Last updated November 2026: a Phuket ferry is not one service but several routes from different piers. Rassada Pier on the Phuket Town side handles Koh Phi Phi and Krabi departures, while Chalong Pier handles the Racha Islands and speedboat day trips. Pick your destination first, then the pier, then the boat type, and use our guide to Getting Around Phuket: Best Options, Costs & Tips for the land leg.

Most travellers searching for a Phuket ferry want Koh Phi Phi. Ferryhopper's listing shows Rassada Pier to Tonsai Pier running daily, with the sea distance given as about 22 nautical miles (40 km). Other destinations use other piers. Treat every figure in this guide as a planning lead and confirm it with the operator before you pay.

Good to know

Rassada to Tonsai is about 22 nautical miles (40 km) by sea, yet Ferryhopper puts high-speed boats at roughly 1 to 1.5 hours.

Which Pier for Which Destination

Rassada Pier sits near Phuket Town and serves the Phi Phi and Krabi boats. Ferryhopper says it is reachable by bus, taxi, minivan or private transfer from Patong, Karon and the airport. Chalong Pier is the base for Racha Islands boats and speedboat day trips. Check the pier printed on your ticket, because the two docks are separate trips by road. From the airport, start with our Phuket airport transport guide. For short hops to a dock, read about the Phuket tuk-tuk system and agree the fare before you get in.

  • Phi Phi and Krabi: Rassada Pier.
  • Racha Islands and speedboat day trips: Chalong Pier.
  • Koh Lanta: confirm the pier and operator before booking.
  • Yao islands: no verified departure pier in our sources, so check with the operator.

Phuket to Phi Phi: Ferry vs Speedboat

Sponsored

Ferryhopper gives a general range of 1 to 3 hours for the crossing. It puts high-speed boats at roughly 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the arrival pier. Its Rassada to Laemtong listing shows a shortest trip of 1h 30m. Larger ferries ride more steadily, while speedboats can feel rougher in choppy water. Tonsai Pier is the main port on Koh Phi Phi Don, within walking distance of the village, guesthouses and restaurants. Laemtong Pier lies in the northeast, which Ferryhopper describes as quieter and closer to upscale resorts. Choose Tonsai if you want to walk to your room. Choose Laemtong only if your resort is on that side.

Other Routes: Krabi, Koh Lanta and the Yao Islands

Krabi boats leave from the Rassada side, but our sources give no verified crossing time. Check the current timetable with the operator. Koh Lanta appears in search snippets with a Chean Vanich Pier departure and a ferry-plus-van combo. We could not confirm either, so verify before you build a plan around it. Yao islands departures show up in snippets too. Their details are also unverified, so skip them unless an operator confirms the route. Racha Islands trips go from Chalong Pier and are usually bought as day tours.

Costs and What Drives Them

Sponsored

We have no verified baht fares, so we do not quote any. Aggregator tables for this route mix ordinary tickets with entries that look like private charters or data errors. Price depends on the operator, the boat type, the departure pier and the season. A slow ferry is normally the cheapest way across, and a speedboat or private charter costs more. Ask whether the fare includes a pier transfer or hotel pickup, and whether any pier fee is added. Always confirm the final amount in baht with the operator or at the pier counter.

Booking and Timing

Aggregators give convenience and one checkout for several operators, but they may add fees. Booking direct gives you the operator's own change rules. Ferryhopper advises arriving at Rassada Pier at least 30 minutes before departure. It also suggests booking 1 to 2 months ahead for peak season, which it defines as December to April. Treat those as the aggregator's advice, not official rules. Never rely on a screenshot of an old timetable. Reconfirm the departure time a day before you travel.

Tip

Rassada Pier serves Phi Phi and Krabi boats and is reachable from Patong and Karon, so arrive at least 30 minutes before departure.

Luggage, Kids, Pets and Comfort

Ferryhopper reports one bag plus one hand-luggage item per passenger, up to 25 kg combined. It says infants up to 3 years old usually travel free. It also says pets are not allowed on the Phi Phi route. Cabins are not typical. Seating is open and unassigned, with air-conditioned indoor areas and usually open decks. Operators differ, so check the rules on your ticket. Ferries on this route do not carry vehicles, and Phi Phi Don is car-free.

Season, Weather and Cancellations

Sponsored

Andaman Sea conditions can delay or cancel crossings, mostly in rough-weather months. We found no sourced month ranges, so ask the operator which months are affected. Ferryhopper says a cancelled trip can usually be exchanged for another departure or refunded through the operator. Leave a buffer of at least one night before an international flight. Keep a fallback in mind, such as a road route or a domestic flight.

Mistakes to Avoid

Most ferry problems come from planning errors made before the boat even leaves.

  • Going to the wrong pier, such as Chalong instead of Rassada.
  • Having no airport buffer on the day you fly out.
  • Trusting a stale schedule instead of reconfirming.
  • Assuming hotel pickup is included in the ticket.
  • Ignoring sea conditions in rough-weather months.
  • Packing over the operator's luggage limit.

When to Skip the Ferry

Short stays with tight flight connections are better served by flying or driving. So are travellers with heavy luggage, mobility limits or a tendency to get seasick. If you are still choosing how to reach the island, read How to Get to Phuket: Flights, Bus, Ferry & Transfers. For the capital leg, compare flights in our Bangkok to Phuket guide. Overland buyers can check Thai intercity bus operator Transport Co. for current routes.
