Last updated November 2026: the Koh Lipe islands are a cluster in the Andaman Sea inside Tarutao National Marine Park, with Ko Adang and Ko Rawi as the two larger neighbours. We map each island by boat time, fee and traveler type so you can pick a day plan quickly. Confirm every fare and fee locally, because our figures come from published guides rather than a posted price list.

Koh Lipe islands at a glance

Lipe itself measures roughly 2.5 × 2 km, and guides say you can cross it in under an hour on foot. Around it sit Ko Adang and Ko Rawi, the two larger islands. Smaller stops include Ko Hin Ngam, Ko Kra, Ko Usen, Ko Yang and Ko Bulu. Ko Tarutao gives the park its name, but we found no source describing it as a Lipe day trip, so ask a boat operator before planning it. Spellings drift between sources: Koh or Ko, Kra or Kla, Tong or Batong. Match whatever your boat captain and map say. Our table uses rough figures from competitor guides and writes "confirm locally" wherever sources disagree.

How the islands fit inside Tarutao National Marine Park

Several guides place Lipe and Adang inside Tarutao National Marine Park, and we expect Rawi falls under the same rules. Two competitor guides list a 200 baht park fee, and one says to keep the ticket with you at all times. Payer, validity and collection point still need checking on the national parks portal. Hin Ngam carries a local legend that taking rocks brings bad luck, and a 12-rock tower is said to grant wishes. We would skip the tower and take nothing: park rules protect the shore, and the stones belong there.

Getting to Koh Lipe in brief

Lipe has no airport, so every route ends on a boat. Ferries from Pak Bara take about 2 hours, and a Krabi minivan to Pak Bara takes about 5 hours per one guide. Flying into Hat Yai leaves a 4.5 to 6 hour onward journey, so check the Airports of Thailand pages for Hat Yai details. Langkawi ferries take about 2 hours, and one guide says they run only from mid-October to June. Our full route breakdown sits in the Koh Lipe transport guide. Operators and seasons are covered on the ferry page. Coming from the capital? Read Bangkok to Koh Lipe: Best Routes Compared. Arriving by air is explained in the airport guide. Guides cluster the best weather in November to April, which you can check against the Thai Meteorological Department, and our season guide goes deeper.

How to reach the other islands: longtail, shared boat, tour, kayak

Four options cover nearly every trip. Boats leave mainly from Sunrise Beach, and one guide says some stay moored there for hire. Sea state decides everything, so keep a flexible day. Our island transport guide covers the walk to the beach.

  • Shared taxi boat: one older guide reports 100 baht per person to Adang, and another traveler reports a 400 baht return for two. Confirm locally.
  • Private longtail charter: reported at 1,500 to 2,000 baht for a full day, split among your group. Rawi was quoted at 1,500 baht and Tong/Batong at 1,800 baht.
  • Organised tour: one listing shows about 700 baht per person, 6 hours, up to 10 people and six stops. Hotel pickup is not included.
  • Kayak: rentals run about 150 to 250 baht per hour. Check currents and tides first, and save it for Kra and Usen.

Island guides: what to expect at each stop

We use one template per island: why go, access, time, cost, best for, caution. Treat every number as a lead and confirm it with your boat operator. Beach choices on Lipe itself are covered in our beach guide, and main-island activities in the Koh Lipe activities guide.

  • Ko Adang: viewpoints, a waterfall and snorkeling off the shore. Reached by longtail in 10 to 20 minutes (sources disagree). Hike to the viewpoints is about 1 hour each way. Best for hikers. Caution: bring food, since only a small shop and one resort are reported.
  • Ko Rawi: pale sand and reefs about 12.8 km out. Usually done on a day tour that runs roughly 9am to 4pm. Best for snorkelers. Caution: a long run in rough seas.
  • Ko Hin Ngam: pebble shore 2.1 km away, with a stop of 45 minutes or less. Best for travelers short on time. Caution: never pocket a rock.
  • Ko Tong / Batong: calm shallows and wild monkeys, 10.3 km out. Best for wildlife fans. Caution: do not feed the monkeys.
  • Ko Kra: about 15 minutes by kayak from Sunrise Beach. Best for first-timers wanting a short hop. Caution: check tides, since low water exposes more sand.
  • Ko Usen, Ko Yang and Ko Bulu: snorkel and dive leaning, with Usen about 15 minutes by kayak and Yang about 30 minutes away. Bulu is usually a tour stop. Best for confident swimmers on Usen and nervous ones on Yang.
  • Ko Bulon: about 1 hour by speedboat, from 510 baht in one guide. Best for a 1 to 2 night escape. Caution: longer transfer, so check the return schedule before you book.

Which Koh Lipe islands to pick by time, budget and traveler

Pick by hours first. With a half day, we would choose Hin Ngam plus Kra, because both sit within about 15 minutes to a few kilometres of the beach. With a full day, a 6-hour tour covers six stops for roughly 700 baht per person. Hikers should aim for Adang, and families with weaker swimmers may prefer Yang's sheltered bay. Overnight, Adang camping or Bulon suit people who want quiet. Compare bases on our where to stay guide.

Sample island-hopping plans

These plans assume calm seas, which guides tie to November through April. Use the rough-sea fallback whenever boats stay in.

Tip

Each kayak leg in the half-day plan runs about 15 minutes, so check tides first, since low water at Kra exposes more sand.

  • Half day: kayak to Kra in the morning, then snorkel off Usen for about 15 minutes of paddling each way.
  • One day: join a 6-hour tour with Hin Ngam and Rawi, or charter a longtail to Adang and hike the viewpoints.
  • Two to three days: day one on Adang with a camping night, day two on Rawi, day three on Kra.
  • Rough-sea fallback: stay on Lipe, snorkel near Marcilla Beach, and walk Sunrise Beach.
  • Evenings: eat at spots in our restaurant guide, or browse the night market.

Snorkel, dive and reef etiquette

Corals here are fragile, and one competitor flags coral decline. Use reef-safe sunscreen, keep fins off the bottom, and do not touch anything. Dive schools on Lipe teach open water courses, per one guide. Snorkel gear rents along Sunrise Beach and Walking Street. Keep distance from wildlife at Tong/Batong. Main-island reefs are covered in our activities guide.

Costs and money on the islands

Budget around the park fee (200 baht reported), a boat share and snorkel gear. A day tour listed near 700 baht per person is the cheapest way to see several islands. A private longtail at 1,500 to 2,000 baht works out cheaper per head with a full boat. Cash matters: one guide reports a few yellow Krungsri ATMs on Lipe, but shops prefer cash, and none are reported on the other islands. An older 2019 blog said drinks cost almost twice as much as on neighbouring islands, so carry water and food.

Mistakes to avoid

Skip these errors. Going in the wrong season is the biggest: rough seas shut boats, and some shops close from May to October. Assuming one ferry schedule is another, because services vary by operator and month. Arrive on Adang without food and you will depend on a small shop. Leaving the park ticket at your hotel risks a hassle. Last, taking rocks from Hin Ngam breaks park rules.
