Thai Islands Guide: Which Island to Pick by Coast & Season
Compare Thai islands by coast, season, access time and budget, with Phuket-gateway routes and a pick-by-traveler-type shortlist.
On this page
Last updated November 2026: Thai islands split into two coasts, the Andaman Sea in the west and the Gulf of Thailand in the east and south-east. Phuket, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Lipe and the Similan Islands sit on the Andaman side, while Samui, Phangan, Tao and Koh Chang sit in the Gulf. Pick the coast by season first, then narrow the list by travel style and transfer time.
Which Thai islands should you pick?
Competitor guides put the national total at roughly 1,400 islands, and they disagree on the exact count. Most visitors see four or five. Our advice is to ignore the count and choose a coast, a time budget and a travel style. Phuket is the easiest Andaman gateway, so we anchor the routes below on it. For a ranked shortlist, see our ranked island shortlist. This page is the decision guide that comes before it.
Andaman vs Gulf: the two-coast season rule

Thailand's two coasts run on different weather calendars. Andaman Sea islands and Gulf islands do not share the same rainy and peak months. We are not quoting month ranges from memory. Confirm them on the Thai Meteorological Department and Tourism Authority of Thailand pages before you book anything. Booking the wrong coast for your month is the costliest error on this page. When one coast is in its wet spell, look at the other.
Andaman Sea islands from Phuket
Phuket is the largest Thai island and the main Andaman transport hub, according to one competitor guide. Koh Phi Phi is reached by ferry from Phuket, and one blog puts the crossing at 1.5 to 2 hours. Confirm that with the operator. Koh Lanta is usually reached through Krabi, the other major Andaman gateway. Phi Phi suits snorkeling and nightlife. Lanta is slower, with calm beaches such as Klong Dao and dive access to Koh Haa and Koh Rok. Our Andaman island breakdown goes deeper on each. Park-protected islands set their own fees, reef rules and closures. Read the current notices from the Department of National Parks before you go.

Far south: Koh Lipe, Trang and Satun
One competitor guide says the water is generally clearer and the crowds thinner off Satun and Trang than around Phuket. Treat that as unverified. Koh Lipe is the best-known name here and sits in the far-south Andaman group. Expect longer transfers than from Phuket. Check the current boat operator timetable for your dates, because we found no sourced schedule.
Gulf of Thailand islands: Samui, Phangan and Tao
Koh Samui has its own airport, which makes it the easiest Gulf island to reach. One Bangkok-based guide lists a flight of about 1 hour. Koh Phangan is a 20 to 30 minute speedboat hop from Samui in the same guide. Phangan mixes Haad Rin party nights with quiet yoga bays in the north and west. Koh Tao is the diving name in this group. For Gulf crossings, check Lomprayah's current timetable if it serves your route. Our Gulf island guide compares them in more detail.

Eastern islands: Koh Chang, Koh Mak and Koh Kut
Trat province holds an archipelago of roughly 52 islands, per Travelfish. Koh Chang covers 213 km² and is listed as Thailand's third largest island. Ko Kut covers 105 km² and ranks sixth. Ko Mak is far smaller at 16 km² and works as a farming-island base for families. Most of Chang's forested interior sits inside Mu Ko Chang Marine Park. Lonely Beach is the backpacker strip. From Bangkok, one guide gives 5 to 6 hours by road to the Trat pier plus a 30-minute ferry. Verify that before you commit.
Islands near Bangkok for short trips
Koh Samet is the usual weekend pick. One guide gives 3.5 to 4 hours door to door, via Ban Phe, then a 30-minute ferry or 15-minute speedboat. Hat Sai Kaew is the lively east-coast beach, while Ao Prao on the west side is quieter. Koh Larn is the other short-trip option mentioned in competitor lists. Neither suits divers or trekkers. Both suit anyone who wants sand within a few hours of the city.

Best island by traveler type
Our picks below are editorial judgement drawn from competitor descriptions, not rankings. Several islands fit more than one column. The table shows where we would start looking.
| Traveler type | Where we would start | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Families | Koh Lanta, Koh Samui | Calm beaches like Klong Dao; Samui has an airport |
| Couples | Koh Samui, Koh Lanta, Ko Kut | Resort range on Samui; quieter beaches on Lanta and Kut |
| Budget | Koh Phangan, Koh Chang | Hostels and bungalows at Haad Rin and Lonely Beach |
| Divers and snorkelers | Koh Lanta, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Tao | Hin Daeng, Koh Haa, reef coves, dive schools |
| Luxury | Koh Samui | Widest high-end resort range in competitor guides |
| Quiet | Ko Mak, Ko Kut, far south | Smaller, farming or low-key islands |
| Party | Koh Phangan, Koh Phi Phi | Haad Rin nights and Tonsai Village bars |
Getting there: time and access trade-offs

Transfer time shapes an island trip more than beach quality does. Samui is the only island here with a one-hour flight in the competitor figures. Everything else needs a ferry, a van, or both. Bangkok-origin times below are unverified competitor figures. Phuket-origin routes need current operator confirmation.
| Island | From Phuket | From Bangkok (unverified) |
|---|---|---|
| Koh Phi Phi | Ferry; confirm crossing time with operator | Fly to Krabi or Phuket, then ferry |
| Koh Lanta | Route via Krabi; confirm current transfers | Fly to Krabi, then van and ferry |
| Koh Samui | Check flight or overland options via Surat Thani | About 1 hour by direct flight |
| Koh Phangan | Reach via Samui or Surat Thani | Fly to Samui, then speedboat |
| Koh Chang | Long cross-country trip to Trat | Road to Trat pier, then ferry |
| Koh Samet | Not a practical add-on | Via Ban Phe, 3.5 to 4 hours |
Costs and what drives them
We found no official price list, so the tiers below are relative. One island blog estimates Bangkok to Koh Samet at ฿500 to ฿700 by bus and boat. The same blog puts Bangkok to Koh Chang at ฿400 to ฿1,200. Treat both as unverified estimates. Boat transfers, island-only resorts and peak-season surcharges drive most of the gap between tiers. National park fees add a separate line, so check the DNP page for current rates.
Compare Bangkok to Koh Samet at ฿500 to ฿700 with the 3.5 to 4 hours door to door, because transfer time, not the fare, decides whether a weekend works.

| Tier | Typical islands | What pushes cost up |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | Phangan, Chang | Hostels and bungalows keep nights cheap; boats add up |
| Mid-range | Lanta, Samet, Mak | Transfer chains and island taxis |
| Premium | Samui, Kut resorts | Resort-only islands and peak-season surcharges |
Common mistakes when choosing Thai islands
Most regrets come from planning, not from the island itself. Avoid these five.
- Picking the wrong coast for your travel month.
- Underestimating transfer time on islands without an airport.
- Booking a tight ferry connection right after a flight.
- Expecting nightlife and services on a quiet island like Ko Mak.
- Cramming too many islands into one short trip.
- Assuming a road runs around every island; check the layout before you rent a scooter.
How many islands to fit into a trip
Time budget decides this. With 3 to 4 days, stay on one island. With 7 to 10 days, stay on one coast and hop between two or three islands. With two weeks, take one full zone plus one add-on. Travelfish suggests one zone per trip, and we agree. Our island hopping routes lay out sample sequences. Start from Phuket if you are on the Andaman side.
Phangan sits a 20 to 30 minute speedboat hop from Samui, so pairing them can fit a 7 to 10 day trip without a long transfer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is Koh Samui so famous?
Competitor guides point to access and range. Samui has its own airport, so it is the easiest Gulf island to reach. Its accommodation runs from budget bungalows to high-end villas, which suits couples and families.
