Last updated November 2026: for most travelers, the best way to cover Bangkok to Sukhothai is the direct bus, listed at roughly 6h15 to 7h30. Take the train to Phitsanulok plus a bus if you want a more comfortable, slower day. Fly only if saving time matters more than saving money, and remember that Sukhothai has no train station.

Road distance is roughly 425 km, and bus timetables list 6h15 to 7h30 for the trip. Fares run ฿376 to ฿461 as of 2026. That makes the direct bus the simplest default. Pick another mode only if one of the situations below fits you. If you are still deciding whether the stop earns its place, read our verdict on whether Sukhothai is worth visiting.

  • Choose the bus if you want one ticket, a low fare, and a drop-off in town.
  • Choose the train plus bus if you prefer a seat with legroom and can spend most of a day.
  • Choose the flight if you have only one or two nights and a higher budget.
  • Choose a daytime departure over a night bus unless your hotel allows very early check-in.

By Bus: Direct From Bangkok

Direct buses leave Bangkok's Mo Chit (Northern) Bus Terminal. Confirm your operator's departure point when you book, because terminals can change. Listed departures run from 08:10 to 20:30, including 09:30, 10:00, 11:30, 14:00 and 18:10. Fares span ฿376 to ฿461 depending on operator and class. For operator details, start with the Transport Co. bus service. Online booking works well for this long route. Short hops from Sukhothai are usually sold in person at the station. A night bus rarely makes sense on a trip this short. Late departures can reach Sukhothai at 3 or 4am. Aim for the latest night departure if you must travel after dark.

By Train via Phitsanulok

Sukhothai has no station, so you ride to Phitsanulok and switch to a bus. Special Express #7 leaves Krungthep Apiwat at 07:30 and reaches Phitsanulok at 11:58. Rapid #111 leaves at 07:50 and arrives at 14:10. Check current fares and booking rules on the State Railway of Thailand site. Reserve ahead in high season. From Phitsanulok, buses run hourly from 07:00 to 18:00. They cover about 63 km in roughly 1h for ฿39. Tuk-tuks link the railway station to the bus station. The combination has more moving parts than the direct bus. Take the earlier train if you want a buffer for the transfer.

Good to know

Special Express #7 leaves at 07:30, before the first listed direct bus at 08:10, though its arrival at 11:58 still needs a bus.

By Air

Sukhothai Airport (THS) is a private airport owned by Bangkok Airways. It sits 30 km north of New Sukhothai and has a couple of daily flights via Suvarnabhumi (BKK). Flying takes about 1h20, but check that the route still operates before you plan around it. Our Sukhothai Airport guide covers the airfield itself. Public minibuses to New Sukhothai cost ฿180 per person. A yellow songthaew from the bus station to the airport costs ฿18 and runs twice daily. AirAsia and Nok Air sell "fly and ride" tickets via Phitsanulok Airport, about 65 km east of New Sukhothai. Those flights use Don Mueang (DMK). Add airport transfers to your budget before you compare the flight with the bus.

Stay near the old city if you want mornings among the ruins. Stay in the new town if you want more restaurants nearby. Bicycles rent for about ฿50 at most guesthouses. Motorbikes cost ฿200 to ฿300.

Best Time to Travel and What to Avoid

Highs reach around 37°C, and April is the hottest month. December is the coldest and driest, and October is the wettest. Check Thai Meteorological Department forecasts before you go. Our Sukhothai weather guide breaks down each season. Plan ruins visits for early morning or late afternoon in hot months. Avoid these three mistakes.

  • Night-bus arrival: a 3 or 4am drop-off clashes with a typical 14:00 check-in.
  • Last bus back: the final bus from Si Satchanalai to Sukhothai leaves around 15:00, and the outbound fare is ฿50.
  • Assuming a station: Sukhothai has no train station, so budget for the Phitsanulok transfer.
