Last updated November 2026: Railay beaches are four separate stretches on a boat-access peninsula in Krabi, and each suits a different kind of visit. West is for swimming and sunsets, East is for walking, Phra Nang is for scenery, and Tonsai is for quiet. Choose your beach here, then use our Railay activity guide to fill the day.
Railay Beaches at a Glance

Railay is a peninsula in the Krabi region, not far from Ao Nang. Travel guides agree there is no direct overland access, so every visitor arrives by boat. Beach choice then shapes your crowds, your swim and your walking. Use this table as a first filter.
| Beach | Swimming | Crowds | Scenery | Best for | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Railay West | Best option for a full swim | Busiest, with the most longtail boats | Limestone cliffs, village backdrop, sunsets | Beach day and swimming | You want empty sand |
| Railay East | Not a swimming beach | Fewer visitors | Mangroves, fishing boats, a waterside path | Walking and a quiet meal | You came to swim |
| Phra Nang Beach | Possible, with space between boats | Busy in peak season | Cliffs, caves, white sand | Photos and cave visits | You dislike day-tripper boats |
| Tonsai Beach | Reported best at high tide | Quieter than Railay | Small bay, climbing walls | Quiet stays and climbers | You need easy access at low tide |

Railay Beach West
Most visitors land here, including many day trips from Ao Nang. That makes it the busiest beach and the one with the most longtail boats, some parked across a large part of the sand. One traveler guide puts the beach at about 450 m long, so treat that as approximate. It is still the best choice for a long swim and a classic cliff backdrop. Dusky leaf monkeys are occasionally reported in trees near the southern end, but sightings are luck. If you stay overnight, Railay sunset spots start here.
Pair West's sunsets with an overnight stay, since the last boat back usually leaves around 6:00 PM, a time that is unverified.

Railay Beach East
East is a route, not a swim stop. A small path runs along the water past mangroves, fishing boats, shops, and a few hotels, restaurants and bars. Expect mudflats rather than a bathing beach. It draws fewer visitors than West, so it suits a slow walk. From West, the Walking Street links the two coasts. A path at the southern end of East leads inland toward the viewpoint trail. One guide reports about 15–20 minutes to the top after a steep first climb. Red soil stains clothing, and the trail has no safety measures, so wear shoes with grip.
Phra Nang Beach and Its Caves

Phra Nang Cave Beach sits at the southern end of the peninsula and has white sand under tall limestone walls. You can walk there from East, and direct boats also run from Ao Nang. That brings many day-trippers, especially in peak season. Open swimming spots remain because the beach is long and boats spread out. Phra Nang Cave holds a shrine, so dress modestly and keep your voice low inside. Check tides before you go. One guide says the Princess Lagoon trail is steeper than the viewpoint climb and the lagoon nearly empties at low tide. Skip that hike if you have weak knees or no sturdy shoes.
Tonsai Beach

Tonsai sits in a small bay beside Railay and is much quieter. Climbers favor it, and the climbing walls here suit that crowd. One guide measures the beach at about 600 m and says swimming and snorkeling work best at high tide. You have two ways in from Railay. At low tide you can walk from West and scramble over some rocks. Otherwise a jungle path of roughly 20 minutes starts north of East, near Diamond Cave. Longtail boats also reach Tonsai from Ao Nang. Ask locally about tide timing before attempting the rocks.
How to Get to and Between the Railay Beaches

Boats leave from Ao Nang for West and from Krabi Town for East. One traveler guide lists ฿100 per person one way, bought at the Ao Nang beach or the Krabi Town pier. Confirm the current fare locally. The same guide says the last boat back usually leaves around 6:00 PM, which is unverified, so ask your operator. Our Railay transport guide covers the routes. Coming from the capital? See Bangkok to Railay: Fastest, Cheapest & Easiest Routes. For flights into Krabi, check Krabi Airport information. Once there, everything links on foot. A sensible order is West, Walking Street, East, viewpoint, then Phra Nang. Allow extra time for the climbs.
- West to East: cross the village on the Walking Street.
- East to Phra Nang: follow the path south.
- West to Tonsai: walk the shore at low tide, or take the jungle path near Diamond Cave.
Costs, Timing and Where to Stay

Budget for four things: the boat transfer, a room, meals and optional activities. Diamond Cave charged ฿40 entry in one traveler guide, so confirm at the gate. For meals, start with our Railay restaurant picks. A day trip covers West, a walk and one cave. Staying overnight adds sunsets, calm evenings and no boat deadline. West suits first-timers who want a swim at the door. East suits quiet walkers. Tonsai suits climbers. Check seasons on our Railay weather page, plus forecasts from the Thai Meteorological Department. After dark, try the Railay bar scene.
Budget for Diamond Cave's reported ฿40 entry if you walk the jungle path to Tonsai, which starts near that cave.
Mistakes to Avoid
Most problems come from timing and footwear, not from the beaches themselves.
- Missing the last boat: confirm the departure time on arrival.
- Wearing flip-flops on the viewpoint or lagoon trail.
- Ignoring tides on the Princess Lagoon trail and the Tonsai rock walk.
- Choosing East for swimming: use West or Phra Nang instead.
- Treating the shrine cave as a photo set: stay respectful.
