Published figures disagree, so treat every time below as a range. Road sources put the bus at about 4 hours and 200 km, while a private van operator quotes 2.5–3 hours. Train sources give 116 km and roughly 2.5 hours on paper, though one source warns these services rarely run on time. Confirm anything time-critical before you book.

  • Cheapest: the bus, listed at about ฿90–280 depending on operator.
  • Most scenic: the ordinary train from Thon Buri, at ฿100 for foreign visitors per one source.
  • Most flexible: a private car or van, which suits groups and multi-stop days.

Bangkok to Kanchanaburi compared: bus, train, private van

Each mode trades time, cost and flexibility. Buses run often but start and end at terminals. Trains leave only twice a day and are slow, yet they give the most scenic ride. A private van picks you up at your hotel and stops where you ask. Fares below are indicative, drawn from competitor listings rather than official tariffs.

By minivan or bus

Buses leave from the Southern Bus Terminal (Sai Tai Mai) and from Mo Chit, according to one booking site. Departures run about every 30–60 minutes between 04:00 and 20:30. Journey time is listed at about 4 hours, and fares range from ฿90 to ฿280. Operators named in the source include Kanchanaburi Express, MAMA Travel & Tour, Monsiri Travel Kanchanaburi and Tara Tour and Travel. Book at an operator's booth in the terminal, or reserve online ahead of time. Buses end at Kanchanaburi bus station. Motorbike taxis and songthaews run from there to guesthouses. Pick your terminal by which is easier to reach from your hotel, and check current departure times with the operator.

Tip

Bus departures run between 04:00 and 20:30, while the Thon Buri train leaves only twice a day, so buses suit flexible timing.

By train from Thon Buri

Two ordinary trains leave Thon Buri (Bangkok Noi) station, on the west bank of the Chao Phraya. Sources list departures at 07:45 or 07:50, and again at 13:55. Check the State Railway of Thailand timetable for current times. Search for "Thon Buri" rather than "Bangkok" on the SRT site, or you will get no results. One source says the published fare is ฿25 but tourists pay ฿100 to any station on the line. Tickets are sold on the day at the Thon Buri counter. The same source says seats are rarely a problem. Carriages are third class with open windows and fans. The train continues through River Kwai Bridge station to Nam Tok, so choose your stop by where you will base yourself. For background on the line's history, see the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre.

By private car or van, and from the airports

A private van makes sense for groups and for days with several stops. One operator quotes 2.5–3 hours each way and a 10-hour round trip. That operator's rate includes petrol, tolls and parking, and excludes attraction tickets. Overtime is listed at ฿300 per hour for an SUV and ฿350 per hour for a van. Visiting Erawan or Hellfire Pass adds ฿500 under that operator's terms, which should not be treated as a general cost. Confirm four things in any quote: inclusions, overtime, attraction fees and the exact vehicle model. Private transfer is also the simplest route from Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK). Public transport from either airport needs several transfers, and the routing is unverified here, so check it with the airport operators.

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip works if you start early. One operator suggests leaving Bangkok at 07:00, and others advise 06:30–07:00 when Erawan is included. With about 2.5–4 hours each way, a day trip leaves limited time on the ground. Stay a night if you want the Erawan falls or Hellfire Pass without a rush. Is Kanchanaburi Worth Visiting? Getting back to Bangkok

Return times are not verified in the sources, so confirm the last departure for your mode before you commit. Buses are described as running to the Southern Bus Terminal, and the train as returning to Thonburi. A taxi or ride-hail then covers the last stretch into the city. If you are at Erawan, start back around 16:30–17:00, since arrival in Bangkok depends on traffic. One operator estimates 17:30–18:30 arrival after a 15:00 departure. For flights, pre-book a private return transfer instead of relying on public transport. Leave a generous buffer before any airport check-in.

Good to know

Start back from Erawan around 16:30–17:00 when a day trip runs 2.5–4 hours each way, since traffic decides arrival.

Mistakes to avoid

Sponsored

Most problems come from planning too tightly. Use this checklist before you go.

  • Searching "Bangkok" on the SRT site instead of "Thon Buri".
  • Assuming the train runs on time.
  • Leaving Erawan after 17:00.
  • Not fixing the vehicle model in a private quote.
  • Paying on the day without checking the fare.
