Last updated November 2026: night markets in Chiang Mai follow a weekly rhythm, not a single address. A daily Night Bazaar anchors the week, and two walking streets close roads on Saturday and Sunday. Choose your night first, then choose the market that fits it.

4 Night Markets in Chiang Mai to Plan Your Week Around

Four markets cover most visits. Hours in published sources conflict, so treat every time below as typical and confirm locally before you go. For a wider look at daytime options, see our guide to Chiang Mai markets.

  • 1. Chiang Mai Night Bazaar (every night)
    • Sits on Chang Klan Road, east of the old city, and runs nightly.
    • Published hours disagree: some sources say about 7pm to midnight, others roughly 6pm to 11pm.
    • Best for a short stay or a weeknight, since no other market here runs every evening.
  • 2. Saturday Walking Street on Wua Lai Road
    • Starts around 5pm and typically runs until midnight.
    • Wua Lai Road sits just outside the Old Town walls and closes to traffic, with stalls stretching over half a mile.
    • Souvenir stands and foot massages are the draw.
  • 3. Sunday Walking Street on Ratchadamnoen Road
    • Fills Ratchadamnoen Road opposite Tha Phae Gate and is the larger and busier of the two walking streets.
    • Expect stalls, live music and a small food court roughly halfway along the left side when you walk from the Chiang Mai Gate end.
    • Hours vary by source, so confirm the start time locally.
  • 4. Chiang Mai Gate Market (food stop)
    • Reported open from about 4pm to 2am daily, across from the start of Wua Lai Road.
    • Street food specialties make it a practical dinner stop before or after the Saturday walking street.
    • Verify current hours, since only one source in our research lists them.

Night Markets in Chiang Mai by Day of the Week

No single market works every night, so match your arrival to the calendar. Monday through Friday, the Night Bazaar is the dependable option. Some snippets mention a Friday old-town evening market, but its name and location are unverified, so ask your hotel before relying on it.

Night Bazaar Versus the Walking Streets

Night Bazaar stalls are permanent and the zone runs daily, so you can drop in on any evening. Walking streets are weekly, close their roads to traffic and lean toward crafts and food. Short on time? Pick the weekend walking street if your dates allow, and the Night Bazaar if they do not. For fuller route detail, read our walking street guide. Skip the walking streets if you arrive only Monday through Friday, since neither runs on those nights.

Best Chiang Mai Night Markets for Street Food

Start at Chiang Mai Gate Market, then walk Wua Lai Road on Saturday. On Sunday, eat at the small food court on Ratchadamnoen Road after you have browsed. Khao soi, pad Thai, oyster omelettes and fruit drinks are all named in published tips. For shopping-first nights, walk the full stall run first and eat last, when crowds thin near the end of the street.

Tip

Gate Market opens from about 4pm to 2am, so a Saturday dinner there can run before the walking street starts around 5pm.

Getting Around and Where to Stay

Sponsored

Stay inside the Old Town if you want Saturday and Sunday markets on foot, since Wua Lai Road and Tha Phae Gate sit at its edge. The Night Bazaar zone lies east of the old city, so expect a short ride or longer walk. Songthaews, tuk-tuks and Grab are the usual options, but no fares are confirmed here. Agree on a price or use the meter before you ride. Plan the return trip before you leave, since late-night rides are scarcer than evening ones.

Cash, Bargaining and Crowd Tips

Most stalls do not accept credit cards, so carry Thai baht in small bills. Haggling is common across Thailand, yet more vendors now show fixed prices. If a price is displayed, a discount is unlikely unless you buy several items from one seller. Arrive near opening time to beat crowds, since both walking streets fill up after dark. Comfortable shoes matter because side streets invite long detours.

Rain, Heat and Other Markets Worth Knowing

Open-air markets suffer in downpours and hot evenings. Indoor shopping is the fallback, and our Chiang Mai malls guide covers options. Check Central Festival Chiangmai for its current mall details. Warorot and similar day markets are covered in the broader markets guide. For a different, non-night experience, see the floating market, which is not an evening market.

Mistakes to Avoid

Sponsored

Arriving on the wrong weekday is the most common error, so check the table above. Relying on cards is the second, which leaves you unable to pay at most stalls. Also avoid arriving with no plan for the ride home. Finally, do not expect a walking street with strollers or mobility aids at peak time, since crowds on Ratchadamnoen Road are dense.
