Last updated November 2026: getting around Koh Lipe is mostly a matter of walking, with longtail boats covering what the footpaths do not. The island measures roughly 2.5 km by 2 km, so you can skip car and scooter plans. Use this guide to pick a mode, agree boat terms and pack the right cash.

Quick answer: getting around Koh Lipe

Walk. Koh Lipe is roughly 2.5 km by 2 km, and crossing it end to end takes under 1 hour. Longtail boats handle other beaches and nearby islands, while tuk-tuks and motorbike taxis are few. Arrival logistics live in our guide to arriving on the island, so this page covers only movement once you are there.

Use this table to match a mode to your plan. Costs below come from single traveller reports, so treat them as price anchors and confirm locally.

Walking: the default way

Plan on walking for nearly everything. Walking Street links Sunrise Beach and Pattaya Beach, and the pier sits on Pattaya Beach. Two 7-Elevens line the street, so it is the easy stop for water and snacks. Beach choice changes your daily distances, so compare areas in our guide to choosing a beach to stay. After dark, Walking Street fills with people and light. Paths away from it may be unlit, so carry a phone torch and ask your accommodation for the safest route back. For evening eating, see our guide to the island's night market.

Longtail boats: beaches and nearby islands

Longtail boats are mostly parked on Sunrise Beach, and many accommodations can arrange hire. One traveller reported ฿400 return for two people to Koh Adang, a trip of about 20 minutes. That is a single anecdote, not a rate, so ask for a quote. Koh Adang lies within Tarutao Marine National Park. Check entry fees and boat rules with the national parks authority before you go. A viewpoint hike there takes about 1 hour each way, so allow time. Snorkel spots reachable from Sunrise Beach include Marcilla (off the beach), Koh Kla and Koh Usen. Our guide to nearby islands covers them in more detail. A group snorkelling tour was quoted at around ฿700 per person for 6 hours, with up to 10 people. Verify that price before booking, and confirm where the meeting point is. For west and south beaches, see the beach guide.

  • Agree the total price and the currency.
  • Confirm every stop and how long the boat waits.
  • Fix the return pickup time and place.
  • Check that life jackets are on board.
  • Ask about tide and sea conditions that day.

Tuk-tuks, scooters and carts: what exists

Vehicles are rare. By day, occasional scooters and tuk-tuks share Walking Street with pedestrians. Motorbike taxis can help with luggage or midday heat. Evidence on fares is thin, so ask your accommodation and agree a price first. Renting a scooter makes little sense on an island of roughly 2.5 km by 2 km.

Luggage and arrival-day friction

The pier is on Pattaya Beach, so bags travel from there to your bed. Short walks suit light packs. With a large suitcase, ask your accommodation whether it offers a vehicle or boat transfer, and confirm before you arrive. Timing and routes to the pier are covered in our ferry options page.

Tip

Heavy bags turn the under 1 hour walk into a harder trip, so ask about a transfer before you arrive.

Kayaks and SUP for self-powered island hopping

Kayak and SUP rentals cluster along Sunrise Beach. One report put a double kayak at ฿150 per hour. Paddlers have reached Koh Kla and Koh Usen in a couple of hours, with swim breaks. Skip this on rough days, and ask staff about currents first.

Good to know

Reaching Koh Adang by longtail takes about 20 minutes, while paddlers have reached Koh Kla and Koh Usen in a couple of hours.

Money, weather and common mistakes

ATMs exist on the island, but fees and limits change, so check with your bank. Carry cash for boat hire and small shops. Rough seas can disrupt boats, so do not assume daily departures in the rainy season. Check forecasts with the Thai Meteorological Department. Our guide to season-by-season weather explains timing. For your next step, browse more things to do.

  • Booking a scooter you do not need.
  • Arriving at the beach with no cash for the boat.
  • Walking back on an unlit path in the rain.
  • Skipping the price and stops conversation before departure.
