Last updated November 2026. A Koh Samui songthaew is a pickup truck with two bench seats in the back, and it works either as a shared route ride or as a private hire. It suits budget travelers on the main road who carry little luggage and can negotiate in person. For every other option, see our guide to all transport options.

Quick answer: are Koh Samui songthaews worth using?

Yes, if you stay on the main road and travel light. Songthaews are the cheapest way to cover the beach strips without renting a scooter. Their weakness is predictability. Fares are agreed in person, schedules are loose, and service thins out after dark.

We could not verify a published island-wide fare table or timetable for this guide. Treat every price you hear as a negotiated number, not an official rate. Forum posts quoting a single old fare are dated and should not be your benchmark.

  • Pick a songthaew if you are on the Ring Road, carrying a daypack, and happy to settle a price on the spot.
  • Skip it if you have large suitcases, a late arrival, or a hotel up a hillside soi.
  • Skip it if you want an app price before you move.

Shared songthaew vs. private hire: what is the difference?

Forum threads often mix these two services up, and the confusion causes most fare arguments. A shared songthaew follows a rough route along the main road. Other passengers hop on and off, and you pay for your seat.

A private hire songthaew goes where you ask. You pay for the whole vehicle, and the driver sets the price by distance, time of day, and luggage. Neither service runs to a fixed national tariff.

Before boarding, ask one question: is this price per person or per vehicle? A quote that sounds cheap per head can turn expensive for a group of four.

Koh Samui songthaew fares: how to agree a price

No sourced figure is available for current songthaew fares, so this page does not print one. Drivers set the price by distance, time of day, number of passengers, and bags. Evening rides and trips to side roads usually cost more than a daytime hop along the Ring Road.

Use these steps to avoid overpaying:

  • Confirm your exact destination, naming the beach or hotel.
  • Ask whether the price is per person or for the whole truck.
  • Agree the number before you climb in, not at the end.
  • Check the going rate with your hotel front desk or a nearby shop.
  • Carry small notes so you are not stuck without change.

Songthaew from Samui Airport

Songthaews and shared vehicles may operate from the airport, but we could not confirm current hours, the pickup point, or the fare basis. Ask at the arrivals desk or your airline when you land. Our Samui airport guide covers the terminal layout and onward transport.

If you land late or carry heavy bags, pre-book a hotel transfer instead. A fixed price confirmed in advance beats a negotiation at an empty curb. A shared ride makes more sense in daylight when you can see what is waiting outside.

Main routes: the Ring Road, Chaweng, Lamai and beyond

Most shared songthaew traffic follows the Ring Road, the road that loops the island. Along it you pass Nathon, Mae Nam, Bophut, Chaweng, and Lamai. Chaweng and Lamai are the two big beach strips, and both are easy to reach by flagging a truck on the main road.

We found no verified map or timetable showing which trucks stop where. Do not assume a truck runs the full loop. Ask the driver which direction and which beach he is heading to before you board.

Big Buddha sits off the main road. Whether a shared truck serves it varies by driver, so ask or arrange a private hire for that trip. Evening service thins out, and the last shared ride of the day is not published. Confirm a way back before you leave a beach after dark.

Songthaew vs. taxi, Grab/Bolt and scooter

Pick the option that fits your luggage, group, and arrival time. We could not verify whether Grab or Bolt currently operate on Koh Samui, so check the apps before you plan around them. The table compares the options by situation.

How to ride a songthaew

Stand beside the road and wave a hand when a truck approaches. Drivers will slow if they have room. Confirm the destination through the cab window, then climb in at the back.

Once inside, sit on the side benches and keep bags on your lap. To stop, press the buzzer if the truck has one, or knock on the cab roof. Tell the driver your stop a little early, since trucks cannot always halt quickly.

Pay as agreed before boarding or on exit. Open sides mean heat and rain exposure, so keep a light rain layer in your bag. Hold the rail when the truck pulls away.

Common mistakes to avoid

Most songthaew problems come from three avoidable habits.

  • Not asking whether the price is per person or per vehicle.
  • Assuming every truck runs the whole Ring Road.
  • Arriving late with no backup plan such as a taxi number or pre-booked transfer.

Arriving on the island

Songthaew planning starts with how you reach Samui. Our guide to reaching the island compares the options. Ferry passengers can read about the ferry crossing and the Surat Thani route.

For timetables, check Lomprayah directly. Raja Ferry publishes its own schedule too. Coming from the capital? See Bangkok to Koh Samui: Fly, Train or Bus+Ferry Compared for the full journey.
