Last updated November 2026: Chiang Rai markets come in three types. A daily Night Bazaar, a Saturday and a Sunday walking street, and a daytime municipal market cover most visits. Hours differ between sources, so confirm times locally before you build an evening around one.

Start with the day of the week. Saturday evening belongs to Thanalai Road. Sunday evening moves to a different street near the Chiang Rai Hospital junction. On other nights, the Night Bazaar is your main option, and the municipal market covers daytime. Hours below are ranges drawn from a 2019 guidebook entry and search snippets, so every cell says verify. For the rest of the city, see our wider list of Chiang Rai activities.

Chiang Rai Night Bazaar (Daily)

Night Bazaar listings place it on Phahonyothin Road beside Bus Terminal 1. Treat that location as a lead to confirm on a map, along with its current layout and whether every stall still trades. Travelfish describes fixed eating areas here, which makes it the better pick for a seated dinner. Stalls sell clothing, hill-tribe style crafts, carved soap and candles. One quirk matters for planning. On Saturday evening the bazaar can look quiet, because locals head to Thanalai Road instead. For a deeper look, read our Night Bazaar page. Hungry afterward? Our restaurant picks cover sit-down options.

Saturday Walking Street on Thanalai Road

Saturday's street market sets up along about 500 m of Thanalai Road. Travelfish says it opens from around 17:00 and offers a bit more variety than the daily bazaar. Sources disagree on which block it occupies relative to the clock tower, so use a map pin rather than a verbal direction. Seating is the trade-off. There are no fixed eating areas, so food comes as takeaway snacks and drinks you eat while walking. Expect the same goods as elsewhere: clothing, crafts, soap and candles. Walking Street specifics live on our walking street page. Local dishes are covered in our Chiang Rai food guide.

Tip

Thanalai Road's stalls run about 500 m, so pick the Night Bazaar on a night you want to sit down for dinner.

Sunday Walking Street Near Chiang Rai Hospital

Sunday's street sits south on Tri Rat Road, then right at the Chiang Rai Hospital junction, per Travelfish. Snippet sources suggest a 16:00 start, a better atmosphere from about 17:30, and a close around 23:00. Another listing gives different times and calls it Happy Street, so treat all of these as unconfirmed. Plan to arrive by early evening and leave flexibility. Check the day itself with your hotel or the local tourist office before you commit to a long walk.

Good to know

Even unconfirmed, the 16:00 start puts Sunday an hour ahead of Thanalai Road's Saturday opening from around 17:00.

Daytime Municipal Market

Travelfish lists a municipal market among Chiang Rai's markets, but this brief gives no verified hours or location. Check the current address and opening times with the municipality or the Tourism Authority of Thailand office before you go.

Which Chiang Rai Market Should You Choose?

Sponsored

Match the market to what you want from the evening. Each option below favors a different style of visit.

  • Eating while you walk: choose the Saturday or Sunday walking street.
  • Sit-down meal plus stage shows: choose the Night Bazaar.
  • Daytime produce and cheap local meals: try the municipal market once you confirm hours.
  • Souvenirs: compare a walking street with the Night Bazaar, since goods overlap heavily.
  • Smaller crowds: Chiang Rai is far less hectic than Chiang Mai's big markets, per Travelfish.

How to Plan Your Market Evening: Timing, Transport and Budget

Arriving at opening means stalls are still setting up. One snippet suggests arriving about 90 minutes after the start. Going late risks sold-out food and queues. Rain and low season can thin the stalls, so check our season-by-season visiting guide before booking. Walking is the simplest route from the clock tower area. At closing, a Grab, songthaew or tuk-tuk is the usual way back. Our local transport guide compares them. If you want to walk home, sleep close by, using our neighborhood stay guide. Day-trippers from Chiang Mai must match their visit to a Saturday or Sunday, and our Chiang Mai transfer guide covers the journey. Intercity buses are listed by Transport Co., Ltd. On cost, snacks cost far less than sit-down meals. Bargaining on souvenirs is normal. No baht figures are verified here, so ask the price before you commit. Pair a daytime stop with the evening, such as one of the city temples. You can also add free daytime sights.

Mistakes to Avoid at Chiang Rai Markets

Sponsored

Skip a market night if you have one evening on a non-market day, dislike crowds, or want a sit-down dinner at a walking street. Otherwise, avoid these common errors.

  • Arriving only at the very start, while stalls are still setting up.
  • Assuming every market runs nightly.
  • Expecting seating at the walking streets.
  • Carrying only large notes.
  • Confusing Chiang Rai with Chiang Mai's markets, which are bigger and more crowded.
