Getting Around Koh Lanta: Scooters, Songthaews & Costs
How to get around Koh Lanta: scooter vs songthaew vs private driver, costs, and which beach to base yourself at if you don't ride.
On this page
Last updated November 2026: getting around Koh Lanta mostly means renting a scooter or paying per-person songthaew rides. Island measurements are about 25 km (15.5 miles) north to south and 6 km (3.7 miles) across. Start with our Koh Lanta overview for what to see, then use this page to pick a ride.

Quick answer: how most people get around Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta has no regular public bus network that visitors rely on. Scooters give the most freedom. Songthaews and tuk-tuks charge per person, so small groups pay more per head. Hotels and restaurants will usually call a driver if you ask.
| Option | Best for | Main downside | Cost signal |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rented scooter | Confident riders covering the whole island | Hills south of Klong Nin, rain, licence and insurance checks | Verify locally |
| Songthaew or tuk-tuk | Non-riders and nervous riders | Per-person pricing and haggling | 200 baht per person, Klong Nin to pier (2019 example) |
| Hotel-arranged driver | Families and pier transfers | Less flexible timing | Ask for a quote first |
| Bicycle | Short hops near your beach | Heat, distance and hills | Verify locally |
| Walking | Beachfront strips with restaurants | No walkable link between beaches | Free |

Island layout in 60 seconds
Beaches sit on the west coast only. The east coast is forested, with mangroves and no sandy beaches. From north to south, the order is below. The main road runs down the west side and veers toward Old Town just before Klong Nin. Distances between most stops are not sourced here, so check a map before you commit to a long day. See our guides to Koh Lanta Beaches: Best Beach for Your Trip (North to South) and Old Town for what each stop offers.

- Saladan: the northern town and main transport hub, where most boats dock.
- Klong Dao: about 2 km (1.2 miles) from Saladan.
- Phra Ae, also called Long Beach.
- Klong Khong, then Klong Nin.
- Southern beaches: Bamboo Beach, Kantiang Bay, Klong Jark, Klong Tob and Nui.
- Mu Ko Lanta National Park at the southern tip.
- Old Town on the east coast.
Renting a scooter
Scooters suit confident riders who want to reach Old Town, the southern beaches and the national park in one trip. Skip one if you are nervous, travelling with small children or unlicensed. Past Klong Nin, the road turns hilly and winding, so ride slowly. Park entry costs 200 baht per person, plus 20 baht for scooter parking. Check Thai licence, insurance and helmet rules with an official source before renting. Ask what deposit the shop holds and photograph every scratch at pickup. Wet roads raise the risk, so read rainy-day plans for Koh Lanta and check forecasts with the Thai Meteorological Department.
Songthaews, tuk-tuks and taxis without a scooter
These vehicles are the workable answer for non-riders. Drivers often charge per person, which is why groups get caught out. One 2019 report, inflation-adjusted by its author, quoted 200 baht per person from Klong Nin to the pier. A pair paid 400 baht, when 150–200 baht in total would have been fair for that distance. Treat that as a negotiation example, not a tariff. Ask your guesthouse or any restaurant to call a driver. Save the number for the trip home. Settle the fare before you climb in. Book your evening return before you leave for dinner.
Private drivers, hotel transfers and tours
A driver for the day beats separate rides when you plan three or more stops, such as Old Town, a southern beach and the park. Ask your accommodation for a quote and a pickup time. Boat tours are usually arranged through hotels or local operators.
Pier to your beach: arrival logistics
Saladan is the arrival hub, and taxis wait at the pier. Settle the fare before you get in. For crossings, read our Koh Lanta ferry guide. Our island arrival guide covers routes. Arriving from the mainland is explained in Krabi to Koh Lanta: Van, Bus, Taxi and Ferry Options Compared. Flight details are in our airport guide, and the Airports of Thailand site lists Krabi Airport information.
Getting around by trip type
Match the plan to the day. Old Town on the east coast makes a half-day outing, and a short trip to the temple complex fits nearby. For Mu Ko Lanta National Park, budget for 200 baht entry per person. The nature trail runs almost 2 km and starts behind the parking area. For islands, a longtail from Old Town to Koh Por takes about 15 minutes and costs around 100 baht per person. Our Koh Lanta islands guide covers other boat trips.
- Beach hopping: use a scooter, or hire a driver for the afternoon.
- Old Town: day trip by scooter, songthaew or private driver.
- National park and south: hilly road, so scooter riders should go slowly.
- Evenings: pre-book a return from the Koh Lanta Night Market: Schedule, Locations & Food.
- Sunset spots: check where to watch sunset and plan how you get home.
Which base beach fits your transport plan
If you do not ride, pick a beach where dinner is a short walk. Use the table as a starting point, then check your hotel's exact location.
Taxis wait at the Saladan pier, and Klong Dao sits about 2 km (1.2 miles) from Saladan, so agree the fare first even on a short hop.
| Beach | Walkability | Transport dependence |
|---|---|---|
| Klong Dao | Restaurants and amenities nearby; about 2 km from Saladan | Low |
| Phra Ae (Long Beach) | Restaurants and bars along the sand; stroller-friendly sidewalks on the main road | Low to moderate |
| Klong Khong | Beach bars; rocky shoreline limits swimming | Moderate |
| Klong Nin | Bars and restaurants on the beach | Moderate |
| Bamboo Beach and southern bays | Few tourists and small beach bars | High for everything else |
Costs and budget scenarios
Reliable local prices are thin, so use ranges and confirm on arrival. Scooter rental rates are not sourced here, so verify locally. For rides, the only figure in our evidence is the dated 2019 example above.
| Plan | What drives the cost | Sourced signal |
|---|---|---|
| Scooter week | Rental, fuel, deposit, parking | 20 baht park parking; 200 baht park entry per person; rental verify locally |
| Rides-only week | Each trip priced per person | 200 baht per person, Klong Nin to pier (2019 example) |
| Mixed plan | Scooter for one or two days, rides otherwise | Verify locally |
Mistakes to avoid
Most problems come from skipping a quick check. Fix these before you arrive.
- Not agreeing the fare before getting in.
- Renting a scooter without checking licence and insurance rules.
- Underestimating distances, since the island is about 25 km (15.5 miles) long.
- Skipping the evening return plan.
- Ignoring rain, which affects both roads and boats. See when to visit Koh Lanta.
Verify before you go
Prices and operators change by season. Confirm rental terms, fares and boat schedules locally, and ask your accommodation which drivers they trust.
Prices and operators change by season, so confirm the longtail to Koh Por, which takes about 15 minutes, before you plan around it.
