Last updated November 2026: there are three routes for how to get to Koh Phangan. Fly to Koh Samui (USM) and take a boat, fly to Surat Thani (URT) or Chumphon and connect by ferry, or travel overland to Donsak. Most arrivals finish at the pier in Thong Sala, the main town, so plan for a sea leg whichever way you start.

Each route trades speed against price and connection risk. Check the operator's current timetable before you commit, because schedules shift by season and by company.

  • Via Koh Samui: best for short transfers and flexible flight options. You land at USM and finish with a boat of roughly 20–50 minutes to Thong Sala.
  • Via Surat Thani: best for budget travelers who accept more legs. A bus and ferry combination takes about 4 hours in total.
  • Overland to Donsak: best for road-trippers and anyone avoiding flights. Confirm the current ferry operator and sailing times before you set out.

Route comparison table

Use this table to match your starting point to a route. Cost tiers are relative, not quoted fares, and timings are ranges that depend on season, operator and connections.

Flying is the safest bet when you have limited days. You can fly to Samui and take a short boat, or fly to Surat Thani and connect by transfer and ferry. Trains and buses from Bangkok may not connect with the boats in time, so check the schedule on the State Railway of Thailand site before relying on rail. Our Bangkok to Koh Phangan guide covers the full comparison. Flight details for the island itself sit in our Koh Phangan airport explainer.

From Koh Samui, including day trips

Samui is the shortest hop. Ferries leave from Bangrak and Maenam piers and take roughly 30–45 minutes, while some boats from the airport side run about 20–50 minutes. Operators such as Lomprayah and Seatran Discovery publish their own timetables. Always check which pier your ticket uses before you leave your hotel. A day trip works only if the last return sailing suits your plans. Read Samui to Phangan details for the full day-trip breakdown. Our Koh Phangan ferry guide explains the boat types.

From Surat Thani: bus and boat combinations

This route suits budget travelers with spare time. A bus plus ferry combination takes about 4 hours in total. Connection risk is the catch. A delayed bus can miss the boat, and a flight landing late may leave you waiting overnight. Combined tickets bundle both legs, which helps if the first leg runs late. Check the airport's flight information through Airports of Thailand before booking a tight link.

Tip

Budget travelers on the Surat Thani bus route face about 4 hours in total, and a late landing can leave them waiting for the last boat of the day.

From Koh Tao, Krabi, Phuket and other origins

Only a few other origins have verified details, so rely on operator sites for current links. Koh Tao travelers should compare options in Koh Tao versus Koh Phangan and then check the boat operators directly. Krabi and Phuket usually mean a flight or a long transfer, then one of the routes above. We have no verified timetable for those journeys, so confirm them with the operator.

Arriving at Thong Sala: onward transport

Most arrivals land at the pier in Thong Sala. Taxis and songthaews wait nearby, and many guesthouses offer pre-booked pickups. Agree the fare or confirm the pickup before you leave the pier area. Our guide to getting around lists the options. Once you settle in, the pillar guide to things to do on the island picks up the next step.

Good to know

Boats from Bangrak and Maenam take 30–45 minutes, so arrange your Thong Sala pickup before you board, not after you land.

Timing, season and Full Moon Party warnings

Sea conditions change by season, and rough weather can cancel or delay boats. Our best time to visit guide covers the calmer months, and the Thai Meteorological Department publishes forecasts. Around the Full Moon Party, boats and rooms fill fast. Book transport early for those dates. Build a buffer for late-landing flights, because the last boat of the day will not wait.

Mistakes to avoid and what to book in advance

Sponsored

A few planning habits prevent most problems. Verify the details with the operator before you pay.

  • Book a ferry ticket in advance during Full Moon Party periods.
  • Confirm which Samui pier your ticket uses.
  • Avoid tight connections between a flight and the last boat.
  • Agree taxi fares before leaving Thong Sala pier.
  • Check whether a combined ticket covers both bus and boat.
