Last updated November 2026. Surat Thani temples split into a mainland group and an island group, and this guide covers both. For heritage, start with Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya. For cliff-top views, add Thamma Park. Samui visitors can reach Wat Plai Laem and Wat Phra Yai without leaving the island. Our full Surat Thani things to do guide covers the rest of the province.

Surat Thani temples worth your time: quick picks

"Surat Thani" means the city, the province and the gateway to Samui, Phangan and Tao. This guide covers the province, so it splits temples into mainland and island. Match the pick to the traveler.

  • History-minded: Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya, in the town of Chaiya.
  • Views and a climb: Thamma Park (Ban Khao Na Nai), the cliff-top temple complex.
  • Island-based and short on time: Wat Plai Laem and Wat Phra Yai on Koh Samui.
  • Meditation: Wat Suan Mokkh, the forest monastery near Chaiya, which is a retreat site rather than a sightseeing stop.
  • Mobility-limited: choose Chaiya or the Samui wats and skip Thamma Park's stairs.

Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya

Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya is the heritage pick, centered on a Srivijaya-style chedi in Chaiya. History-minded visitors should give it priority. Trip.com's live widget showed 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM opening on 5 November 2026, but treat that as unconfirmed. Check hours with the Fine Arts Department of Thailand before you go. Chaiya has its own railway station, so rail is one way to reach the temple without a car. Road access from Surat Thani city is the other option. Allow enough time to walk the grounds slowly, and confirm the length of a typical visit locally.

Thamma Park (Ban Khao Na Nai)

Thamma Park is a cluster of temples perched on narrow limestone peaks. Climbing one takes about 15 minutes at a slow pace, up steep, uneven stairs. Sources disagree on the count. One blogger counted 6 temples. Another source recorded four in October 2019 with a fifth under construction. Confirm on arrival.

  • The first 3 temples share one path. Reaching the rest means walking back down and taking a different route.
  • The entrance arch is a known sunrise spot. The approach road is unlit before dawn, so bring a light.
  • Covered clothing is required for the temples.
  • Distance is the catch: about 1 hour from Khao Sok and about 45 minutes from Cheow Lan Lake.
  • One 2024 blogger report put the ride at about 1h30 by motorbike from Surat Thani city. Treat that as an anecdote.

Temples on Koh Samui

Samui has most of the province's best-known temples, including Wat Plai Laem, Wat Phra Yai and Wat Lamai. They suit island visitors who want an easy stop between beach days. Ticketing, dress code and hours were not confirmed in our sources, so check each locally. Beach time pairs well with the temples, and our guide to Surat Thani Beaches: Where to Swim and How to Get There covers the coast. Do not plan mainland and island temples on the same day.

Wat Suan Mokkh and other options

Wat Suan Mokkh is the forest monastery founded by Buddhadasa Bhikkhu. Treat it as a meditation site, not a sightseeing stop. Visitor policy was not verified here, so contact the monastery before turning up. Wat Khunaram and Wat Sila Ngu appear in Wikipedia's category of Surat Thani temples. We have not verified their details, so confirm their location and access before adding them.

How to get around: city, Chaiya, Thamma Park and the islands

Thamma Park is the one stop where transport shapes the plan. A rented motorbike gives the most freedom, and a 2024 report quoted 300 baht a day. Verify that rate before you rely on it. Chaiya works by train, so check timetables with the State Railway of Thailand. Arriving from the capital? Our Bangkok to Surat Thani: Flight, Train, Bus Compared guide covers routes. Flying in? See Surat Thani Airport (URT): Getting to Town & Islands for onward transport. Island temples start with the ferry, covered in our Surat Thani Pier: Tapee vs Donsak Guide guide. Chaiya and Thamma Park together are likely too much for one day without a car. Our Day Trips from Surat Thani: Chaiya, Khanom, Samui and More guide has more mainland ideas.

Good to know

Chaiya works by train, so a motorbike at 300 baht a day is most useful for Thamma Park, which sits about 1 hour from Khao Sok.

Temple etiquette, dress code and costs

Sponsored

Cover shoulders and knees at every temple. Remove shoes where signs or other visitors indicate it. Defer to monks, keep photography respectful, and never pose in a way that disrespects a Buddha image. Entry is typically free or donation-based, but verify each temple. Transport is the real expense. Our sources give no confirmed entry fees, so ask locally or check the Tourism Authority of Thailand overview.

Sample plans: half-day, full-day and island add-on

Pick one anchor rather than chasing every Wat.

Tip

Plan the sunrise full day around about 15 minutes of steep climbing, plus a slow descent before the drive back.

  • Half-day mainland: Wat Phra Borommathat Chaiya alone, by train or road.
  • Full day with a vehicle: Thamma Park at sunrise, then a slow descent and a rest before the drive back.
  • Samui half-day: Wat Plai Laem and Wat Phra Yai, then the beach.
  • Retreat option: Wat Suan Mokkh only after confirming visitor policy.

Mistakes to avoid at Surat Thani temples

Midday heat on Thamma Park's stairs is the most common error, so climb early and carry water. Dry-season timing matters too, because wet steps are slippery; see our Best Time to Visit Surat Thani: Weather by Month & Season page and the Thai Meteorological Department forecast. Do not arrive before dawn without a light. Do not assume one path reaches every temple. Shorts will get you turned away. Undecided about the trip? Read Is Surat Thani Worth Visiting?
