| Visitor services | Beach resorts, restaurants, old town | Limited; verify before booking |
| Best for | First-time visitors, couples, families | Travelers wanting a quiet side trip |
| Getting there | Ferry or road routes from Krabi | Check locally |
Where to Base Yourself on Koh Lanta Yai

Pick your base by the vibe you want and how far you will be from food and services. Klong Dao is the livelier end of the beach string. The southern bays are quieter. The old town sits on its own and suits people who want local streets over resort strips. Our guides to Koh Lanta's beaches and the old town go deeper. Check the distance from a beach to shops and restaurants before you book. Local transport options are covered in our guide to getting around the island.
Across the 11 white-sand beaches, most sit on the west side while the southern bays stay quieter, so weigh mood against distance to services.
| Area | Vibe | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| North beaches (Klong Dao) | Lively | Close to food and services | Busier | First-timers, families |
| Southern bays | Quiet | Calm, spacious | Fewer services nearby | Couples, remote workers |
| Old town | Local, low-key | Everyday Thai streets | Not a beach base | Culture-focused stays |

How to Get to the Koh Lanta Islands
Most routes run through Krabi Province. Fly into Krabi via Airports of Thailand's Krabi Airport and continue by road and ferry. Our main getting-there guide compares the options. For the Krabi leg, see Krabi to Koh Lanta: Van, Bus, Taxi and Ferry Options Compared. Details on boat crossings are in our ferry guide. Coming from the capital, read Bangkok to Koh Lanta: Fastest & Cheapest Ways (2026). Fares and schedules change by season, so confirm them with the operator and do not assume a fixed transfer time. For flights, see our Koh Lanta airport page.

Island-Hopping and Day Trips from Lanta
Most boat trips leave from Saladan pier or nearby. Each of the five islands below suits a different kind of day. Tour packages, prices and park fees change, so book with a licensed operator and check current rules for marine park islands. Weigh a Phi Phi day against staying put in our Phi Phi vs Koh Lanta comparison.

- Koh Rok: a marine park island, known for snorkeling
- Koh Haa: a small group of islands popular for snorkeling and diving
- Koh Ngai: a beach island, for a relaxed day on the sand
- Koh Mook: home to Emerald Cave, reached by boat
- Koh Phi Phi: the busiest day-trip island, best for a full-day outing
Best Time to Visit the Islands

Season decides how much of this list is possible. In the monsoon, many boat tours and some businesses reduce or stop, and sea conditions limit island trips. Check forecasts with the Thai Meteorological Department. Our best-time guide breaks down the months. On wet days, use ideas from our rainy-day activities list.
Common Mistakes to Avoid

A few planning errors cause most of the frustration.
- Booking a base without checking how far the beach is from food and services
- Assuming boats run year-round, when green-season trips can be cancelled
- Underestimating the transfer time from the mainland to your resort
- Treating Phi Phi as a quick stop when it needs a full day
- Who should skip: travelers wanting big nightlife or a single-day Phi Phi style itinerary may prefer Krabi over Lanta
