Last updated November 2026: Thailand island hopping runs on two separate systems, the Gulf side (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao) and the Andaman side (Phuket, Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Krabi). Pick one coast for a 5-7 day trip and save both for 14+ days, when a domestic flight can link them. Ferry timetables change by season, so re-check every departure before you book.

Quick Answer: Which Thailand Island-Hopping Route Fits You

Start with trip length, then choose a coast. A 5-7 day trip fits one coast and 2-3 islands. A 10-day trip suits one coast in depth, or a Gulf chain from Koh Tao to Koh Phangan to Koh Samui. With 14+ days, you can cover both coasts and fly between them. Still choosing islands? Read our shortlist of Thailand's top islands first.

Each coast has its own hub airports, piers and boat operators. Boats do not cross between the two sides, so treat them as separate trips. On the Gulf side, Chumphon and Surat Thani are mainland gateways, and Koh Samui has its own airport. On the Andaman side, Phuket and Krabi are the usual gateways. Monsoon timing differs by coast, so check the Thai Meteorological Department or TAT before fixing dates. Our overview of Thai islands covers both sides in more detail.

Best Thailand Island Hopping Combinations

Two circuits keep transfers short. Both work as 7-10 day sketches.

  • Gulf chain: Chumphon or Surat Thani, then Koh Tao, Koh Phangan and Koh Samui, ending at Samui airport.
  • Andaman chain: Phuket, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, then Krabi (Ao Nang and Railay).
  • Koh Tao add-on: hire a long-tail from Sairee Beach to Koh Nang Yuan, a ride of about 15 minutes.
  • Samui add-on: a full-day tour into Angthong Marine Park, which covers 40+ islands.

Gulf Chain: Tao, Phangan and Samui

Begin on Koh Tao for diving and snorkeling. Move to Koh Phangan next, then finish on the larger Koh Samui. Read our guide to Gulf of Thailand islands for island-by-island detail. Surat Thani is the other mainland option if Chumphon does not suit your flights.

Andaman Chain: Phuket to Krabi

Start in Phuket, then take a boat to Koh Phi Phi. Continue to Koh Lanta and finish at Krabi, where Ao Nang and Railay are the beach bases. Phang Nga Bay and Koh Yao work as Phuket-based day trips. Our guide to Andaman Sea islands covers the options in depth.

How to Plan Your Time

Moving every 2-3 nights is a sensible rhythm. Each hop costs part of a day, because the chain runs hotel, pier, boat, pier, hotel. At time of research, one operator listed Koh Tao to Koh Phangan at 9:30 AM, arriving 10:45 AM. A Chumphon to Koh Tao catamaran took under 2 hours. Confirm all times with the operator, since schedules shift by season. Leave a buffer of at least a night before any international flight.

Tip

Over a 5-7 day trip, moving every 2-3 nights means two or three bases, and both coasts need 14+ days, so pick one.

Ferries, Speedboats & Getting Around

Four boat types cover most hops. Catamarans and ferries carry luggage more easily. Speedboats are faster but rougher, and operators may cancel them first when seas rise. Long-tails suit short hops, such as Sairee Beach to Koh Nang Yuan, and luggage is hard to carry on them. Check current timetables on the Lomprayah catamaran site for routes it lists.

Costs, Tickets & Park Fees

No sourced baht figures are supplied for this guide, so check live prices with the operator before you budget. Expect ferries to sit at the budget end, catamarans in the middle, and speedboats and private charters at the top. Park and entrance fees are usually separate from tour prices, so verify what a tour includes. For marine park fees and closures, check the Department of National Parks.

Good to know

Angthong tours starting with a 9:00 AM pickup often leave park fees out of the price, so ask what is included.

Where to Stay and Which Base to Pick

Sponsored

Base yourself in one place if hops make you anxious. Phuket works as a base for day trips to Phi Phi, Phang Nga Bay and Koh Yao. Move your base if you want quieter beaches or fewer transfer hours on the day itself. On Koh Phangan, Hat Rin has bars and full-moon parties, while the north is calmer. Divers do well on Koh Tao, with Sairee Beach as the departure point for Koh Nang Yuan.

Island-Hopping Day Tours vs DIY

Day tours give fixed stops and a guide, and they handle boats for you. DIY ferries give flexibility and overnight stays. A full-day Angthong Marine Park tour from Koh Samui, as one operator listed it, starts with a 9:00 AM pickup. The park spans 40+ limestone islands across roughly 97 square miles (251 sq km). Expect crowds at popular stops and book ahead in peak season. Elephant sanctuaries need extra care. Research welfare standards yourself rather than trusting an "ethical" label.

  • Choose a tour for one-day coverage of Phang Nga Bay or Angthong.
  • Choose DIY for multi-night stays and flexible dates.
  • Follow marine park rules and avoid touching reef.

Mistakes to Avoid

Sponsored

Most problems come from squeezing too much in. Avoid these:

  • Booking a same-day international flight after a final sea crossing.
  • Forgetting last-ferry cutoffs, which can strand you for a night.
  • Trying both coasts in under 14 days.
  • Skipping travel insurance that covers marine activities.
  • Leaving ferry bookings to the day in peak season.
