Last updated November 2026: the Koh Samet islands are one main island in Rayong province plus a few small islets that day boats visit. We treat Koh Samet as your base and the islets as an optional add-on. Guides put it roughly 190 to 200 km from Bangkok, which is why weekends fill up.

Koh Samet is not an archipelago. One guide measures the main island at about 7 km long and 4 km wide at its widest point. The smaller islets lie to the east and are reached on snorkel boats. Operators name them differently, but Koh Man Nai, Koh Man Nok, Koh Kudee and Koh Talu come up repeatedly. Most of Koh Samet sits inside Khao Laem Ya – Mu Ko Samet National Park, so you pay an entry fee to reach the beaches. For activities on land, start with our Koh Samet activity roundup. Koh Larn off Pattaya and Kui Buri elephant watching are separate trips, not Koh Samet islands.

Which Part of Koh Samet Suits You

Most beaches line the east coast. One guide counts 14 beaches in total, but counts vary, so we say "more than a dozen". Our pick for a first visit is Ao Hin Khok, since it is calmer than Sai Kaew and has no jet skis, per one guide. Ao Prao on the west coast is about 5 minutes from Sai Kaew by scooter. Pick by coast, then compare beaches in our Koh Samet beach guide.

Boat Trips to the Nearby Islands: Tour or Skip?

Snorkel tours leave from the main island and loop around the eastern islets. One guide lists five tour types, from about ฿400 to ฿1,500 per person. Hours run between roughly 2.5 and 7 hours. All prices are reported figures, so confirm them at the booth before paying. Ask which islets your boat actually visits, because programs vary. We'd book a tour if you want to snorkel and skip it if you only want beach time. Weather affects sea conditions, so check the Thai Meteorological Department forecast before booking.

  • Reported inclusions: snorkel mask, fruit and water on all tours.
  • Lunch is listed only on the 9-island and 6-island trips.
  • Skip if you get seasick or arrive during rough wet-season seas.

How Many Days You Need

One guide says 2 full days cover the main sights. A day trip is possible, but we'd stay one night. A day trip leaves little time after the ferry and the park ticket. We found no verified last-ferry time, so confirm it at the pier before planning a same-day return. Our weather advice is in Koh Samet timing notes.

  • Day trip: one beach, Na Dan pier and the mermaid statue.
  • 1 night: east-coast beach plus a sunset at Ao Prao or Cape Laem Toei.
  • 2 to 3 nights: add a snorkel tour and a quiet-beach day.

Getting There and Getting Around

Guides list about 3 hours from Bangkok's Ekkamai bus terminal to the mainland pier. Boats cross from Ban Phe. One guide also names Nuanthip Pier, with ฿70 one way or ฿100 return reported. Another source reports about ฿120 return and 30 minutes. Pier prices and names differ by source, so verify them. Read the full route in how to reach Koh Samet. Ferry details are in our Koh Samet ferry guide. The Bangkok leg is covered in the Bangkok transfer guide. You land at Na Dan pier, where a bronze mermaid statue greets arrivals. On the island, shared pickup trucks reportedly charge ฿30 to ฿200. Scooters are reported at ฿300 per 24 hours or ฿100 per hour. We'd skip scooters if you have never ridden one. See getting around the island for more.

What It Costs and What to Book Ahead

Budget in components, not one number. One guide reports a ฿200 park fee, bought at a booth on the way to Sai Kaew. Its validity period was not confirmed, so check the current fee and rules with the park. Add the transfer, the ferry and island transport. Add a tour if you want one. Book rooms early for weekends, since many guests are Thai visitors from Bangkok. For food, see where to eat on Koh Samet. The Koh Samet Night Market: Where, When and What to Know is a cheaper option.

  • Bangkok to pier transfer: about 3 hours by bus.
  • Ferry: reported ฿100 to ฿120 return.
  • Park entry: reported ฿200.
  • Scooter: reported ฿300 per day.
  • Snorkel tour: reported ฿400 to ฿1,500.

Mistakes to Avoid

Sponsored

Most problems come from timing and location. One guide warns of touts around the piers. Treat that as a reason to buy tickets at official counters. Weekends fill up quickly. May to October is the wetter season, when boat schedules and rooms need checking early. For nightlife, Sai Kaew and Ao Phai are the places named. See Koh Samet after dark before choosing a room.

Good to know

Ao Prao is only 5 minutes from Sai Kaew by scooter, so a quiet west-coast room can still reach Sai Kaew's bars.

  • Do not assume the island is outside the national park.
  • Do not book a quiet west-coast room if you want bars nearby.
  • Do not buy a boat trip without confirming the islets visited.
  • Do not rely on a Full Moon party without current confirmation.

Frequently Asked Questions

How to go Koh Samet?

Take a bus or minivan to Ban Phe, which one guide puts at about 3 hours from Ekkamai. Then take a ferry to Na Dan pier. Our full route guide has the steps.

Is Koh Samet a party island?

It is livelier than quiet islands, but guides compare it unfavorably with Phuket for party scale. Nightlife centers on Sai Kaew and Ao Phai. Quiet stays are easier at Ao Prao.

Can you walk around Koh Samet?

Beaches close together on the east coast can be walked. The island is about 7 km long, so distant spots need a pickup truck or scooter. For a verdict on the whole trip, read is it worth visiting.
