Last updated November 2026: the best Koh Tao sunset plan starts at Sairee Beach on the west side, with a hilltop viewpoint at the north end as the harder alternative. One sun-time calculator listed sunset at about 6:00 PM on 26 October 2026. Plan to be settled by 5:30 PM and confirm your own date on a dated calculator.

Best places to watch the Koh Tao sunset

Sunsets face west, so Sairee Beach is the easy anchor. Beach bars line the sand, which means you can watch with a drink and walk home afterwards. For a higher view, a north-end spot called Sunset View Point is described in search snippets as sitting in the hills with west-facing views. Another local-guide listing describes the sun dropping behind Koh Nang Yuan from a secret viewpoint. We could not confirm exact access or the precise location for either, so check a map and a recent review before you go. The Mae Haad side is a further option, though verify the shoreline direction on a map first. Our guide to Koh Nang Yuan and nearby islands adds context for that alignment.

When does the sun set, and when should you arrive?

Sunset shifts through the year, so treat any fixed time as a rough guide. One calculator snippet showed roughly 6:00 PM on 26 October 2026, which makes a useful sanity check for late autumn. Arrive about 30 minutes early to claim a spot and watch the colour build. Cloud and monsoon cover decide whether the sun is visible at all. The Thai Meteorological Department publishes forecasts for the Gulf region. For seasonal patterns, see our notes on the Best Time to Visit Koh Tao: Month-by-Month Guide. If the sky clouds over, the sunset fades early, so do not wait for a last glow that never arrives.

How to get there and back in the dark

Sairee Beach needs almost no logistics if you stay nearby, because you can walk. The north-end viewpoint is different. You will probably need a scooter or a taxi, and both options carry trade-offs for the ride back after dark. Confirm road conditions locally before you commit, since we could not verify them. Read our guide to Getting Around Koh Tao: Scooters, Taxis & Transfers Compared for scooter and taxi details. Bring a phone torch and leave the viewpoint while some light remains. Descending a hill path in full darkness is the riskiest part of the evening.

Good to know

With a sample sunset near 6:00 PM on 26 October 2026, the hilltop climb down needs to start before the light fades.

What it costs

No entrance fee or price is confirmed for the viewpoints. Check the venue page or ask your accommodation before you go. Watching from the sand at Sairee costs nothing beyond drinks. For more no-cost ideas, browse our list of free things to do, or try quieter off-path spots for lower-key views.

What to do after sunset

Match your next stop to where you watched. From Sairee, pick a beachfront venue from our guide to Koh Tao Beach Clubs: Where to Go and What to Check for sunset drinks. Walk on to dinner using our picks for the 6 Best Restaurants in Koh Tao: Where to Eat by Area. If you prefer street food, the Koh Tao Night Market: Is There One? Where to Eat at Night is an easy next step. Later, head for the bars or the wider nightlife scene. After a hilltop viewing, plan a short ride back before choosing dinner. For overcast evenings, rainy-day ideas make a good fallback.

Tip

Stay at Sairee if you only have 30 minutes. You can walk on to dinner afterwards, which a hilltop viewpoint makes harder.

Mistakes to avoid and a quick picker

Most disappointing sunsets come from timing and planning, not the island itself. Use the picker below to match a spot to your evening, then browse Koh Tao Beaches: Best Beach for Every Traveler for other west-facing sand. For the full island overview, see our 9 Best Things to Do in Koh Tao for Divers and Non-Divers guide.

  • Arriving late: get settled around 30 minutes before the listed time.
  • Descending in the dark: leave the viewpoint while light remains.
  • Relying on a single view: keep Sairee Beach as your backup.
  • Ignoring weather: check the forecast before you ride up.
  • 30 minutes only: stay at Sairee Beach.
  • Whole evening with a drink: pick a Sairee beach bar.
  • Photography: try the north-end viewpoint, after confirming access.
  • Sun behind an island: look into the Koh Nang Yuan alignment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which beach is best to see sunset?

Sairee Beach is the practical pick on Koh Tao because sunsets face west and beach bars line the sand. You can walk to it from nearby stays and eat afterwards.

What's the best time to go to Koh Tao?

Clear skies matter most for sunsets, since cloud and monsoon cover can hide the sun. Check our seasonal guide and the Thai Meteorological Department forecast before planning your evening.
