Your real choices are flying to Koh Samui, taking a bus or train plus a ferry via Surat Thani, or driving. Guides typically put the overland total at 10–14 hours, so confirm every timetable before you book.

Fly to Koh Samui, then take a short ferry, if you want the shortest travel day. Flights take about 1 hour and typically cost ฿3,000–6,000. Bus plus ferry via Surat Thani is the budget route. Expect roughly 8–10 hours on the bus at ฿500–900, then a 2–2.5 hour crossing at ฿300–400. Ko Pha Ngan, as some booking sites spell it, sits roughly 750 km from Bangkok. Use the table below to compare the options side by side.

  • Skip the night bus or train if you cannot sleep upright.
  • Skip flying if the second leg and airport transfers would eat the time you save.
  • Skip driving if you are alone, since fuel, tolls and the vehicle ferry add up.

Fly to Koh Samui, then ferry

Flying is the fastest option for time-pressed travelers. Bangkok has two airports, Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang, so check which one your flight uses. Flight time is about 1 hour, and fares typically run ฿3,000–6,000. Check current schedules with Airports of Thailand. Add time for the airport-to-pier transfer on Samui. Then comes a 30–60 minute crossing at ฿200–300, covered in our Samui to Phangan guide. Leave a buffer between landing and the boat, because a missed sailing can cost you half a day.

Bus or train plus ferry via Surat Thani

This is the budget route. Direct buses to Surat Thani typically take 8–10 hours and cost about ฿500–900. Trains run to the same area, and the State Railway of Thailand publishes current timetables. An overnight service saves a hotel night but suits only people who sleep upright. Daytime travel costs a day but lets you see where you are going. Watch the combined bus-and-boat ticket. If the first leg runs late, you can miss the connecting ferry and sit at the pier until the next sailing. Pack light, since you will carry your own bags between vehicles.

Driving yourself

Driving from Bangkok to Surat Thani takes about 8–10 hours, with Highway 4 the usual route. Fuel and tolls typically add up to ฿2,000–3,000. You also pay a vehicle-ferry fee on top, so confirm it with the operator. Driving makes sense for groups splitting costs or road-trippers who want a car on the island. For one traveler, it is rarely worth the effort.

Good to know

Highway 4 is the usual road, yet every route ends on a boat, so a car still needs the vehicle ferry.

Ferry crossing: what to know

Every route ends on a boat. From Surat Thani, crossings take roughly 2–2.5 hours, and some sources say up to 3 hours. From Samui, they take 30–60 minutes. Operators such as Lomprayah publish their own timetables and fares. Book ahead in busy periods and keep your passport handy. Weather can cancel sailings, so avoid booking a flight home the same day you return. If you are prone to seasickness, take medication before boarding on the longer crossing. Our Koh Phangan ferry guide covers the piers and operators in more detail. Our general getting-there guide covers routes from other starting points.

Tip

Plan for up to 3 hours on the Surat Thani crossing, not only the 2–2.5 hours quoted, because the bus leg alone runs 8–10 hours.

When to travel, and when to add a buffer

Heavy rain and rough seas can delay or cancel ferries. Guides disagree on the exact monsoon months, so check the Thai Meteorological Department before you go. Our best time to visit guide breaks down the seasons. Full Moon Party nights push up demand for boats and beds. Confirm dates on the official party site. See our Full Moon Party guide for planning. Add at least one spare day on either side of a fixed flight home.

Mistakes to avoid

Most problems come from tight connections and wrong assumptions. Fix these before you leave Bangkok. Once you land, our island transport guide explains the pier-to-hotel leg.

  • Booking a tight onward connection after a late bus or flight.
  • Arriving after the last boat and paying for a night near the pier.
  • Assuming Koh Phangan has an airport. See our airport page for the alternatives.
  • Skipping the check on current timetables and fares.
  • Carrying heavy luggage across several transfers.
