Last updated November 2026: the phrase "Koh Tao islands" usually means two things, Koh Tao itself and the small islets beside it. Koh Tao (also spelled Ko Tao) is a single small island in the Gulf of Thailand, and Koh Nang Yuan is its best-known satellite. Use this guide to pick between Nang Yuan, Koh Tao's own bays, and a hop to Koh Phangan or Koh Samui.

Koh Tao Islands at a Glance

Start by separating the two meanings. Koh Tao is the island you sleep on, and Koh Nang Yuan is a three-islet cluster with a sandbar just offshore. Koh Phangan and Koh Samui are separate, larger neighbours in the same Gulf. Of that Samui–Phangan–Tao trio, Koh Tao is the smallest. Some travellers call it the little sister of the other two. Most visitors treat Nang Yuan as a day outing rather than a place to base themselves. Our editorial assessment is that Koh Tao suits snorkelling, diving and quiet bays more than nightlife. If you are still deciding whether to come at all, read whether Koh Tao is worth visiting. For the full activity list, start at things to do on Koh Tao. Fees, boat times and entry rules in this guide are not sourced here. Treat each as something to check locally.

Koh Nang Yuan: The Island Most Visitors Mean

Search results for this topic lead with Koh Nang Yuan, and it is the clearest answer to "which islands are near Koh Tao." Its three islets are linked by a sandbar, which is why it appears in so many snorkel and dive-trip listings. Pick it if you want clear-water swimming and a short escape from the main island. Skip it if you are a non-swimmer, if you want nightlife, or if you dislike sharing a small beach with day-trip boats. Crowd levels shift through the day, so check locally before choosing your hours. Weather and sea state can also cancel boats. Look at the best time to visit Koh Tao before fixing a date. The Thai Meteorological Department publishes official forecasts for the Gulf. Check them in the days before you go.

Koh Tao vs. Koh Phangan and Koh Samui

Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are bigger and busier than Koh Tao. Pick Koh Tao for diving, snorkelling and a slower pace. Pick a neighbour if you want nightlife, a wider choice of restaurants, or more road-based sightseeing. Ferry operators such as Lomprayah and Seatran Discovery publish their own timetables. Check them for current crossing times, because we have not verified any here. For the Phangan crossing, see Koh Phangan to Koh Tao: Ferry Times, Prices & Tips. Anyone on a tight ferry schedule should stay put and skip extra island-hopping.

How to Plan Your Time Across the Koh Tao Islands

With 1 day, split your time between one Nang Yuan outing and one Koh Tao bay. Book the boat first, then fit the bay around it. With 2 days, spend day one on Nang Yuan. Spend day two on Chalok Ban Kao or Tanote Bay, then end with a viewpoint stop from the Koh Tao sunset guide. Rain changes plans quickly, so keep rainy-day options on Koh Tao in mind. On a budget, free things to do on Koh Tao can fill the gaps.

Mistakes to Avoid

Most problems come from timing and assumptions.

  • Leaving no buffer before an onward ferry, since sea conditions can delay or cancel boats.
  • Assuming Nang Yuan is walkable from Koh Tao.
  • Ignoring reef-protection rules; check current marine-park guidance locally.
  • Relying on cash only, without checking ATM availability.
  • Booking a Nang Yuan day on a rough-sea forecast without a backup plan.
