Pick Samui for a relaxed base with a Gulf-coast beach feel and easy day trips. Pick Phuket for more flights, more nightlife and more public transport. Samui covers roughly 250 km² and is about 20 km across. Phuket stretches about 50 km from north to south. If you are still unsure Samui is worth the trip, read our worth-visiting breakdown. For the Phuket-first angle on the same decision, see this Phuket-led comparison.

When Koh Samui Is the Better Pick

Choose Samui when you want one compact base and a calmer evening scene. Chaweng and Lamai offer beach bars without Patong's scale. Read our Samui beach guide to compare sand and swimming conditions by coast. Samui also works for a one-week stay. Spend two or three days on the beach, then add Big Buddha and Fisherman's Village by songthaew or motorbike. Our Big Buddha guide covers that stop. Evenings can mean the Samui night markets rather than clubs.

When Phuket Is the Better Pick

Phuket wins on scale. Patong's Bangla Road is the clear choice for late nights, and shopping and spa options are reported to be far broader than Samui's. Phuket's bigger airport also means more direct routes, especially for travelers connecting from far away. Spas exist on Samui too. Beach massages there start around ฿300 per hour, and our Samui massage guide shows what to expect. If your priority is nightlife, nationwide flight access or malls, concede the point to Phuket.

Best Time to Go: Gulf vs Andaman Seasons

Sponsored

Samui sits on the Gulf of Thailand coast. Phuket faces the Andaman Sea. That means their wet seasons do not line up. Both are reported to share a dry window from December or January to March or April. One competitor guide says Samui's June to August weather is often better than Phuket's. Verify month-by-month ranges with the Thai Meteorological Department or TAT before you book. If rain hits Samui, our rainy-day Samui ideas give you a fallback plan.

Getting There and Getting Around

Sponsored

Samui has a smaller international airport. Reported connections come from hubs such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Hong Kong and Bangkok. Phuket has a larger airport with more routes. Flights to Samui are generally pricier, so compare fares for your dates. On the ground, Samui songthaews are cited at about ฿100 per ride. Tuk-tuks run ฿150–฿300. Phuket buses are cited at ฿25–฿50, though taxis there can be costly. Samui is too spread out to skip transport, so budget for songthaews or a motorbike.

Cost and Time Trade-Offs

Samui is generally pricier for flights and lodging. Phuket is reported to run marginally cheaper overall. Neither claim replaces a live price check for your dates. Cut Samui costs by basing on the north or east coast. For time, a week suits both islands. On Samui, use one day for Ang Thong National Park, and see our Samui day trips. On Phuket, a day trip to Phang Nga Bay fits the same week. A three-night stay favors the island with the simpler transfer from your arrival airport.

Island-Hopping and Day Trips

Samui is the base for Gulf boat trips. Browse nearby Gulf islands to plan a hop. Ang Thong National Park is the headline day trip, with hiking and kayaking. Check access rules on the Department of National Parks site. Phuket covers the Andaman side instead, with trips to Phi Phi and Phang Nga Bay. Confirm boat times and prices with operators, since none are verified here.

Where to Base Yourself on Each Island

On Samui, Chaweng is the liveliest, so see our Chaweng guide. Lamai is mid-range and quieter, covered in our Lamai guide. Bophut suits families and has the Fisherman's Village feel, covered in our Bophut guide. The north and east coasts are quieter and cheaper. On Phuket, Patong is the party zone. Kata and Karon are calmer west-coast options, and Rawai and Nai Harn have a more local vibe. Verify Phuket areas before booking. Start Samui planning with our Koh Samui overview.

Tip

Beach massages on Samui start around ฿300 per hour, which pairs well with a quieter north or east coast base.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Sponsored

Do not pick by beach photos alone. Do not ignore the monsoon calendar, since the coasts differ. Do not book a Samui stay far from the area that fits your group. Do not underestimate transfer time and cost from the airport to your beach. Do not assume Samui is small enough to need no transport. Even at 20 km across, distances between Chaweng, Lamai and Bophut add up quickly.

Good to know

Songthaews cost about ฿100 per ride, so an island 20 km across still means daily transport spending.

  • Check the season for the coast you choose.
  • Match the base area to your group.
  • Price the airport transfer before booking.
  • Plan transport for every day.
