Last updated November 2026: shopping in Chiang Rai comes down to the Saturday Walking Street, the Night Bazaar and Central Chiangrai, with smaller local markets filling the gaps. Choose the walking street for crafts and snacks, the Night Bazaar for a quick souvenir run, and the mall when rain closes in. Market days and hours shift, so confirm them locally before you plan an evening around one.

Most visitors to Chiang Rai have one or two evenings, so the first decision is which venue fits your goal. Our guide to 9 Best Things to Do in Chiang Rai (2026 Guide) shows where shopping fits among the temples and day trips. Days and hours below are deliberately left open because we could not confirm them from an official source. Check them with your hotel or the local tourist office.

  • Souvenir hunters: the Night Bazaar and the Saturday Walking Street.
  • Craft and art buyers: the Saturday Walking Street first, then specialist shops in town.
  • Bargain and street-food grazers: the Sunday street market and Fah Thai Market, if they are running.
  • Practical needs and rainy days: Central Chiangrai.

Night markets and the Saturday Walking Street

Search results describe the Saturday Walking Street as the largest night market in Chiang Rai. Stalls are said to sell food, clothes, souvenirs, accessories and locally made crafts. Older posts describe the Night Bazaar as a smaller market of just a few blocks. Layouts change, so treat that comparison as a starting point and not a map. Our pages on the Chiang Rai Walking Street: Saturday Night Market Guide and the Chiang Rai Night Market: Bazaar vs Sunday Street cover each venue in more detail. For a wider look at vendors around town, see Chiang Rai Markets: Night Bazaar & Walking Streets Guide. Walk the whole street once before buying anything. Prices and quality vary stall to stall, and the same item often appears several times.

Local markets and the Sunday street market

Beyond the tourist-facing night markets, listings point to two more places. One is the Sunday Happy Street on Thanon Khon Muan. The other is Fah Thai Market. We could not verify the current schedule or layout of either, so confirm both before you detour. These are the venues to try if you want everyday goods and snacks over souvenirs. If you find secondhand stalls, browse them as a bonus and not a plan. We have no confirmed list of dedicated secondhand shops, so do not build an itinerary around one.

Malls and air-conditioned shopping

Central Chiangrai is the indoor option when heat or rain makes open-air markets miserable. It suits practical errands such as toiletries, chargers, pharmacy items and spare clothing. Prices are fixed, so you skip the negotiation. Opening hours and the store list are not confirmed in our sources, so check the mall's official site. Our Best Time to Visit Chiang Rai: Month-by-Month Guide guide explains when downpours are most likely. Keep the mall as your wet-weather fallback and save the markets for dry evenings.

What to buy when shopping in Chiang Rai

Northern Thailand is known for hill-tribe textiles and silver, and both turn up at the walking street. Look for hand-stitched or hand-woven work, and compare several stalls before choosing. Machine-printed imports often have identical repeating patterns and very even stitching. Ask who made the piece, and walk away if the answer is vague. Tea and coffee are the easiest gifts to pack. Doi Mae Salong is associated with tea, and Doi Chang with coffee. Buy sealed bags with a visible roast or harvest label where you can. Ceramics are worth considering too, but wrap them well. Fragile pieces are risky in checked luggage, so ask the seller to pack them tightly. Check your airline's baggage rules, and see Airports of Thailand for airport information. Our guide to the Chiang Rai Airport (CEI): Getting to and From the City covers departure logistics.

Chiang Rai or Chiang Mai: where to buy?

Sponsored

Chiang Mai is the larger city, so expect a bigger range of crafts and more stalls selling similar goods there. Chiang Rai offers a calmer browse with less pressure. If you are travelling between the two, our Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai: Bus, Car & Day Trip Guide guide covers the route. A sensible split is to buy small gifts, tea and coffee in Chiang Rai. Save bulky or high-value crafts for whichever city gives you the better choice on the day. Whatever you decide, compare before you commit. Buying the first item you see is the most common regret.

Bargaining, payment and getting around

We have no sourced fares or bargaining norms, so carry some cash and ask your hotel what is typical. For transport options, see Getting Around Chiang Rai: Transport Options Compared.

Sample evening plan: shop, eat, unwind

Start at the Saturday Walking Street while it is still light, and browse before you buy. Eat at the stalls, or head to a sit-down meal from our 5 Best Restaurants in Chiang Rai: Local Dishes to Order list. Local dishes are covered in Chiang Rai Food: What to Eat and Where. Finish with a foot or neck massage; see Chiang Rai Massage: Where to Go and How to Choose for options. If you want a drink afterwards, Chiang Rai Nightlife: Bars, Live Music & Late-Night Food lists the usual spots. Staying near the market keeps the walk back short, and Where to Stay in Chiang Rai: 6 Options by Area compares areas.

Mistakes to avoid

Sponsored

Do not plan around a market day you have not confirmed. Skip big purchases on your first lap. Avoid fragile ceramics unless you have packing space. Do not assume every textile is handmade. Short-stay travellers should pick one market, not three, and give it a full evening.

  • Arriving on the wrong day without checking locally.
  • Buying the first scarf or bag you see.
  • Carrying only large notes to small stalls.
  • Leaving no luggage space for tea, coffee or ceramics.
