Last updated November 2026: the Koh Phangan ferry network runs on a few operators, including Lomprayah, Seatran Discovery and Raja Ferry, and the right boat depends on where you start. Crossings from Koh Samui take about 30–45 minutes, while Donsak on the mainland is roughly 2.5 hours away. Decide first between speed, price and connection time, then match the pier to your beach.

Quick answer: the best ferry to Koh Phangan

Start with your origin, not the brand. Samui to Phangan is the shortest hop, at about 15 km and 30–45 minutes from Bangrak or Maenam piers. Koh Tao sits about 35 km away, and ferrysamui.com puts that crossing near 1.5 hours. From Donsak, expect about 2.5 hours. Lomprayah also lists a Chumphon service at about 3.5 hours. Our full route walkthrough covers each approach in depth, so this page focuses on which operator and boat to book.

  • From Koh Samui: 30–45 minutes from Bangrak or Maenam piers.
  • From Koh Tao: roughly 1–1.5 hours, depending on operator.
  • From Donsak: about 2.5 hours on the car-ferry and passenger services.
  • From Bangkok: a bus-plus-ferry combination ticket, around 10–11 hours.

Koh Phangan ferry routes at a glance

Fares below are booking-site "from" prices gathered during our November 2026 research. Treat them as floors, not typical fares, and do not assume they are current. Samui starts from ฿199 and Koh Tao from ฿450. Samui Airport starts from ฿400, Donsak from ฿550 and Bangkok from ฿1,150. Confirm every fare on the operator's own page before you set a budget. Our Samui to Phangan guide has the step-by-step detail. For the capital, read the Bangkok overland route.

Lomprayah appears on Chumphon, Koh Tao, Samui and Donsak listings. Seatran Discovery serves Donsak, with a 05:30 Donsak to Thong Sala listing of about 2.5 hours. Raja Ferry lists a 05:00 Donsak to Thong Sala sailing, also about 2.5 hours. Lomlahkkhirin runs the short Koh Tao and Samui hops, including a 07:05 Koh Tao departure of about 45 minutes. We do not rank these by speed or price. The only "cheapest" and "fastest" claim we found dates from 2020. First crossings start early in the morning, so confirm the season's timetable with the operator.

Piers on Koh Phangan: Thong Sala, Haad Rin and Ban Tai

Thong Sala is Koh Phangan's main pier, on the island's southwest side. Most mainland and neighboring-island services land there. Haad Rin Queen Pier handles shorter crossings at the southern tip, nearest the Full Moon beach. Ban Tai appears in listings for a roughly 30-minute Bangrak to Ban Tai crossing at 09:00, sold by Echo Travel and Petcherat Marina. One booking site says Thong Sala is close to Haad Rin Beach. Haad Rin sits at the southern tip, so verify the transfer rather than assume a short walk. Our island transport guide explains songthaews, taxis and scooters. Read your ticket for the pier name before you pay.

How to choose: speed, price, luggage and connections

Koh Phangan has no airport, so every arrival involves a sea crossing. Flyers should read our airport and arrival guide first. A typical buffer is crossing time, plus a 30-minute pier lead, plus your hotel transfer. Add slack if a flight or train follows. Early boats around 05:00 suit mainland connections. A late-morning boat is calmer for luggage and motion sickness. Baggage terms and surcharges are set by each operator, so read them on your ticket.

Tip

Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure, and add that to crossing time and your hotel transfer.

  • Flying into Samui: book a Bangrak or Maenam crossing, with a generous buffer after landing.
  • Arriving at Surat Thani by train: look at Donsak crossings from about 05:00.
  • Coming from Koh Tao: pick a morning sailing and keep the return flexible.
  • Bangkok overland: buy a through ticket and expect about 10–11 hours.
  • Full Moon dates: book early and avoid same-day connections.
  • Travelling with a vehicle: contact the operator before buying anything.

Booking and buying tickets

Sponsored

Buy online ahead of busy dates, and carry the e-ticket to the pier. Arrive at least 30 minutes before departure. Pier staff then hand you a destination sticker. Compare the operator's own site with resellers, since a reseller may add a service fee. Check four things before you pay: fees, refund and amend terms, the exact pier, and which operator runs the boat. Hold timers and sign-in pages on booking sites are just checkout mechanics. If a pier counter sells tickets, compare its price with the online fare before committing.

Full Moon Party, high season and weather

Ferries carry roughly 180–300 passengers, and Full Moon periods fill them fast. Haad Rin books out in the days around the party, so reserve boats and beds early. Dates are published on the official Full Moon Party site. Our Full Moon planning guide covers the crowd side. One aggregator describes Samui's rainy season as September to November and its dry season as December to February. Our seasonal timing guide compares months. Rough seas can delay or cancel crossings. Check the Thai Meteorological Department forecast before a tight connection.

Taking a car or motorbike

Raja Ferry is the car-carrying option from Donsak, and a forum thread points to that use. We could not verify that it still carries vehicles to Phangan, or which pier it uses. Ask the operator about vehicle fares, size limits and the Thong Sala landing before you drive to Donsak. Many visitors rent a scooter or hail a songthaew after landing instead, which avoids the vehicle decision entirely.

Common ferry mistakes to avoid

Sponsored

Most problems come from timing and the wrong pier.

  • Booking the wrong pier: Thong Sala, Haad Rin Queen and Ban Tai are far apart.
  • Tight connections: leave a buffer if a flight or train follows.
  • Trusting an old timetable: schedules change by season.
  • Last-boat risk: keep a backup crossing for your return day.
  • No return buffer: skip same-day flights after rough-weather days.

Onward hops and island-hopping

Sponsored

Phangan to Samui is the 15 km hop, and Phangan to Tao is the 35 km hop. A three-island loop chains both. Compare the islands in our Phangan versus Samui comparison. Divers should read the Koh Tao comparison. Our island-hopping overview maps the neighboring islands. Once you land, the Koh Phangan activity guide covers what to do.

Good to know

Phangan to Tao is the 35 km hop. Expect the Koh Tao crossing to take roughly 1–1.5 hours, against 30–45 minutes for the Samui hop.

Frequently Asked Questions
