Last updated November 2026. Koh Samui islands means two things: the nearby islands you can reach from Samui, and Samui itself as an island. Samui is the hub of a Gulf of Thailand archipelago that one search snippet puts at more than 80 islands. The one decision that matters is whether you visit an island as a day trip or move your base there, and this guide helps you make that call.

Start with the split. Ang Thong National Marine Park, Koh Tan (also spelled Koh Taen) and Ko Mae Ko are the trips you take from a Samui base. Koh Phangan and Koh Tao are places you usually relocate to. If you are still deciding whether Samui itself suits you, read our short take on whether Samui is worth visiting. For a wider menu of outings, see Day Trips From Koh Samui: Best Options & How to Choose. Spelling varies across signs and booking sites (Koh/Ko, Tan/Taen), so this guide uses Koh Tan and Koh Tao consistently.

Best Islands Near Koh Samui

Ang Thong National Marine Park is the flagship. It is a protected island group reached by boat, and most visitors go on a guided day tour. Fees, rules and seasonal closures are set by the authority, so confirm them on the Department of National Parks website before booking. Koh Tan is the easier outing and is often paired with other stops on boat trips. Do not confuse it with Koh Tao, which is a separate island with a different journey. Ko Mae Ko and Ko Wua Ta Lap also appear in search results for this area. Treat them as stops on a tour and confirm what your operator actually visits. Pig Island turns up in snippets too, but verify access before you plan around it. If you want to paddle between stops, our guide to kayaking around Samui covers the options. Bigger lists of lesser-known spots sit in quieter places on Samui.

Day Trip or Overnight? How to Choose

Use a simple rule. If an island is a single highlight, such as a park, a snorkel stop or a beach, book a day trip and sleep on Samui. If you want several days of the island's own pace, move your bags. Koh Phangan suits slower, nature-focused travelers. Koh Tao suits a longer Gulf itinerary. One traveler post describes a Samui to Phangan to Tao sequence. Treat it only as a prompt to check current routes. Samui has its own airport, which makes it the easier base for short boat trips. Most travelers who only have a few days do better with one base and two or three day trips than with repeated packing.

  • Day trip: Ang Thong, Koh Tan, Ko Mae Ko.
  • Overnight or longer: Koh Phangan, Koh Tao (verify routes).
  • Rule of thumb: one highlight means a day trip, a different pace means a move.

How to Get There and Get Around

Day trips run by boat as group tours, private longtails or independent ferries, and each depends on sea conditions. Check current operator pages and seasonal schedules, because no timetable is verified here.

Costs, Park Fees and Timing

Group tours cost less per person than a private longtail, and a self-arranged boat sits between them once you add park fees. Exact baht amounts are not verified here, so get quotes from operators and confirm park fees with the national parks authority. A traveler-posted weather panel listed 26 to 32℃ for 5 November 2026. Rough seas can cancel boats, so keep a plan from things to do when it rains. For boat styles and what a private hire involves, see longtail boat trips.

Where to Base Yourself on Samui

Pickups usually run from the main beach areas, so choose a base that suits the rest of your stay. Compare the beach areas in our Samui beaches guide. Mistakes to Avoid

Most problems come from planning, not from the islands themselves.

Tip

A 26 to 32℃ reading says nothing about whether a boat will run when conditions turn rough.

  • Booking an overnight when a day trip is enough.
  • Ignoring monsoon-season sea conditions.
  • Assuming every islet has food, shade or toilets.
  • Mixing up Koh Tan (Taen) and Koh Tao.
  • Paying for a trip before checking the operator's current schedule and park rules.
