Last updated November 2026. Phi Phi Muay Thai comes in three formats: beginner group classes, traditional gym training, and ring bouts staged at bars in Tonsai Village. Classes suit first-timers, gyms suit people who want real instruction, and bar shows suit spectators who want a loud night out. Contact sports and alcohol do not mix well, so read the safety notes before you volunteer for anything. For wider island planning, start with our Phi Phi activity guide.

Phi Phi Muay Thai: Which Option Fits You

Start with one question: do you want to hit things, watch people hit things, or learn technique? Each answer points to a different venue type. Search listings suggest Koh Phi Phi has all three. Small island venues change hands and schedules often, so treat every detail below as a lead to confirm. Prices are deliberately absent because no current rate could be verified for this guide.

Beginner group classes on Koh Phi Phi

A booking-style listing describes a 75-minute group session with daily slots for beginners and experienced participants. That length fits a half-day gap between a ferry arrival and an evening plan. Expect warm-ups, stance and footwork, pad work, and conditioning, which is the usual shape of a tourist class. Confirm four things before paying: the price, the start time, the meeting point, and the cancellation terms. A separate social post advertises a beach-side beginner session, possibly weekly on Wednesdays. Social posts go stale, so message the organizer before planning around it.

Good to know

Budget for the walk on top of the 75-minute group session, since venues on car-free Koh Phi Phi Don are reached on foot.

Traditional gym training at Songthai

Sponsored

Songthai appears in search results as a venue offering authentic Muay Thai training. One listing shows Sunday opening hours of 08:00 to 20:00. A single day's hours rarely describe a full week, so confirm the weekly timetable with the gym. Ask whether drop-ins are accepted and whether gloves and wraps are provided. Ask too whether private coaching exists, since that is unverified. Choose a gym over a tourist class if you have trained before or want a proper session instead of a taster.

Watching or entering a bar fight

Ring bouts are staged at bars in Tonsai Village, and Reggae Bar is the venue most often named. Listings describe a kick-boxing show with drink offers and volunteer fights. Another listing describes tourist-versus-tourist bouts where the winner gets a bucket of a favorite drink. It is unconfirmed whether both describe the same ring. Call it a show, not a lesson. Spectating is the low-risk way in. Pair it with the rest of the island after dark in our Phi Phi nightlife guide. For other venues, browse Phi Phi Bars: Best Bars & Beach Clubs by Vibe (2026).

  • Skip volunteer bouts if you have been drinking, since alcohol and head contact are a poor pairing.
  • Skip them if you have never been taught a guard or how to take a hit.
  • Skip them if your travel insurance terms are unchecked; do not assume any policy covers combat sports.
  • Skip them if you have a boat or flight the next morning.

Planning Muay Thai around your Phi Phi day

Everyone arrives and leaves by boat, so anchor the plan to your ferry time. Our guide to reaching the island covers routes. Check sailings on Phi Phi ferry schedules before you book a class. Koh Phi Phi Don is compact and largely car-free, so venues are reached on foot; see Getting Around Phi Phi: Walking, Boats & Costs. Train before a long boat trip at your own risk, because stiff legs and choppy water do not mix. Day-trippers should read Day Trips From Phi Phi: Islands, Mainland & Timing Tips and pick one activity, not three. For heat, ask whether the room is indoors, whether fans run, and whether early or late slots exist. Check the Thai Meteorological Department forecast for current conditions, and see the best time to visit Phi Phi for seasons. Multi-day trainees should compare Where to Stay in Phi Phi: 4 Best Areas Compared.

Pre-booking checklist

Small venues change often, and English, Thai, and booking-page details can differ. Cross-check before you commit.

Tip

Heat makes early or late slots worth asking about, and Songthai's listed Sunday hours of 08:00 to 20:00 bracket both ends of the day.

  • Current address and whether the venue is still operating.
  • Opening days and class start times.
  • Price, what it includes, and cancellation terms.
  • Meeting point, such as the venue itself or the pier.
  • Whether gloves, wraps, and water are provided.
  • Volunteer-bout rules, age limits, and alcohol policy for bar rings.
  • Whether a hotel or pier pickup is offered.

Mistakes to avoid

Sponsored

Most problems come from mixing formats or trusting old posts.

  • Training the morning after a bar night.
  • Skipping water in tropical heat.
  • Assuming a show doubles as a lesson.
  • Booking from a social reel without confirming the current schedule.
  • Joining a volunteer bout without understanding the rules.
  • Scheduling a session right before a ferry departure.
