Last updated November 2026: Phuket airport (HKT) sits at Mai Khao in the island's north, more than 30 km from the main beaches. That distance shapes every choice you make on arrival, from transport to hotel location. Start with the table below, then read the trade-offs for your own bags, budget and arrival hour. For the island-wide picture, see our Phuket transport hub.

Phuket Airport at a Glance

HKT is the island's only commercial airport. It sits in Mai Khao, at the northern end of Phuket. One search snippet gives about 32 km to downtown Phuket, while our notes say 30+ km to the main beaches. Treat both as rough figures and confirm the details with Airports of Thailand before you plan a tight connection. Karon, Kata and Patong all lie to the south and west, so expect a long ride rather than a quick hop. Staying in the north near Mai Khao shortens that ride but moves you away from the main beach strips.

  • IATA code: HKT
  • Location: Mai Khao, northern Phuket
  • Distance to the main beaches: 30+ km, depending on the beach
  • Terminals: a Domestic Terminal beside the International Terminal
  • Operator: Airports of Thailand, which is the source for terminal and facility facts

No fare below is verified for 2026. Fixed prices change, so we use relative bands and point you to the official taxi counter for the live quote. Patong, Karon and Kata are the longest rides. Phuket Town is the middle option. Bang Tao and the other northern beaches are the shortest. Tuk-tuks are not a value pick for this distance, so save Phuket tuk-tuks for short local hops.

Tip

Budget for 30+ km to the main beaches, and expect the longest ride if you head to Patong, Karon or Kata.

  • Pick the taxi counter if you land late, travel with children, or head to Karon, Kata or Patong.
  • Pick an app if you have mobile data and a flexible schedule.
  • Pick the bus or minibus if you pack light and the saving matters more than time.

Taxi, Ride-Hailing, Minibus or Bus: Trade-offs

Official taxi counter staff quote a price by destination before you ride. One snippet suggests fares differ sharply between Patong and nearer areas. Ask for the printed or stated fare and check it against the counter's current board. Touts in the arrivals hall may offer rides at a higher price, so walk past them to the counter. Apps such as Bolt and InDrive can undercut the counter. Airport pickup rules can limit where drivers stop, so check the pickup point in the app and send a message to the driver. Late-night arrivals should not count on buses, since first and last departures are unverified. Plan on a taxi or a pre-booked transfer if you land after the public services stop. Confirm current hours with the airport or the operator.

  • Taxi counter: fixed per destination, so confirm the amount before you get in.
  • Apps: cheaper at times, but pickup zones and surge pricing vary.
  • Minibus: shared, so expect extra stops before your hotel.
  • Bus: cheapest, but check the route and last departure first.

Arrivals: The First 30 Minutes

Plan for immigration first, then baggage, then customs and the arrivals hall. Queue length depends on how many flights land together, so we give no fixed time. Pick up a SIM and withdraw some baht at the ATMs before you leave the terminal. Currency exchange rates and SIM prices change often, so compare the counters in the hall before you commit. Keep enough cash for a taxi or minibus in case an app fails. Then follow the signs to the ground-transport area and go to the official counter or the pickup point. Have your hotel's name written in Thai or shown on your phone, because drivers may not know every small property.

Domestic and International Terminals

Sponsored

A snippet describes a Domestic Terminal next to the International Terminal, with renovation work between 2016 and 2018. Verify how the two connect and whether anything changed since then. Domestic flights, including the Bangkok service, use the domestic side, and overseas flights use the international side. If you connect between the two, allow extra time to move between buildings and recheck baggage rules. Our guide to the Bangkok to Phuket flight covers that leg. Other ways to reach the island appear in our guide to reaching Phuket.

Good to know

Renovation work between 2016 and 2018 is old, so confirm the current terminal link with Airports of Thailand before a tight transfer.

Departing From HKT

Follow your airline's check-in cutoff, because it differs by carrier and fare. The road south is the main variable. A worked example: from Patong, allow the longest drive to Mai Khao, then add the airline's check-in window and a buffer for security. From Phuket Town, the drive is shorter, so you can leave later. Traffic in the south and around Patong can add delay, so build in extra margin on a morning flight. Book the taxi the night before for an early departure. Check airside shops and food on the Airports of Thailand page rather than relying on a fixed list.

Arriving Without Flying

Not every arrival comes through HKT. Ferries link the island with other coasts, and our Phuket ferry guide covers sea routes. Intercity coaches run from the mainland, and Transport Co., Ltd. is the national bus operator to check for routes and times. If your real goal is the south-west beaches, our Bangkok to Karon route explains the full trip.

Mistakes to Avoid

Sponsored

Most airport problems come from poor planning rather than bad luck. Avoid these five.

  • Booking a hotel in Kata or Patong without allowing for the long drive from HKT.
  • Accepting a tout's offer in the arrivals hall instead of using the official counter.
  • Assuming buses run late at night without checking the last departure.
  • Relying on an app pickup without confirming the meeting point with the driver.
  • Leaving the hotel too late on a departure day, especially from Patong.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much time before should I reach Phuket airport?

Follow your airline's check-in cutoff, since it differs by carrier and fare. Add the drive time from your beach, which is longest from Patong, Karon and Kata. Leave extra margin for traffic on the way to Mai Khao.

Is there any airport in Phuket?

Yes, Phuket International Airport (HKT) serves the island from Mai Khao in the north. It has a Domestic Terminal beside the International Terminal. Check Airports of Thailand for current facilities.
