Last updated November 2026: these Koh Samui hidden gems trade Chaweng's strip for hill gardens, small temples and quiet bays. Here, "hidden" means low crowds, a fee of ฿100 or less, and often a scooter or car to get there. Start with Secret Buddha Garden, Wat Plai Laem and Silver Beach.

8 Koh Samui Hidden Gems Worth the Detour

Skip the queue at Big Buddha and try these eight stops instead. Every pick carries the same fact line: area, effort, cost and who it suits. Fees come from visitor reports, so carry small cash and confirm at the gate.

  • 1. Secret Buddha Garden (Tarnim Magic Garden)
    • Fact line: interior hills, steep and sometimes rough road, reportedly ฿100 entry, free parking. Plan 10 to 30 minutes on site.
    • Dozens of stone monks, deities and animals sit along shaded paths beside a small stream.
    • Skip if you are an inexperienced rider or it has rained, because the road turns slippery.
  • 2. Wat Plai Laem
    • Fact line: near Big Buddha, easy, reportedly free entry and parking. Allow about 30 minutes and a 5-minute drive from Big Buddha.
    • An 18-armed Guanyin statue and a large laughing Buddha stand beside a lake.
    • Cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes before any shrine. More temple picks are in our Koh Samui temples guide.
  • 3. Silver Beach
    • Fact line: a small bay between Lamai and Chaweng, easy, reportedly free parking and no entry fee.
    • Boulders sit on one side, and snorkeling around the rocks at either end is modest.
    • A few small resorts and beach restaurants mean lunch is covered. Suits couples and budget travelers.
  • 4. Lamai Viewpoint
    • Fact line: Lamai Bay overlook, walk of under 10 minutes, steep in places, reportedly ฿100 entry.
    • A café sits near the top. A zipline is reportedly offered at ฿800, and walking back down is free.
    • Skip if the path is wet, since it gets slippery. Base planning on our Lamai area guide.
  • 5. Lipa Noi Beach
    • Fact line: quiet, shallow and family-friendly, with little nightlife or shopping. Cost is unconfirmed, so check locally.
    • Visitor reports rate it a peaceful sunset beach. Pair it with our Koh Samui sunset spots.
  • 6. Taling Ngam and the Samrong Bay side
    • Fact line: the quiet west coast, reached by car or scooter. Fees, parking and access are unconfirmed, so check locally before you go.
    • Pick it for space and calm rather than facilities. Skip if you want restaurants and beach bars at your feet.
  • 7. Wat Khunaram
    • Fact line: a working temple, so treat it as a place of worship rather than an attraction. Opening hours and fees are unconfirmed.
    • Dress modestly, keep your voice low, and ask before photographing anything inside. Confirm current visitor rules on arrival.
  • 8. Si Khao Night Market

How to Combine Them: Half-Day Routes

Group stops by area to avoid backtracking. Visitor reports pair Silver Beach with Lamai Viewpoint as a short scooter hop, so confirm distances on a map. Wat Plai Laem is a 5-minute drive from Big Buddha, which makes it an easy start before dinner at Si Khao at 6 PM. Secret Buddha Garden needs its own morning in dry weather. Lipa Noi and Taling Ngam suit a late-afternoon drive on the west coast.

  • East loop: Silver Beach, then Lamai Viewpoint, ending in Lamai.
  • Temple and food loop: Wat Plai Laem, then Si Khao Night Market after 6 PM.
  • West coast loop: Taling Ngam, then Lipa Noi for sunset.
  • Hill morning: Secret Buddha Garden alone, in dry weather only.

Getting Around, Costs and Safety

Scooters are the most common way to reach hill sites. Secret Buddha Garden's road is steep and rough in places, so hire a car or taxi if you are not confident. Skip the climb after rain. Songthaews run without fixed routes or prices, so agree the fare before you step in. Carry ฿100 notes for the garden and Lamai Viewpoint fees. Check scooter licence and insurance rules with Thailand's Department of Land Transport before renting. Protected areas can carry their own rules, so scan Department of National Parks notices before snorkeling or hiking.

Tip

Carry ฿100 notes, because the gems here are defined partly by fees of ฿100 or less.

When to Go

December to April is the dry season, and one visitor account suggests fuller beaches in those months. The same account found low tides during the day at many beaches in May, which hurts swimming. Plan Silver Beach and Lipa Noi for the dry months if you want to swim. Hill sites are the first to drop on wet days. Our rainy-day Koh Samui ideas cover the swaps. Check a current forecast from the Thai Meteorological Department before you commit.

Where to Base Yourself

Lamai suits the east loop, and our Lamai guide covers it. Chaweng is the busiest strip, which you are partly avoiding, but our Chaweng guide explains it. For a calmer base, read about Bophut. Still weighing the island overall? Try Is Koh Samui Worth Visiting? Honest Verdict by Traveler Type.

Good to know

Lamai works as a base for the east loop, where the viewpoint is a walk of under 10 minutes.

Mistakes to Avoid

Most problems come from timing and transport, not from the places themselves.

  • Riding up to Secret Buddha Garden after rain, when the road is slippery.
  • Arriving at a temple with bare shoulders or knees.
  • Reaching a ฿100 gate with no small cash.
  • Assuming a fee or opening time is current without checking locally.
  • Crossing the island for one stop instead of grouping by area.
