Last updated November 2026: the usual route for Surat Thani to Koh Samui is a bus-and-ferry combination that lands at Nathon Pier on the island's southwest coast. Your best option depends on where you arrive, because the railway station, the airport and the town bus station feed the piers differently. Our overview of all Samui routes covers every approach, while this page owns the Surat Thani departure side.

Surat Thani has several departure points, not one. Your arrival point decides which transfer comes first. Use the table below, then confirm current departures with the operator before you commit.

Ferry, combined ticket, taxi or flight: the trade-offs

Most travelers choose between a combined ticket, a self-arranged transfer plus ferry, or a car ferry with their own vehicle. Flying is rarely the better option on this short hop. It makes sense for a tight connection, a late arrival or mobility needs. Our Samui ferry guide covers operators and piers in more detail. For the flying option, see our Koh Samui airport page. Cost tiers below are relative, not quoted fares.

How long Surat Thani to Koh Samui really takes

Plan door to door, not just the crossing. One search snippet puts the ferry leg at roughly 1.5 to 2 hours. A third-party listing shows a Songserm service from Surat Thani Train Station pier to Nathon at 2 h 35 min, leaving 13:10. That same page also says no ferries are currently running, so treat both figures as unconfirmed. Add buffer for the transfer to the pier and for boarding. Check Raja Ferry's own site for current sailings. Lomprayah is another operator site worth checking. Arriving by rail? Look up your arrival time on the State Railway of Thailand site. Flying in? Airports of Thailand lists URT airport details. Never book a tight onward flight on the same day as the crossing.

Tip

Crossing time ends at the landing pier, and town centre sits a 10–15 minute walk beyond it.

Tickets and booking for the crossing

We found no verified baht fares or current timetable for this route, so none are quoted here. Buy from the operator or its official counter and confirm change terms before paying, especially around holidays.

Arriving on Samui: Nathon Pier to your beach

Nathon Pier sits on the southwest coast. Town centre is a 10–15 minute walk from the landing pier, and a taxi rank stands outside the port. Different operators may use different piers, and the pier you land at changes the taxi or songthaew time to Chaweng, Lamai, Bophut or Maenam. Confirm your landing pier when you book. For the budget option, read our songthaew guide, since these covered pick-up trucks can be flagged from the roadside. Our guide to getting around Samui maps the rest. Rough water is possible in monsoon season, so check operator advisories before a late sailing. Missing the last boat is a planning risk, so keep a Surat Thani hotel as a fallback.

Mistakes to avoid on the Surat Thani crossing

Most problems come from the gap between the arrival point and the pier. Avoid these.

Good to know

Even a crossing of roughly 1.5 to 2 hours needs buffer, since that figure is unconfirmed and a same-day flight leaves no room for delay.

  • Booking a sailing without checking the connecting transfer time.
  • Assuming the station and the pier are next to each other.
  • Relying on one aggregator's timetable instead of the operator's.
  • Buying at the last minute in holiday periods.
  • Leaving no buffer before an onward flight.
