What you get if you go
Krabi pays off in scenery and movement. Limestone cliffs frame Railay, and longtail boats link it to Ao Nang. Our guide to 10 Things to Do in Krabi: Islands, Temples, Local Picks covers the full menu. Here are the anchors.

- Railay: reachable only by boat, with West Railay Beach, Ao Tham Phra Nang and the East Railay viewpoint scramble.
- Boat days: the 4 Islands tour, Hong Island and the Phi Phi Islands all leave from the Ao Nang side.
- Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Seua): over 1,200 steps to a golden Buddha at roughly 300 m (about 1,000 ft). Our Krabi temples guide adds context.
- Dragon Crest (Khao Ngon Nak): a 7.2 km return hike (about 4.5 miles) taking 3–4 hours, with about 490 m (1,600 ft) of climbing.
- Inland: Mirror Lake kayaking, plus Emerald Pool and Hot Spring Waterfall.
Where Krabi disappoints

The tourist-trap complaint is partly fair. Ao Nang's main beach is busy with longtail boats heading for Railay. The 4 Islands tour is the most popular option and gets extremely crowded in peak season. Midday heat makes the Tiger Cave stairs punishing. Rough seas in the monsoon can make the Phi Phi and Hong crossings unpleasant. Sights are also spread out, so you need boats or a scooter. Skip Krabi if you want clubs, big malls or a historic city. Early starts, shoulder season and quieter bases soften most of these problems. For calmer stops, try quiet lakes and side roads or Krabi Town's riverside streets.
Tiger Cave's over 1,200 steps are why timing matters there, so aim for early morning or late afternoon.
Pick your base: Ao Nang, Railay, Krabi Town or Noppharat Thara

Your base shapes the trip more than any single sight. Railay is separated from the mainland and reached by boat. Longtail boats to Railay and Phi Phi leave from the Ao Nang beach. Krabi Town is more local and market-oriented. Noppharat Thara has a wider, calmer beach north of Ao Nang. Tub Kaek is further north and quieter still. Compare the sand in our Krabi beaches guide.
Choosing Railay as a base means the ฿100 one-way longtail ticket from Ao Nang to Railay is part of your budget.
| Base | Vibe | Boat access | Nightlife | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ao Nang | Main tourist hub | Longtails leave from the beach | Most options | First-timers, tour-takers |
| Railay | Cliffs, no road access | Boat only | Quiet at night | Climbers, couples |
| Krabi Town | Local, market-led | Needs a transfer | Night food stalls | Budget travelers, food lovers |
| Noppharat Thara | Wide, calm beach | Needs a short transfer | Night market, Muay Thai stadiums | Families |
| Tub Kaek | Quiet, higher-end | Needs a transfer | Minimal | Rest-focused stays |

How many days in Krabi is enough
Two days works for Railay plus one boat tour. That is a sampler, not the full place. Three to five days is our recommended range. Day one can be Railay, day two a boat tour that fills most of the day, and day three a scooter loop through the hinterland. Days four and five are flex days for Emerald Pool, climbing, diving or a second boat trip. Anything under two days mostly means travel time.
When to go and when to skip

Season is a trade-off between crowds and rain. December to March gives the most reliable beach weather and is also peak season. One traveler guide reports that late October worked as a shoulder-season compromise, with fewer crowds and manageable rain. Treat that as one experience, not a rule. Check Andaman patterns at the Thai Meteorological Department. Read our Best Time to Visit Krabi: Month-by-Month Weather page, then compare Krabi in July: Weather, What to Do & Who Should Skip with Krabi in December: Weather, Crowds & What to Book. Maya Bay is reported closed to landings from August 1 to September 30, so confirm before booking. Keep a fallback list from our rainy-day Krabi ideas.
Getting there and getting around

Flying is the simplest route. Check schedules on the Airports of Thailand site, and see our Krabi airport guide for arrival details. Our guide to getting to Krabi compares your options. From the capital, read Bangkok to Krabi: Flight, Train & Bus Compared. Once there, boats and scooters decide what fits in a day. Inland sights such as Tiger Cave Temple and Dragon Crest are reported at about 30 minutes by motorbike from Ao Nang or Krabi Town. Costs and booking realities
One 2026 traveler guide reports a ฿100 one-way longtail ticket from Ao Nang to Railay. It also lists ฿50 for Tiger Cave Temple, ฿200 for Dragon Crest and ฿400 for Emerald Pool. Hong Island adds a reported ฿300 national park fee, usually paid in cash to rangers. Mirror Lake kayaks are reported at ฿300. Confirm every figure locally, since fees change. Ask each tour operator what is included, because lunch and gear often are but park fees may not be. Mistakes to avoid
Most disappointments come from planning, not from Krabi itself.

- Stacking a sunrise hike with a full-day island tour. Dragon Crest takes 3–4 hours, and boat days run most of the day.
- Reaching Dragon Crest late. Entry reportedly stops at 2:00 PM.
- Booking a base without checking boat access, especially for Railay.
- Visiting rain-exposed sights without a plan B.
- Assuming tours include park fees. Ask before you pay.
- Visiting Tiger Cave at midday heat instead of early morning or late afternoon.
Is Krabi worth it after Phuket or Koh Samui?
Krabi can still feel worthwhile after Phuket or Koh Samui if you want a trip built around karst scenery, longtail transfers and active days. It is less compelling if you want another resort-heavy beach break with nightlife as the main event. Railay is reached only by boat, so even a simple beach day has a different rhythm from a road-accessible resort base.
Allow 3–5 days if you want to combine a boat day with inland sights rather than rushing between transfers. Dragon Crest is a 7.2 km return hike that takes about 3–4 hours, while Tiger Cave Temple has more than 1,200 steps. Those outings give Krabi an active dimension beyond beach time. Choose Ao Nang for easy boat departures, or Railay and Tub Kaek when a quieter stay matters more than evening options.
