Last updated November 2026. Going from Bangkok to Phuket comes down to three options: a flight of roughly 1 h 35 m, a train to Surat Thani plus a bus, or a direct overnight bus of 12–14 h. Fliers save the most time, bus riders spend the least on the ticket, and the train suits people who want a rail leg. Use this guide to match the route to your budget, luggage and arrival hour.

Quick answer: three ways to get from Bangkok to Phuket

Flying is the fastest option. Search snippets put a nonstop flight at about 1 h 35 m over roughly 693 km. Treat those figures as a guide and confirm them with your airline. Phuket has no railway station, so the train option ends at Surat Thani. From there, a bus of about 4 h 30 m reaches Phuket. Direct buses run VIP at about 12–13 h and standard at about 13–14 h. This table sets the three modes side by side. Fares change by date and operator, so no prices appear here. Check the operator sites named in each section before you book. Journey times are the reported ranges and exclude transfers unless noted.

Flying from Bangkok to Phuket: airports, door-to-door time and the beach leg

Bangkok has two airports, Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK). Your airline decides which one you use, so read the booking confirmation before you plan the ride to the terminal. A 1 h 35 m flight is only the middle of the trip. Add a check-in buffer, the road to the Bangkok airport and the road from Phuket International Airport to your beach. Traffic often turns a short flight into a half-day journey. Read the Phuket airport arrival guide for the terminal and transfer options. If you want one ticket covering Bangkok and Phuket, ask whether an open-jaw or separate tickets suits your dates. Compare the airline's own conditions rather than assuming a rule applies.

Train plus bus via Surat Thani: how it works and when it makes sense

Phuket has no railway station, so every train itinerary ends with a road leg. Snippets mention 10 trains a day from Bangkok to Surat Thani. Confirm departures, sleeper classes and fares on the State Railway of Thailand site. From Surat Thani Railway Station, a bus of about 4 h 30 m continues to Phuket. The risk is the connection. A delayed train can miss the onward bus, and you may lose time waiting for the next one. An overnight train can replace a hotel night, but sleeper details need checking with the railway before you rely on them.

  • Book the train and the onward bus separately unless a single operator sells both.
  • Leave a buffer between arrival at Surat Thani and the bus departure.
  • Keep your valuables with you on both legs.

Direct bus: VIP vs standard, terminals and the overnight trade-off

Direct buses leave from Bangkok's southern bus terminal, often called Sai Tai Mai. Confirm the terminal name with the operator. VIP coaches take about 12–13 h, and standard coaches take about 13–14 h. Check schedules and fares through Transport Co., Ltd., which runs Thai intercity buses. An overnight bus saves a hotel night and a flight fare. In return, you arrive tired and may land at dawn with few transfers running. Phuket's bus arrival point is often not the beach area, so budget for an onward ride. Read about tuk-tuk fares and bargaining before you accept the first quote at the terminal.

Which option fits you

Choose by your main constraint, not by the headline time. If you have two or three days in Phuket, the 1 h 35 m flight protects your beach time. If budget matters most, the direct bus usually costs less than a flight, and a night on board covers a bed. Motion sickness points toward flying or the train. Heavy luggage favors the bus, which has one handover, over the train with two legs. Rainy-season delays hit buses and airports differently, so keep a spare half-day if your onward plans are rigid. Late-night arrivals favor the airport, where taxis are easier to find than at a bus terminal.

Tip

With 10 trains a day to Surat Thani, rail riders still need a buffer, because a delayed train can miss the onward bus.

Getting from your arrival point to your Phuket beach

Your arrival point matters as much as the mode. Airport, bus terminal and Surat Thani drop-offs all lead to different last legs. Taxis and pre-booked vans serve Patong, Karon, Kata and Kamala. If you are heading to Karon, read the guide to Karon-bound transfers. For public transport, tuk-tuks and rides around the island, see island transport options. Agree the fare before you get in. Ask for the beach name, not just the town, so the driver understands your drop-off.

Good to know

An overnight bus of 12–14 h may drop you at dawn, often away from the beach, so pre-book your last leg.

Mistakes to avoid

Most problems come from small planning errors. Check these before you pay.

  • Booking the wrong Bangkok airport: confirm BKK or DMK on your ticket.
  • Cutting train and bus connections too tight at Surat Thani.
  • Arriving at night with no onward transport arranged.
  • Assuming a ferry is part of this route: it is not. Ferries matter for island-hopping only, as in the Phuket ferry guide.
  • Quoting prices from old pages: confirm every fare with the operator.
