Last updated November 2026: how to get to Koh Lipe starts with one fact, because the island has no airport. Most visitors take a boat from Pak Bara Pier in Satun province, or the seasonal ferry from Langkawi in Malaysia. Boats are seasonal and weather-dependent, so build a buffer night into every itinerary.

Quick answer: how to get to Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe sits inside Tarutao National Marine Park, and boats are the only way on. The usual chain from Bangkok is a flight to Hat Yai, a van to Pak Bara Pier, then a boat of approx. 1.5 hours. From Malaysia, the Langkawi ferry takes approx. 2 hours. Every figure on this page is approximate, so confirm schedules with your operator before booking. For the airport question in detail, read about the nearest airports.

  • From Bangkok: fly to Hat Yai, van to Pak Bara, boat to Koh Lipe.
  • From Bangkok on a budget: overnight bus to Langu in Satun, short hop to Pak Bara, boat.
  • From Krabi: minivan to Pak Bara and boat, or a long direct ferry from Klong Jilad Pier.
  • From Langkawi: seasonal ferry, approx. 2 hours.

Compare the routes by chained leg times rather than a single headline number. Waiting time between legs is not included, so add a buffer. All figures are approx.; verify before you book.

From Bangkok to Koh Lipe

The fly-and-transfer route starts with a flight from Don Mueang or Suvarnabhumi to Hat Yai, approx. 1.5 hours. Book an early flight that lands before about 9:00. A late landing risks missing the last boat, and no current last-boat time is confirmed here. Check Airports of Thailand for Hat Yai for airport details. The overnight bus is slower. It leaves from the Southern Bus Terminal and takes approx. 13–14 hours to Langu in Satun. A motorbike taxi or songthaew then covers about 10 km to Pak Bara. For a full breakdown, see our Bangkok to Koh Lipe guide.

From Krabi to Koh Lipe

Two options exist from Krabi. A minivan to Pak Bara takes approx. 5 hours, followed by the boat. The direct ferry from Klong Jilad Pier takes approx. 7 hours. Water on the long crossing is known to be rough. Anyone prone to seasickness should pick the van and boat combination, since the Pak Bara crossing is shorter. For Phuket or Trang starts, check current options with a local operator, because this page has no verified schedules for them.

  • Choose minivan plus boat for a shorter sea leg.
  • Choose the direct ferry only if you tolerate rough water.
  • Book a night at Pak Bara if you leave Krabi late.

From Langkawi to Koh Lipe

The ferry from Langkawi takes approx. 2 hours. Reports say it runs only in high season, from mid-October to June, so verify the operator and dates for your travel week. Departure and arrival times can change with weather. On arrival, the ferry operator typically collects passports and passes them to the immigration office at Pattaya Beach. Confirm the current procedure before you travel. Malaysia and Thailand combinations suit this route well.

Pak Bara to Koh Lipe: the boat leg

Most travelers cross by speedboat from Pak Bara Pier in approx. 1.5 hours. A past traveler report listed departures at 11:30 and 13:30, with an extra morning boat in high season. Treat those times as unconfirmed, since schedules change by season. A round-trip speedboat fare was reported at approx. ฿1,000–1,200. That looks dated, so check the current price. Many operators sell a bundled van and boat package from Hat Yai. Bundles are simpler but less flexible. Our Koh Lipe ferry guide covers operators in more depth.

Arriving on Koh Lipe

Boats land at Pattaya Beach. A national park fee of ฿200 was reported by one source, but another listed free admission. Check rates and any foreigner pricing on the national park authority portal. Keep the ticket with you if you pay. From the landing, a motorbike taxi or hotel shuttle will carry your luggage. Ask your hotel about a pickup before you arrive. Once settled, most of the island is walkable. See getting around the island for the details. Choosing a base first helps, so read about where to stay.

Season, weather and timing risks

High season runs November to April, with calmer seas. May to October is monsoon season, with rain and strong waves. Boats can be cancelled in rough weather, and the Langkawi ferry reportedly runs only from mid-October to June. Check forecasts with the Thai Meteorological Department. Add a buffer night before any onward flight. Missing a cancelled boat can strand you on the island. Our best time to visit guide covers the months in more detail.

Tip

Even a flight landing before about 9:00 in Hat Yai needs a spare day, because May to October monsoon seas can cancel boats.

  • Plan a buffer night before flights out of Hat Yai.
  • Skip this trip if a same-day flight is fixed.
  • Avoid tight deadlines in monsoon season.
  • Travelers with heavy mobility needs should verify the boat landing, which may be on the beach.

Cost and time trade-offs

A speedboat round trip was reported at approx. ฿1,000–1,200, but that figure needs verifying. The fly-and-van route saves hours of travel. The overnight bus of approx. 13–14 hours saves a flight fare in exchange for time. Bundled packages cut coordination, while separate legs may cost less but need more planning. If you doubt the effort, read whether Koh Lipe is worth visiting. Once there, plan your days with our 10 Best Things To Do in Koh Lipe: Beaches & Trip Planner list.

Good to know

Krabi's minivan reaches Pak Bara in approx. 5 hours, while the overnight bus from Bangkok takes approx. 13–14 hours.
