Free beaches and swimming spots

Public bays on Koh Tao charge ฿0 for sand and swimming. Sairee Beach is the easiest, since you can walk its length and join the sunset crowd without paying anything. Tanote Bay is known for its boulders and clear water, but you need a ride to reach it. Bays such as Freedom Beach and Jansom Bay also appear in free-activity lists. Confirm access on the day, because some beachfront areas belong to resorts that sell loungers. For more options, read our Koh Tao beach guide. Swim only where the water is calm and avoid rough surf.

Good to know

Bays charge ฿0 for sand and swimming, yet the ride to Tanote Bay is the real cost.

Free viewpoints and short hikes

Viewpoint walks cost ฿0, but you pay in effort and heat. John-Suwan is the viewpoint most often named in free-activity lists. Wear closed shoes, because paths can be steep, rocky and slippery. Start early and carry water. Roads are shared with scooters, so walk facing traffic. Viewpoint-side cafes charge for drinks, and you do not have to buy one. If you want quieter places, our notes on quiet spots to explore suggest more walks.

Free sunsets and low-cost evenings

A sunset is ฿0 and needs only a clear west-facing view. Sairee Beach is the simplest choice if you stay on that side. See our Koh Tao sunset spots for alternatives. Eating is not free, so plan dinner separately. The Koh Tao Night Market: Is There One? Where to Eat at Night is the usual pointer for cheap food. Check current prices there, because stalls set their own. You can stay at ฿0 for the evening by skipping bars and taking a beach walk.

Free snorkeling from shore

Shore snorkeling needs no tour, so entry is ฿0. Gear is the cost: you either rent a mask or bring your own. Bays such as Tanote Bay and Jansom Bay come up most often for shore entry. Check conditions first, since swell and wind change visibility. Seasonal forecasts are posted by the Thai Meteorological Department. Never touch coral or stand on the reef. Snorkel with a buddy, because no lifeguard covers most bays.

What looks free but isn't

Koh Nang Yuan has a landing fee and needs a boat, so it is not a ฿0 stop. Verify the current fee before you plan it. Our Koh Tao island guide gives context. Private beach access, parking and loungers also add charges. Remote bays are rarely walkable, so a taxi or scooter becomes part of your real cost. A free viewpoint with a paid ride is not free.

How to get around for free or cheap

Walking works within Sairee and around the village areas, and costs ฿0. Distances to remote bays get impractical on foot, especially in heat. Songthaews and taxis fill the gap, so ask the price before you board. Our Koh Tao transport guide compares the options. Arriving by boat is a separate cost, and timetables sit on the Lomprayah site.

Sample free-day plans

These blocks assume ฿0 entry at every stop. Add transport and food on top.

  • One day: morning walk on Sairee Beach, midday swim, late-afternoon viewpoint walk, sunset on the sand.
  • Rainy day: check the rainy-day ideas, then visit a covered spot and walk when the shower passes.
  • Diver rest day: easy beach morning, shore snorkel at a calm bay, then an early night.
  • Timing: see the best season before planning outdoor days.
