Last updated November 2026. Surat Thani beaches are not in the city itself, because the provincial capital sits on a river and works as a transit town. Swimming beaches are on the Gulf of Thailand coast and on the islands, so this guide sorts them by distance and trip type. Start with the Surat Thani hub guide if you are still choosing a base.

Short answer: are there beaches in Surat Thani?

Not in the city. Surat Thani town is a river town where people change buses, trains and boats. Nobody comes here to lie on sand. Plan the beach as a second leg of the trip.

Two options exist for beach time. One is the mainland Gulf coast around Don Sak and Khanom. The other is the island group reached by ferry from the province, mainly Koh Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao. Our guide does not give distances or fares for either, because no sourced figures were available. Confirm them with operators before you book.

Which Surat Thani beach do you mean?

Search results for this phrase mix two different trips. Mainland beaches are reached by road. Island beaches are reached by ferry, and sometimes by a flight to the island itself.

The Gulf of Thailand is the sea on this side of the peninsula. That matters for timing, because the Gulf follows its own weather pattern. It does not follow the Andaman side that many Thailand beach guides describe. Check the Thai Meteorological Department forecasts before fixing dates.

This page links out rather than repeating island guides. Use it to choose a direction, then go deeper on the island you pick.

Group your options by how much travel they demand. Verify current conditions locally before committing, since beach quality and facilities change from season to season.

  • Mainland Gulf coast near Don Sak and Khanom: the closest option by road. It suits a quiet, low-facility stop, and you should check current swimming conditions locally first.
  • Koh Samui: the largest island and the one with the most facilities. It suits families and travelers who want restaurants and hotels beside the sand.
  • Koh Phangan: a better fit if nightlife near the beach matters. Ferry dependence is high.
  • Koh Tao: the usual choice for snorkeling and diving. It is the most ferry-dependent of the three.

The chain is city, then pier, then ferry, then beach. Mainland beaches skip the ferry step. For islands, buy a combined bus and boat ticket or arrange the pier transfer yourself.

Coming from Bangkok, our Bangkok to Surat Thani route guide covers the overland options. By air, see the Surat Thani airport page for arrival details. Rail timetables sit on the State Railway of Thailand site.

Ferry details belong to the operators. Lomprayah routes and times are listed on its own site. Raja Ferry publishes its own crossings. Confirm which mainland pier each boat leaves from. Our Surat Thani pier guide covers the local transfer.

Best time for Surat Thani beaches

Rough seas affect ferries before they affect the sand. In wet months, crossings can be delayed or cancelled, and the water can turn choppy. We do not list specific months here, because the brief supplied no sourced rainfall figures. Check the Thai Meteorological Department for the Gulf-side pattern, then read the Best Time to Visit Surat Thani: Weather by Month & Season page for local timing.

Cost and time trade-offs

Staying in town is generally cheaper than sleeping on an island. A day trip saves accommodation costs but eats time on both ends of the ferry. Flying to an island can cut travel time, but it usually costs more than a bus and boat combination.

No official fares were supplied for this guide. Compare prices on the operator sites linked above. If you want a lower-cost trip, base yourself in town and use the Day Trips from Surat Thani: Chaiya, Khanom, Samui and More for variety.

Safety and practical tips

Missed connections are the main risk. If you arrive late, you may miss the last boat and need a night in town. Keep your luggage light for ferry transfers, and carry valuables on your person.

Travel insurance is worth buying if you have ferry bookings or a flight onward from an island. Sea conditions change quickly. Ask your accommodation or the pier staff about swimming conditions, rather than assuming a beach is safe on any given day.
