Last updated November 2026: Krabi Old Town is the walkable riverfront core of Krabi Town, and it works best as a 2-3 hour stop or a single evening. It suits stopovers, transit days, budget travelers and anyone who wants local food over beach resorts. Beach seekers should treat it as a gateway and read our Krabi things-to-do hub for the wider province.

What Krabi Old Town Is (and Isn't)

"Krabi Old Town" is not an official district name in the sources we reviewed. Most guides simply say Krabi Town. In this guide, the label means the older centre along Maharaj Road and the riverfront near Chao Fa Pier. Wat Kaew Korawaram and the town's murals and cafes sit within that same walk. Across the river, the Khao Khanab Nam twin hills give the area its skyline. We do not claim any heritage district boundaries, because no source we checked defines them. Ao Nang and Railay are separate beach areas, not part of this walk. Old Town is a place for streets, food and boats, not for sand.

Is Krabi Old Town Worth It?

Worth it, in modest terms. You get a compact town centre, riverside views, murals, cafes and a working pier. You do not get resort beaches or big sights. Our editorial assessment: a short visit pays off if you are already passing through. For the broader question, see whether Krabi is worth visiting overall.

  • Skip it if you only want swimming and sunset beaches.
  • Skip it if you have a single day and have not yet seen Railay.
  • Skip it if you dislike midday heat and have no flexible evening.
  • Pick it if you land late, leave early, or want cheap local meals.

Most stops are on foot, so one loop covers them. Start at Maharaj Road, drop to the river near Chao Fa Pier, then add the temple, murals and cafes. The Khao Khanab Nam hills are across the river, so check the crossing options locally. Time estimates below are our planning guesses, not measured figures. Entry costs and opening hours are not confirmed in our sources, so check them on the day.

A Half Day or Evening Plan in Old Town

For a 2-3 hour visit, walk Maharaj Road first, then the riverfront, and finish with a cafe. For a half day, add Wat Kaew Korawaram and the murals, then cross toward Khao Khanab Nam if conditions allow. For an evening, arrive near sunset and head to the food stalls. See Krabi Walking Street: Days, Hours, Food & Tips for the evening market side. Rain changes the plan. Cafes, temple porches and market roofs give cover, and our wet-weather Krabi ideas list more indoor options. Check forecasts through the Thai Meteorological Department before you commit to the hills.

Tip

Time the Khao Khanab Nam crossing for cooler hours, since one November widget listed 24-34°C, which rules out midday.

Eating and Market Timing

Food is the best reason to stay past dark. Our guides to the Krabi Night Market Guide: Which One & What to Eat and other Krabi markets cover stalls and formats. Market days and opening hours are not confirmed in our sources, so check locally on the day. For sit-down meals, browse the 8 Best Restaurants in Krabi: Local Eats, Seafood & Markets. Come hungry and arrive before dusk, since stalls set up and fill at different times. Carry small cash for stalls. Confirm any prices at the counter, because we have no verified Old Town menu prices for 2026.

Getting There and Onward Boats and Day Trips

Start with Krabi Airport (KBV): Getting to Ao Nang, Railay & Islands logistics, and confirm flight and transfer details with Airports of Thailand. Other arrival routes are in our How to Get to Krabi: Flights, Buses, Ferries & Transfers guide, and local transport covers moving about town. Longtail boats to Railay leave from Chao Fa Pier in high season and take about 45 minutes, per one travel site. They run less often than from Ao Nang, so verify the schedule and the last boat. From Ao Nang, one traveler report put the Railay crossing at 10-15 minutes and around ฿100 one way. Another report cited ฿200 round trip from Ao Nam Mao in June low season. Treat both prices as anecdotal and dated. See our Krabi ferry guide for island links, and Best Beaches in Krabi: Where to Go and How to Get There for where to swim. Wat Tham Suea (Tiger Cave Temple) is the usual temple add-on; our Krabi temples guide covers it, but verify the climb, opening times and dress code first. Other day trips from town, per one competitor: Khlong Thom Hot Springs, about 70 km south and an hour by scooter, and Songpak River rafting, about two hours away. Check both before you plan around them.

Where to Stay: Old Town vs Ao Nang vs Railay

Old Town suits short stays and transit nights. Ao Nang suits beach access and easy boat links to Railay. Railay suits people who want the beach on the doorstep and accept boat-only access. Compare noise, food and budget in the table. Rates are not verified, so we use qualitative levels only.

Good to know

Ao Nang shortens the Railay trip, since one traveler report puts that crossing at 10-15 minutes, against about 45 minutes from Chao Fa Pier.

Mistakes to Avoid

Do not assume the last boat runs late. Confirm departure times at the pier on the day. Do not turn up at a market without checking its day and hours locally. Do not walk the hills at midday. One travel aggregator's November widget listed 24-34°C, so plan for heat. Check the best time to visit Krabi for seasonal timing. Do not book a beach hotel if you only need one night near the airport or bus. Do not expect heritage claims we cannot support, since the area is best enjoyed as a simple walk.
