Surat Thani Pier: Tapee vs Donsak Guide
Surat Thani has more than one ferry pier. Compare Tapee and Donsak, see how to reach each from the airport, train station or town, and avoid the wrong-pier mistake.

Last updated November 2026: there is no single Surat Thani pier, because island ferries use Tapee Pier near town and several piers at Donsak. Your ticket names the pier, so read it before you book any transfer. This guide compares both areas and shows how to reach each from the airport, train station or town.

Which Surat Thani pier do you need?
Two pier areas matter. Tapee Pier sits at Pak Nam Tapee, close to town. Donsak is roughly an hour from Surat Thani town or the airport, and it is the main mainland gateway for Gulf island ferries. Donsak also holds more than one pier, so "Donsak" alone is not a full answer. Use the table as a first filter, then let your ticket decide.

| Pier area | Location | Who uses it | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tapee Pier (Pak Nam Tapee) | Roughly 10-20 minutes from town; about 30 minutes from the airport | Lomprayah has an office here | Short transfer, parking, a 200 m walk to the boat | Operations can move to Donsak in bad weather or tide |
| Donsak piers | Roughly an hour from town or the airport | Raja Ferry Port and Seatran Ferry Pier appear as bus drop-offs | Most island crossings | Several piers; the right one varies by departure and island |
| Ban Don (town centre) | Surat Thani town | Check your ticket | Check your ticket | No ferry operator confirmed for this pier in our sources |
Tapee Pier (Pak Nam Tapee)

Lomprayah runs an office at Tapee Pier in Pak Nam Tapee. Its high-speed catamaran service covers Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Sources put the pier about 30 minutes from the airport and roughly 10-20 minutes from town. Those town figures conflict, so treat them as a range. Outdoor parking costs ฿100 per car per day, though the price is marked subject to change. There is a convenience store and seating while you wait. The boarding walk is about 200 m. Round-trip vouchers are printed as one-way tickets at check-in, and you collect the return ticket at the other branch. Operations can move to Donsak because of weather or tide, so check your booking message on the morning of travel.
Donsak piers

Most island crossings from this area leave from Donsak. It is roughly an hour from Surat Thani town or the airport. Operators here use more than one pier, and the pier is not always the same for every departure or island. Sample bus listings show drop-offs at Raja Ferry Port and at Seatran Ferry Pier. Both are at Donsak but they are different piers. Raja Ferry publishes its own details on its official ferry port site. Read the pier name on your ticket before you board a bus or minivan. If the ticket names no pier, ask the operator before departure day.
- Ticket names Tapee: go to Pak Nam Tapee, not Donsak.
- Ticket names Raja Ferry Port or Seatran Ferry Pier: go to that exact Donsak pier.
- Ticket names only "Donsak": confirm the pier with the seller.
- Notice of a weather or tide switch: follow the new pier and allow extra road time.

How to get to the pier from the airport, train station or town
Phantip 1970 bus listings give a snapshot of road legs. All were early-morning departures between 06:00 and 06:30. Town to the train station costs ฿120 and takes about 30 minutes. Town to the airport costs ฿120 and takes about 45 minutes. Town to Raja Ferry Port or Seatran Ferry Pier at Donsak costs ฿165 and takes about 1 h 15 min. Treat these as samples, not a fixed timetable. Taxi and private car fares are not in our sources, so ask your hotel or operator for a current quote. Arrival details are in our airport arrival notes.

| From | To | Bus (indicative) | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Town (Phantip Office) | Train station | ฿120, about 30 min | Early-morning listing |
| Town (Phantip Office) | Airport | ฿120, about 45 min | Early-morning listing |
| Town (Phantip Office) | Raja Ferry Port or Seatran Ferry Pier, Donsak | ฿165, about 1 h 15 min | Confirm which pier your ticket names |
| Airport or train station | Tapee Pier | Not in our sources | Ask operator; about 30 min from airport |
Costs and tickets

Prices and schedules change, so confirm before travel. Sample combined bus-plus-ferry listings run about ฿540-690 to Koh Samui. A sample minivan-plus-ferry listing to Koh Phangan is about ฿590, with a 5 h 30 min trip. These are indicative ranges, not quotes. Reverse routes show "from" fares of ฿330 from Samui, ฿420 from Phangan, ฿900 from Tao and ฿400 from Ao Nang to Surat Thani. Tapee parking is ฿100 per car per day. Combined tickets bundle the road and sea legs, while separate legs let you choose your own pier. Read the amend and cancel rules before you pay.
Driving to Tapee Pier adds ฿100 per car per day for parking, so compare that with the ฿120 bus fare from town.
Timing and buffers

Every crossing is a road leg plus a sea leg. The Donsak bus alone took about 1 h 15 min in the sample listing. Add check-in time and any wait between vehicles. For a same-day flight or onward train, our advice is to keep generous margin rather than book the tightest option. Arriving from the capital? Our guide to travelling from Bangkok covers the inbound leg. Sea conditions can disrupt sailings in the monsoon months, and operators publish changes on the day. Check seasonal weather patterns when picking dates. Book ahead around Thai holidays and Koh Phangan Full Moon dates, when seats fill in both directions.
Budget about 1 h 15 min for the Donsak bus alone, plus check-in. Early sample buses left between 05:30 and 06:30, so the day starts very early.
Mistakes to avoid
Most problems come from assuming rather than reading the ticket.
- Going to the nearest pier instead of the one on your ticket.
- Treating Tapee and Donsak as interchangeable; they are about an hour apart by road.
- Booking a tight connection after a late flight or train.
- Ignoring a weather or tide notice that moves the departure.
- Skipping the amend and cancel rules, which differ between operators.
- Overpacking, since combined tickets often mean carrying bags between vehicles.
Where to stay the night before an early ferry
Early buses left at 05:30-06:30 in the sample listings. Pick a bed near the train station or airport, or near a bus pickup point such as the Phantip Office. Check that your operator picks up from your area. We name no hotels here because none are verified. If you have an evening free, try the riverside night market for dinner. Our restaurant picks cover sit-down options.
Onward from the pier
Surat Thani is mainly a transit hub, so most travelers pass straight through. Our verdict on staying helps if you are undecided. If you have a spare day, see our Surat Thani overview. Khao Sok, Cheow Lan and Ratchaprapha Dam sit in our day trip options.
