Best day trips from Chiang Mai sorted by drive time, with transport options, who should skip each, and rainy-season notes.
On this page
Last updated November 2026: the best day trips from Chiang Mai are Doi Suthep for views, Doi Inthanon for altitude and Chiang Dao for caves. Most fit into one day from a Chiang Mai base, so we sort them by drive time instead of theme. Pair this guide with our Chiang Mai things to do overview for the city days in between.

Quick answer: best day trips from Chiang Mai
Pick by what you want from the day. Altitude and cool air point to Doi Inthanon. Temples and city views point to Doi Suthep and Wat Umong. Caves point to Chiang Dao. Quiet villages and coffee point to Baan Mae Kampong. Most of these are one day from an old-town base. We'd keep Chiang Rai for a long day or an overnight stay, covered below. Our full-day pick is Doi Inthanon, and our half-day pick is Wat Umong plus Doi Suthep.
Day trips at a glance
Every time below is approximate and counts one way from the old town. Confirm hours and fees before you leave. Chiang Rai is the outlier, with group tours running about 14 hours.

| Trip | Approx. one-way time | Day length | Effort | Skip if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wat Umong | About 20 min | Half day | Low | You dislike tunnels |
| Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden | About 30 min | Half day | Low to medium | Heavy rain is forecast (canopy walk may close) |
| Doi Suthep | About 50 min | Half day | Low | Winding roads make you queasy |
| Chiang Dao caves | About 1 hour by van | Full day | Medium | Caves make you uneasy |
| Doi Inthanon | About 2 hours | Full day | Medium | You have only one free day and want a slow pace |
| Baan Mae Kampong, Treehouse, Chae Son | About 40-50 km east | Full day | High | You have no 4WD or driver |
| Chiang Rai | About 1.5 hours to a first stop, then 1.5 more on tours | 14-hour tour day | High | You want a relaxed day |
Under 1 hour: half-day trips

Wat Umong sits about 20 minutes west of the old town. Grounds open 6am-5pm and are free, with a small tunnel fee of about ฿30. Pair it with Baan Kang Wat, an artist village at the Doi Suthep foothills, for one easy morning. Queen Sirikit Botanical Garden is roughly 30 minutes west. Entry is about ฿50 per person, and 2-3 hours covers it. Its 400-meter canopy walk may close in rain, so check before you go. Doi Suthep takes about 50 minutes one way and peaks at 1,676 m. Wat Doi Suthep's golden stupa is best near sunset, and our guide to sunset spots in the city covers timing. Add more stops from Chiang Mai's temple guide. Skip Doi Suthep if winding roads make you queasy. Families get the shortest drives of any trip in this guide.
1-2 hours: full-day trips

Doi Inthanon is about 2 hours one way to the summit area, so treat it as a full day. Thailand's highest peak rises above 2,500 m, and the road up is steep but well maintained. Mae Ya and Wachirathan waterfalls sit on the route, as do the King and Queen pagodas. Bring a light jacket, because altitude brings cooler air. Skip it if you have only one free day and want a relaxed pace. Chiang Dao is about 1 hour by van, with over 2 hours inside the caves. Check current cave access, guide requirements and fees first. Anyone uneasy in caves should pick another trip. East of the city, Giant Chiang Mai Treehouse sits about 40 km out in Mae On. Baan Mae Kampong is about 50 km east, and village plus treehouse takes 3-4 hours. Add Chae Son National Park, and you face a steep, rough access road where 4WD is recommended. Hire a driver or use a suitable car for this loop, and check the treehouse is still operating. Families should weigh Chae Son's rough road against a 3-4 hour loop.
Long day or overnight: Chiang Rai

Group tours to Chiang Rai run about 14 hours, leaving at 7am and returning near 9pm. Those tours cover roughly 1.5 hours of driving to a hot spring stop, then another 1.5 hours onward. Highlights are Wat Rong Khun and Wat Rong Suea Ten. Our verdict: do it in a day only if temples are your whole goal. Stay overnight for anything more, and read our comparison of Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai first. Pai is possible as a day trip, but a 3-4 hour drive each way is exhausting on winding roads. We'd stay overnight in Pai instead. Verify opening hours and fees for Chiang Rai sites on official pages.
Beyond the usual three: quieter picks for repeat visitors

Repeat visitors can skip the standard trio. Pha Chor Canyon in Mae Wang National Park has rock pillars about 30 m high. Allow up to an hour for the walk. Entry is about ฿100 per person and ฿30 per motorbike, so confirm current rates. Ban Hmong Mae Sa Mai shows Hmong village life, but its road is steep, narrow and poor, so 4WD is advised. Doi Luang National Park spreads across Chiang Rai, Phayao and Lampang, with Phu Kaeng, Champa Thong and Wang Kaew waterfalls. More quiet options sit in our lesser-known Chiang Mai spots guide.
Tour, driver, songthaew or motorbike?
Choose transport by the road, not just the price. Songthaews can reach Doi Suthep, about 50 minutes one way, so verify the route first. A tour or driver suits Inthanon's 2-hour run better. Steep mountain roads need a licence and insurance check before any motorbike rental. Confirm your licence is valid and your insurance covers riding. Chae Son and Ban Hmong Mae Sa Mai roads suit 4WD only.

| Option | Cost tier | Flexibility | Road risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Group tour | Low to mid | Fixed stops and times | Driver handles roads | First-timers and solo travelers |
| Private driver | High | Your own stops and pace | Driver handles roads | Families and the east loop |
| Songthaew | Low | Fixed routes, plan the return | Lower on Doi Suthep | Short half-day trips |
| Self-drive or motorbike | Low to mid | Total flexibility | Highest on steep roads | Experienced riders with valid cover |
When to go and what to pack
Early November to early February is the best window for day trips, with the lowest chance of rain. Rainy season usually ends around mid-to-late October. From early February, burning season brings smog that blurs mountain views. Wet roads slow steep climbs, and rain can close the Botanical Garden canopy walk. Our rainy-day fallback plans cover the city side. Pack water, sunscreen, a light layer for altitude and shoes with grip. Leave by 7am or earlier to beat midday heat and traffic.
Leave by 7am or earlier, since the Chiang Rai group tour already departs at 7am and returns near 9pm.
Where to base yourself and how to build a 3-4 day plan

Pickups usually collect from the old town or Nimman, which makes early starts easier. Staying in the old town puts you near those pickup points. Another base is the Nimman area. Hotel picks are in our neighborhood-by-neighborhood stay guide. For a 3-4 day plan, we'd use one mountain day, one temple half day, one rest day and one optional day.
Day 1 at Doi Inthanon starts with a 2-hour drive, which clashes with a single free day.
- Day 1: Doi Inthanon, leaving early for the 2-hour drive.
- Day 2: Wat Umong, Baan Kang Wat and Doi Suthep as a half day.
- Day 3: rest day, with a massage after the long drives.
- Day 4: Chiang Dao caves or the Baan Mae Kampong loop.
Common mistakes
Overpacking is the usual error. Combining Doi Inthanon with Chiang Rai is not realistic in one day. Elephant sanctuaries need independent checking, and we name none as ethical. Sunset visits to Doi Suthep need a confirmed ride back down.
- Booking sunset trips without a return plan.
- Assuming every place near Chiang Mai is easy by songthaew.
- Skipping rain checks for the canopy walk and mountain roads.
- Taking a low car up Chae Son's steep, rough road.
- Trying Pai in a day when 3-4 hours each way is the norm.
