Getting Around Kanchanaburi: Bike, Tuk-Tuk, Train & Bus
How to get around Kanchanaburi: bike, tuk-tuk, train, bus, motorbike or tour. Which suits each sight, with distances, timing and trade-offs.
On this page
Last updated November 2026: getting around Kanchanaburi is easy in the town core and harder toward Erawan and Hellfire Pass. Walk, cycle, or hop in a tuk-tuk near the River Kwai Bridge. For farther sights, choose a bus, the train plus onward transport, a rented vehicle, or a tour.

The short answer: which way to go
Distance, heat, license and group size decide everything. Undecided about the trip itself? Our guide on whether Kanchanaburi is worth visiting helps. Otherwise, match your stop to a mode below.

- Kanchanaburi station, Don-Rak War Cemetery, the bridge and JEATH War Museum: walk or cycle.
- Chui Kai War Cemetery, about 3 km south of the bridge: bicycle or tuk-tuk.
- Tham Krasae: train, then a 450 m walk of about 10 minutes.
- Hellfire Pass: train to Nam Tok station, then a bus of about 15 minutes.
- Erawan: bus from Kanchanaburi bus station, about 1 hour.
- Wat Tham Sua: taxi, about 25 minutes from the bridge.
Getting around Kanchanaburi: how the town and sights are laid out
Mueang Kanchanaburi district holds most attractions and restaurants. Don-Rak War Cemetery sits next to Kanchanaburi station. River Kwai Bridge station is about 200 m from the bridge, and JEATH War Museum is walkable from there. Chui Kai War Cemetery lies about 3 km south of the bridge. Beyond town, the rail line runs on through Tham Krasae station to Nam Tok, while Erawan needs a separate bus. Planning your sights first? Start with our Kanchanaburi sightseeing guide. Compare your options
Cost tiers below are relative. Verify any baht figure locally before you rely on it.
| Mode | Best for | Limits | Cost tier |
|---|---|---|---|
| Walking | Station, Don-Rak cemetery, bridge, JEATH | Midday heat; no shade on the bridge | Free |
| Bicycle | Town core and Chui Kai cemetery | Heat and humidity; distance to out-of-town sights | Lowest paid tier |
| Tuk-tuk | Short hops, hot afternoons | Agree the fare before boarding | Low; ask locally |
| Train | Bridge, Tham Krasae, Nam Tok | Timetable changes; no stop at Hellfire Pass | Low; check State Railway of Thailand |
| Bus | Erawan | Last return can be early | Low; ask at the bus station |
| Motorbike | Confident, licensed riders | International license and passport deposit often requested | Mid; ask locally |
| Hired car or van, tour | Groups of 3+, multi-stop days | Fixed schedule; price varies | Highest; split among riders |

On foot and by bicycle
Walking the River Kwai Bridge takes about 10 minutes. A competitor guide reports the bridge as open 24 hours, but daytime is safer. Trains slow down and sound whistles, so step into the platforms provided. Bicycles suit the town core and the 3 km ride to Chui Kai. A 2023 blog reported rentals from roughly ฿50 per day, so confirm the current rate. Heat is the real limit. April to June highs usually pass 35°C (95°F), so ride early and carry water. Check forecasts with the Thai Meteorological Department. Our seasonal timing guide covers the rest.
April to June highs usually pass 35°C (95°F), so the sample town day saves Chui Kai for the cooler late afternoon.
Tuk-tuks, songthaews and taxis

Tuk-tuks cover short hops between hotel, bridge and JEATH War Museum. A 2023 guide reported roughly ฿40 from a town hotel to the bridge, but that figure may be outdated. Agree the price before boarding. Ask whether a return fare with waiting time is possible. Taxis make sense for Wat Tham Sua, about 25 minutes from the bridge. Stairs to the top take about 10 minutes, or you can use the cable car. Our temple guide covers the visit itself. Songthaew routes and fares were not verified for this page, so ask your guesthouse. For late returns, see the night market notes.
Riding the Death Railway as transport
Stations run in this order: Kanchanaburi, River Kwai Bridge, Tham Krasae, Nam Tok. Kanchanaburi station is a short walk from Don-Rak cemetery. Trains reportedly run roughly 7am to 6pm. Sources conflict on frequency: one lists several trains, another only 2 daily each way. Confirm the current timetable with State Railway of Thailand before planning. At Tham Krasae, walking the 450 m bridge is usually allowed from about 8am to 5pm. Keep watching for approaching trains and step clear early. For background on the line, see the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre. Hellfire Pass has no train stop. Ride to Nam Tok, then take a bus of about 15 minutes.

Buses and the Erawan run
Buses to Erawan leave from Kanchanaburi bus station. Reported journey times range from about 1 hour to 1.5 hours. Erawan opens 08:00 to 16:30, and visitors spend about 3 hours on site. A 2023 guide reported hourly buses from 8:00 AM and a last return at 5:00 PM. Verify that time at the station, because stranding yourself after closing is the main risk. Fares were reported around ฿40 one way, also unverified. Pair this trip with other far-flung options in our day trip ideas.
Wat Tham Sua closes at 5pm, while Erawan opens 08:00 to 16:30, so combining both in one day means an early start.
Renting a motorbike or car
Rental shops often ask for an international license and your passport as a deposit. Confirm license and insurance rules with the shop and a current official source. A 2023 guide quoted about ฿200 per day for a motorbike, but that figure was garbled. Treat it as a prompt to ask, not a price. Always wear a helmet. Skip riding if you lack a valid license, feel unsure in traffic, or travel with young children or older relatives. A rental car suits groups who want flexibility.
Tours and private drivers: when they beat DIY

Hellfire Pass opens 9am to 4pm and Erawan closes at 16:30. Fitting both, plus Tham Krasae, into one day by public transport is unrealistic. With 3 or more people, a hired car or van becomes competitive because you split one fare. Solo travelers usually do better with buses and trains. Ask drivers for the total price, stops and waiting time up front. No operator names are listed here because none were verified.
Sample day plans by mode
Each plan clusters stops by direction so you avoid backtracking.
- Town day on foot or bike: Kanchanaburi station, Don-Rak cemetery, River Kwai Bridge and JEATH War Museum, then Chui Kai cemetery 3 km south in the cooler late afternoon.
- Train plus Hellfire Pass: check the timetable, ride to Nam Tok, then take the bus of about 15 minutes. Allow about 3 hours at the memorial museum, open 9am to 4pm. Confirm the last return before you leave.
- Erawan plus Wat Tham Sua by hired vehicle: reach Erawan for 08:00, allow about 3 hours, then visit Wat Tham Sua before its 5pm close.
Mistakes to avoid
Most problems come from timing, not distance.
- Starting Erawan late and missing the last bus back.
- Assuming the train reaches Hellfire Pass.
- Cycling at midday in April to June heat.
- Trusting an old timetable instead of checking State Railway of Thailand.
- Walking the bridge after dark without a light.
- Renting a motorbike without a valid license.
